  • The purpose of this study is to develop a statistical program using data and artificial intelligence prediction models and apply it to one class in the sixth grade of elementary school to see if it is effective in improving students' statistical literacy. Based on the analysis of problems in today's elementary school statistical education, a total of 15 sessions of the program was developed to encourage elementary students to experience the entire process of statistical problem solving and to make correct predictions by incorporating data, the core in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into AI education. The biggest features of this program are the recognition of the importance of data, which are the key elements of artificial intelligence education, and the collection and analysis activities that take into account context using real-life data provided by public data platforms. In addition, since it consists of activities to predict the future based on data by using engineering tools such as entry and easy statistics, and creating an artificial intelligence prediction model, it is composed of a program focused on the ability to develop communication skills, information processing capabilities, and critical thinking skills. As a result of applying this program, not only did the program positively affect the statistical literacy of elementary school students, but we also observed students' interest, critical inquiry, and mathematical communication in the entire process of statistical problem solving.

  • The objective of this study is to explore the meaning generated through discourse in three different types of 1st-grade middle school textbooks in Korea and CMP textbook in the United States, specifically focusing on histograms. Through a discursive perspective, the study aims to analyze the characteristics of questioning within the stages of statistical problem-solving found in histogram tasks. The findings highlight several significant points. Firstly, variations exist in the definitions of histograms between Korean and US CMP textbooks. Secondly, diverse discursive structures contribute to the interpretation and understanding of histograms in textbooks. Thirdly, limitations are observed in the stages of statistical problem-solving reflected in histogram tasks. Lastly, distinctions are identified in the types of questioning employed in histogram tasks between Korean and US CMP textbooks. Building on these insights, the study suggests concrete ideas for enhancing the process of defining histograms and refining the questioning in histogram tasks.

  • This study aims to look into the characteristics of argumentation in the task context of 'Monty Hall problem' at a high school probability class. As a result of an analysis of classroom discourses on the argumentation between teachers and second-year students in one upper level class in high school using Toulmin's argument pattern, it was found that it would be important to create a task context and a safe classroom culture in which the students could ask questions and refute them in order to make it an argument-centered discourse community. In addition, through the argumentation of solving complex problems together, the students could be further engaged in the class, and the actual empirical context enriched the understanding of concepts. However, reasoning in argumentation was mostly not a statistical one, but a mathematical one centered around probability problem-solving. Through these results of the study, it was noted that the teachers should help the students actively participate in argumentation through the task context and question, and an understanding of a statistical reasoning of interpreting the context would be necessary in order to induce their thinking and reasoning about probability and statistics.

  • The structure of a mathematics task shapes the aspects of learning of those who solve the task. This study explores the process of understandings on the statistical variability of primary school students. Students were given two problems with different degrees of structuring - a well-structured problem (WSP) and an ill-structured problem (ISP) - and discussed in a group to solve each task. The highest level of development achieved in both cases appeared to be similar. However, when given the ISP, students dynamically proposed ideas and justified the conclusion based on their hypothesis. Furthermore, all students actively participated in solving the ISP until the end whereas some students were marginalized while solving the WSP. This discrepancy results from the difference in the degrees of task structuring.

  • The Ministry of Education (2015) announced the "2015 Revised Curriculum for Elementary and Secondary Schools" and announced that SW (Software) training for elementary and junior high school students to develop Computational Thinking will be gradually introduced from 2018. In addition, 'problem solving' and 'programming' have become important areas. Furthermore, the ability to analyze and utilize big data is becoming more emphasized. We developed and applied the statistical - Python programming convergence curriculum based on the idea that convergence education combining information and mathematics, programming and statistical literacy is needed according to current trends. Before and after the experiment, problem solving ability test and programming / mathematical interest test were conducted and compared with the corresponding sample t-test. According to the analysis results, there were significant differences in the pre- and post-test on problem solving ability, programming interest and mathematical interest at the significance level of 0.05.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary science gifted students' characteristics of the thinking in the problem solving process through a MEA(Model Eliciting Activity)activity. The subjects of this study are 40 elementary science gifted students who passed the first screen for the admission to the science gifted education institute in P university in 2018. The MEA activity was 'Coffee cup challenge', which is to find the best way to place cup side and bottom to save paper in a given material. Three drawings from each student and explanations of each drawing through out the design process were collected as the main data source. The data were analyzed by statistically (correlation coefficient) and qualitatively to find the relationship between; 1) the intuitive thinking and visual representation and 2) analytical thinking ability and communication skills that reflect MEA activities. In conclusion, first, intuitive thinking plays an important role in the ability of visual representation through pictures and the whole problem solving process. Second, the analytical thinking and elaboration process which are reflected through reflection on the arrangement of the drawings have a great influence on the communication skills. Therefore, this study investigated that MEA activities are useful activities to stimulate both intuitive and analytical thinking in elementary science gifted students, and to develop communication ability, by organizing their own ideas and providing learning opportunities for various solutions.

  • Software integration becomes very important in these days. Since the 4th industrial revolution has begun and influences its heavy effects on our daily life, software education has been introduced in the 2015 national revised curriculum. The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of a mobile web application for the elementary algorithm class based on STEAM on the problem solving process of elementary school students. To do so, in this study we constructed an algorithm learning contents based on STEAM for new software education and developed a mobile web application for flipped learning to improve their problem solving ability. Further, an experimental group and a controlled group are selected respectively from the 5th grade elementary school students. Then, a new flipped learning class using our mobile materials was applied to the experimental group while a traditional lecture class using the activity papers was applied to the controlled group. Finally the paired samples t-tests were carried out. As a result, we found that there was a statistically significant difference in problem solving process between the two groups. Based on our experimental research and the results of statistical analysis, the mobile web application class based on STEAM turned out to be effective in improving the problem solving ability of elementary school students.
