Polypropylenes(PP) with different melt index values were mixed with ethylene-propylene rubber(EPR) or ethylene-propylene diene monomer rubber(EPDM) and an ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid group in a twin screw extruder. Then test specimens were prepared from the pellets of the blends with an injection molding machine. The mechanical properties and morphology of fractured surfaces were measured. Relative peak intensities of carboxylic acid group on the specimen surface were measured with an attennuated total reflection infrared spectrometer (ATR-IR) and compared with each other. The blend specimens were found to have the gradient morphology of rubber domains in PP matrix in the core region and PP skin layer. The blends containing PP of higher melt index showed greater content of ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid on the surface when the relative peak intensities of ATR-IR for carboxylic acid were compared. As the melt index values were increased, the decrease tendency in mechanical propeties such as tensile strength and impact strength was more significant for PP/EPR blends than PP/EPDM blends.
Ion diffusion and chemical binding to acrylic polymer were investigated in a solid film. The composition of acrylic monomers containing amino group and carboxylic acid was adjusted for rapid ion migration in the film. p-Methylred (PMR) and phenolphthalein derivatives were optically sensitive to the concentration of proton and hydroxyl anion, respectively and verified the ion migration through the film layers. A rapid proton migration was observed in the film of a high amino content. On the other hand, $OH^-$ migration occurred rapidly in a high content of carboxylic acid group. The proton migration occurred through the internal layer as well as surface layer of a film and was reversible during 50 repetition examination. Copper(II) ion migration was examined with a Rhodamine-containing polymer film. The light absorption and emission spectra of a Rhodamine-Cu complex showed the key contribution of carboxylic acid group to the Cu(II) migration in a film.
Reaction mechanism of palladium(0, II)-phosphines complexes catalyzed cyclocarbonylation for unsaturated carboxylic acid such as crotonic acid, methacrylic acid and 3-butenoic acid has been investigated by product analysis, molecular mechanics and extended Huckel molecular orbital method. Reaction of 3-butenoic acid with palladium(0, II)-phosphines catalyst gives palladium containing cycloester through intermediate palladium-olefin ${\pi}$ -complex in the catalytic carbonylation. Palladium(0, II)-phosphines complexes catalyze the cyclocarbonylation of 3-butenoic acid to give 3-methylsuccinic anhydride and glutaric anhydride. But ${\pi}$ -complexes with palladium(0, II)-phosphines and unsaturated carboxylic acids such as crotonic acid and methacrylic acid are not effective the catalytic cyclocarbonylation.
The low viscous epoxy resin(bisphenol F) with carboxylic acid as the reductants was introduced for high performance and reliability in the ACA with a low melting point alloy filler system. The curing characteristics of the epoxy resin and temperature dependant viscosity characteristic of epoxy resin at the melting temperature of LMPA were investigated by dynamic mode of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheometer, respectively. Based on these thermo-rheological characteristics of epoxy resin and LMPA, the optimum process system was designed. In order to remove the oxide layer on the surface of LMPA particle, three different types of carboxyl acid-based reductant were added to the epoxy resin. The wetting angles were about $18^{\circ}$ for carboxypropyldisilioxane, and $20.3^{\circ}$ for the carboxy-2-methylethylsiloxane, respectively.
New Palladium(0)-olefin complexes, $(PMe_3)_2Pd{CH_2=C(CH_3)COOH} \;and\;(PMe_3)_2Pd{(CH_3)CH=CHCOOH}$ have been prepared by treating $Pd(PMe_3)_2$(styrene) with methacrylic acid and trans-crotonic acid, respectively. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and $^1H-,\;^{13}C-,\;and\;^{31}P$-NMR spectroscopy. The carboxylic acid entity was found non-bonded with palladium while ${\pi}$-bond is formed between the olefin double bond and Pd(0). The results are compared with the metallacycle formation the reaction of Pd(PMe3)2(styrene) with 3-butenoic acid.

Korean pine(Pinus densiflora) bark was evaluated for its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled barks were treated with 1 N NaOH or 1 N HCl to examine the effect of surface modification. For comparison, untreated bark was tested under same condition. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, NaOH treatment increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity by $139\sim184%$, while HCl treatment decreased it by $37\sim42%$. Maximum copper ion uptake by bark was observed at pH $5\sim6$, but pH of solution was not a potent influence. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto bark. For NaOH-treated bark, the calculated sorption capacity$(q_e)$ increased from 6.58 to 12.77 mg/g, while the equilibrium rate constant$(k_2)$ decreased from 0.284 to 0.014 g/mg/min as initial Cu(II) concentration doubled from 100 mg/L. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated bark showed that equilibrium sorption data were represented by both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model. It was confirmed that carboxylic acid of bark was involved in the Cu(II) adsorption. For NaOH-treated bark, in particular, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification appeared to be a major functional roup responsible for the enhanced Cu(II) sorption.
Although various theories have been presented on the mechanism of setting retardation of plaster in addition to organic admixtures. The purpose of this paper is that Hydration studies of plaster of paris in the presence of carboxylic acids under alkalinity are examined in the coordination chemistry. Setting of plaster of paris is retarded by the addition of carboxylic acids except oxalic acid. And setting of plaster of paris contained 5 wt% of Ca(OH)2 is also retarded by the addition of above-mentioned carboxylic acids. The degree of retarding effect under alkalinity is found to be a function of the number of the functional group and the length of carbon chain of carboxyl acids. These reasons are attributed to the soluble complex formation, that is calcium complex formation between calcium ion and carboxylic acids. The author's proposal was confirmed by the results of electrical conductivity measurement. The formation of calcium complex was surpported by IR spectra.
1,3-Propandiol is a promising chemical which can be produced from fermentation of glycerol because the application of 1,3-propanediol is mainly in the production of bio-polytrimethylene terephthalate (bio-PTT). However, the cost of downstream processes in the biological production of 1,3-propanediol can make a high portion in the total production cost due to the large amount of water and the by-produced carboxylic acids such as succinic, lactic and acetic acids in 1,3-propanediol fermentation broth. In this study, aqueous two-phases systems composed of hydrophilic alcohols and phosphate salts were applied to the recovery of 1,3-propanediol from its artificial aqueous solution. Formation of aqueous biphases in hydrophilic alcohols and phosphate salts was due to the salting-out effect of salts in bottom phase, thereby 1,3-propanediol in bottom phase was moved into top phase. Extraction efficiency for 1,3-propanediol was proportional to the polarity of hydrophilic alcohols and the basicity of salts and the maximum value of extraction efficiency was more than 98%. In the aqueous two-phases systems after extraction, there was no carboxylic acid in top phase. Therefore, it was concluded that the aqueous two-phases systems composed of hydrophilic alcohols and phosphate salts were effective for the selective recovery of 1,3-propanediol without any coextraction of carboxylic acids.
The effects of ligands on reactivity under GoAgg oxidation system have been studied. Picolinic acid containing carboxylic acid showed the most excellent activity among various ligands. Also, Picolinic acid of ortho position carboxylic group in pyridine ring largely increased reaction rates in the GoAgg oxidation systems. From these results, we proposed the new mechanism on the GoAgg oxidation using ligands having carboxylic group at ortho position.

During the search for a novel compound that can inhibit NF-${\kappa}B$ activation, 6-hydroxy-7-methoxychroman-2-carboxylic acid phenyl amide (KL-1156) was identified as a good inhibitor of NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. In the present study, we describe the synthesis of methylchroman-2-carboxylic acid N-(disubstituted)phenylamide derivatives (1 and 2 serieses). In addition, their inhibitory effects of NF-${\kappa}B$ are compared with activity of KL-1156 and SAR (structure activity relationship) are explored.
