  • Rainfall infiltration test under one dimensional condition is conducted to evaluate the effect of rainfall intensity on seepage velocity and infiltration characteristics for initial unsaturated sediment. Experimental results are compared with those numerical simulations with respect to variations of pore water pressure, degree of saturation and discharge velocity with time, and both results give good agreement. High rainfall intensity tends to increase seepage velocity almost linearly. But it shows rapid increase as rainfall intensity approaches saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sediment. In addition, the upper part of wetting front depth is partially saturated, not fully. Therefore, actual wetting front depth is considered to advance faster than theoretical prediction, which leads to slope instability of unsaturated slope due to surface rainfall.

  • Recently, due to increase of the impervious layer, the storage of surface layer has been reduced. Otherwise the peak runoff and the total surface runoff have been raised. Because of larger amount of the peak runoff and the rapid time of concentration, the flood damage of the urban watershed was increased. The groundwater level is descended by reducing the amount of rainfall that infiltrated into the soil. Thereby the hydrologic cycle is degenerated by the dry stream. Therefore, in this study, the evaluation and the quantitative analysis of the percolation effect were performed through the infiltration experiment of permeable pavement, which is one of the ways that can reduce the problem of the dry stream. Also the SWMM model is used to analyze the effect of the hydrologic cycle for permeable pavement in Changwon stream and Nam stream watersheds, with the coefficient of permeability from the infiltration experiments.

  • The model test and field test for an infiltration trench were carried out to estimate the infiltration quantity in a granular ground with high permeability like Jeju's ground. The specific infiltration equation was suggested on the basis of the model test result. It shows that the infiltration quantity by the proposed equation is larger than about two times of that by the existed equation. Meanwhile, the infiltration quantity from field test is similar to that from the proposed equation as the result of comparison between infiltration quantity of the filed test and that of the proposed equation and the existed equation. Therefore, it may be right that the proposed equation is applied to estimate the infiltration quantity of the infiltration trench in a granular ground with high permeability.

  • In this paper, the rheological characteristics of slurry used fur slurry-shield tunnels were studied with emphasis on penetration characteristics. The slurry penetration was modeled by soil-filter clogging theory. The coefficient of particle deposition was suggested as an indicator of sin clogging during tunnel construction and calculated through model tests. The measured slurry weight, clogged in the base soil, was compared with the value obtained from clogging theory. Based on the testing results, a stability analysis of a tunnel face was performed to pinpoint the most influential factor affecting stability of slurry-shield tunnels. It was found that the stability of tunnel face is dependent on the ratio of infiltration velocity to the coefficient of particle deposition, and the penetration distance of slurry increases with the ratio of infiltration velocity to the coefficient of particle deposition. Since the stability of tunnel face decreases with the slurry penetration distance, it was necessary to add some additives in order to reduce the slurry penetration distance. It was found that the ground condition needs additives when the soil has the effective particle diameter$(D_{10})$ larger than 0.75mm. It was also found that the tunnel face stability due to slurry penetration is significantly affected by the tunnel advance rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to present criteria of selection of optimum grout materials through analyzing the limitation of permeability of each materials(MSG-N, OPC), in various ground conditions by comparing presentation of strength and permeability of MSG method and LW method(or SGR method). To do that, physical and chemical characteristics of grout materials were analyzed and compressive tests of homogel, mixed coagulation materials and hardening materials in certain mixing ratio, and of milk paste. In addition, permeability tests for each ground soil, each injection pressure, and each materials in combined stratum were performed with massive chamber. The results of tests showed that ultra fine grout materials like grout of MSG is necessary to construct effective grouting in sand and silty sand ground. Also, it is expected to become chemical grouting guide data to layout construction engineers because presented proper injection pressure by kind of object ground in case using ultra-fine grout material.

  • Seepage analysis through unsaturated zone based on the theory of unsaturated flow is commonly performed to evaluate dam safety. However, the concepts of unsaturated soil behavior have not been transferred into the hands of practicing geotechnical engineers since the problems involving unsaturated soils often have the appearances of being extremely complex. There is variability and uncertainty associated with the unsaturated hydraulic properties that in turn will lead to variability in predicting unsaturated soil behavior such as seepage rate and the pore water pressure distribution. In this paper, measurements of the soil-water characteristic curve and saturated hydraulic conductivity for the core material of dam were conducted. Then, finite element stochastic analysis was used to capture the effect of unsaturated hydraulic properties on the seepage behavior of dam. It is observed that the amount of seepage increases, as the values of unsaturated soil parameters a and n increase. The values of m and p showed opposite trend.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the restoration combined with resin infiltration (RI) of early cavitated smooth surface caries lesion in terms of microleakage. Flowable resin and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) were compared. Sound 20 extracted 3rd molars were divided into 2 groups randomly. Artificial decalcified lesion was induced. Cavities were prepared on the mesial and distal surfaces, and randomly set as experimental and control group. RI was applied to the experimental group before cavity restoration. The control group was restored without RI. In group I and II, flowable resin and RMGIC was used for restoration respectively. After thermocycling and silver nitrate immersion, microleakage was assessed by μ-CT. Depth of microleakage was lower in experimental group than control group only in group II (p = 0.05). Microleakage depth was lower in group II than group I in both experimental and control groups (p = 0.05). RI pretreatment before restoration of early cavitated caries lesions might reduce the microleakage and help long-term maintenance of restoration. In this study, RMGIC was less polymerization shrinkage. Restoration with RMGIC after RI pretreatment reduced the microleakage of the restoration compared to the flowable resin.

  • The vulnerability of concrete to its environment is significantly dependent on the fact that concrete is a porous material. For well-consolidated and well-cured concrete, its service life is a very long and an entrance of aggressive substance might be only pores. However, for cracked concrete, cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions. The effect of crack on chloride penetration depends on its size for example, crack width and crack depth. The purpose of this study is examining the effect of crack width and crack depth on chloride penetration. In order to visualize chloride penetration via cracks, RCM (rapid chloride migration) testing is accomplished. Crack width is examined using an optical microscope and CMOD value is used to estimate average crack width. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficients of concrete specimens with various crack widths, a critical crack width and a critical crack depth are found out.

  • Concrete is a type of porous materials and is physically and chemically damaged due to exposure to various environments from the placing to the service life. These reactions affect the corrosionof steel bars applied in concrete and that decreases the durability life and strength of such steel bars. Thus, it is very important to insert rust inhibitors into steel bars in the case of a deterioration element that exceeds the critical amount of corrosion in the location of steel bars. However, it is very difficult to guarantee corrosion resistance at the location of steel bars using conventional technology that applies corrosion inhibitors only on the surface of concrete. This study attempts to develop a method that penetrates corrosion inhibitors up to the location of steel bars and investigate the penetration depth of corrosion inhibitors by verifying moisture migration in concrete under an applied pressure.

  • The stability of the embankment is depended upon the location of seepage line. As the seepage flow occurs in the embankment, the slope of the embankment loses its stability. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of embankment level. The variation of seepage line in the embankment model according to flow velocity was investigated. In addition to this non-steady state flow in embankment by a fluctuation of water level is discussed. The experimental model was construction with slopes of 1 : 2.5 and flow velocity is turned from 60 cm/sec~90 cm/sec. Analysis of the experimental results, the seepage line is influenced by flow velocity and coefficient of permeability.
