Methods: The subjects were 35 and 29 fourth-year dental hygiene students at G University in the first semester of 2021 and 2022, respectively, and 53 and 43 third-year dental hygiene students at D University, respectively, for a total of 160 students. After implementing the dental hygiene ethics course, classroom performance was evaluated in terms of moral sensitivity, confidence in making ethical decisions, classroom practicality, learning outcomes, and class satisfaction. Statistical analysis was conducted using independent t-test and paired t-test, and the statistical significance level was 0.05. Results: Both universities reported an increase in moral sensitivity and confidence in ethical decision-making after the course (p<0.001). Classroom practicality and class satisfaction for the dental hygiene ethics course did not differ between disciplines and were rated positively with a score of 4 or higher (p>0.05). Learning outcomes were higher among 4-year students than 3-year students (p<0.001). Conclusions: It was evaluated that the ethics in dental hygiene curriculum can strengthen students' competence in ethical decision-making, including moral sensitivity and confidence in solving ethical problems in dental hygiene.

  • Fluoride use is the best and widespread method for dental caries prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate experience and recognition of fluoride for caries prevention focusing on majors in one university. Four hundred twenty-four university students were selected by convenience sampling with informed consent and answered the questionnaire by self recording type. The subjects except dental hygiene students knew about purpose of fluoride use (84.6%), over the count fluoride rinse (63.2%), fluoride toothpaste (61.5%), professional fluoride application (56.4%) and water fluoridation (43.6%). They experienced over the count fluoride rinse (67.5%), school fluoride rinse (45.3%), professional fluoride application (30.8%), fluoride toothpaste (28.2%) and water fluoridation (12.0%). The main information paths about fluoride were university lectures among dental hygiene students and internet and mass media, followed by nurse-teachers among non dental hygiene students. The ratios of intention to use fluoride were: 67.8% in dental hygiene, 34.9% in health, 51.4% in non-health in case of professional fluoride application for oneself, 93.1% in dental hygiene, 48.0% in health, 50.4% in non-health in case of professional fluoride application for their children, 79.0% in dental hygiene, 51.3% in health, 55.8% in non-health in case of water fluoridation. The subjects to experience and recognize fluoride for caries prevention had more positive intention to use fluoride. The answers of students majoring in health or medical care were not different from non-health, except dental hygiene. Dental professionals should try to let the public know about fluoride use for caries prevention through mass media and internet as well as individual education in dental clinics.

All contents of the recorded FGI were used to draw the main results while maintaining the core contents Results: The themes derived through the FGI were confirmed by 'advantages of PBL', 'competencies developed through PBL', 'teamwork experienced in PBL', 'required competencies for PBL team activities', 'differences in contribution among team members', 'satisfaction with PBL', 'improvements to PBL', and 'trial and error experienced in PBL'. Conclusions: The PBL was a useful for improving the integrated thinking and problem-solving skills of dental hygiene students. Moreover, this study provides useful basic data for the qualitative improvement of the PBL.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the comprehensive relationship among sense of coherence, clinical practice stress, and major satisfaction of students in the department of dental hygiene. From four local universities, departments of dental hygiene were selected: two departments represented a three-year curriculum system and two represented a four-year curriculum system. Data from the final questionnaires of 319 students were analyzed. Differences between variables were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVAs, and correlations were checked using Pearson's correlation coefficients. Path analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among clinical practice stress, sense of coherence, and major satisfaction. The results indicated that clinical practice stress had a negative influential relationship with both sense of coherence, and major satisfaction. In addition, sense of coherence had a positive influential relationship with major satisfaction. The direct and indirect effects among factors displayed significant differences, indicating that clinical practice stress has a partial mediation effect on sense of coherence and major satisfaction. Therefore, major satisfaction can be increased by developing and implementing programs to improve sense of coherence.
