The aim of this study was to obtain the traceability of the software used to analyze lateral cephalometry and to calculate the uncertainty of the measurements. Furthermore, this study aimed to provide a basis for obtaining standard references for measurement values for orthodontic treatment in children. Cephalometric data were collected from 100 children diagnosed with class I malocclusion between the ages 6 to 13 years who visited the pediatric dentist at Seoul National University Dental Hospital. To ensure traceability, a phantom device was created. Correction values were calculated by measuring the length and angle of the phantom device using the software. Type A uncertainty was calculated by obtaining the standard deviation of cephalometric measurements of 100 persons and the standard error of repeated measurements. Determination of the type B uncertainty was induced by minimum resolution and the position of the head. Using these, the combined standard uncertainty was obtained and the expanded uncertainty was calculated. The results of this study confirm that the currently used software has high accuracy and reliability. Furthermore, the uncertainty of orthodontic measurements in Korean children aged 6 to 13 years was calculated, and distribution range for class I malocclusion with 95% confidence interval was suggested.

Impacted mandibular canines are less common than impacted maxillary canines. The proceeding studies show that impacted mandibular canines occur in approximately 0.1% of patients examined. The causes of impacted mandibular canines are inadequate space, premature loss of the primary dentition, excessive crown length, hereditary factors, functional disturbances of endocrine glands, tumors, and traumas. The basic choices for treatment of those cases are orthodontic migration or surgical removal. This is a case report about those two different treatment methods. One patient was 11 years old female who had treated with surgical approach and the other was 14 years old male who had received orthodontic treatment.
Purpose: This article examined the affecting factors of a malocclusion status of a patient for orthodontic treatment, orthodontics medical expenses and oral health behavior on orthodontic satisfaction. Methods: This paper conducted a survey from the 15th of July to 30th of September 2012 for the patients who were under orthodontic treatment at three dental clinics where are in Deagu, and distributed a total of 210 questionnaires and analyzed 194 questionnaires, excepting for some questionnaires that were answered unfaithfully. Results: This study classified the related factors into a feeling of satisfaction with treatment and mental satisfaction for finding orthodontic satisfaction. There were the effect of the right tooth-brushing method, a periodic scaling and orthodontics medical expenses on a feeling of satisfaction with treatment, and power of explanation was 16.7%. Conclusion: There were the effect of a malocclusion status, matters that requires attention during orthodontic treatment, a periodic scaling during orthodontic treatment and orthodontics medical expenses on mental satisfaction, and power of explanation was 16.9%. Based on the result above, this paper concluded that preventive treatment and early treatment should be emphasized through developing a program for regular oral examination suited to each medical type, including the method for improving the medical treatment condition and care service for increasing orthodontic satisfaction, which the dental medical-service providers could consider the patients and secure trust.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes and types of statistical methods used in the Korean Journal of Orthodontics (KJO) and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO) from )999 to 2003. The frequency of use, transitions, assumption check of statistical methods and types of advanced statistical methods were examined from each journal. The study consisted of 247 articles published in the KJO and randomly chosen 50 articles per year which were original articles and used statistical methods T-test, analysis of variance(ANOVA), correlation analysis, nonparametric analysis. regression analysis chi-square test. factor analysis, were the order of statistical methods most frequently used in the KJO, while t-test. ANOVA, nonparametric analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, chi-square test. factor analysis. were the order of statistical methods used in the AJODO The changes of statistical methods observed in the KJO were not significant $(X^2=17.4\;p=0.5881)$ but the changes observed in the AJODO was seen to be significant $(x^2=42.4,\;p=0.0397)$ Some of the studies examined had overlooked the assumptions of the statistical methods employed. Data investigation such as outlier should be performed before analysis and alternative statistical approaches are applied for a small sample size. Types of advanced statistical methods were factor analysis and discriminant analysis in the KJO and Intention-To-Treat (ITT) analysis in clinical trials through multi-center, survival analysis and Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) in the AJODO. Appropriate analysis approaches and interpretations should be applied for the correlated and repeated measurements of the orthodontic data set.
Collective changes caused by orthodontic tooth movement evaluated in a specific treatment modality could give suggestive information on the specific treatment strategy. The aim of this study was to investigate retrospectively the characteristics of the orthodontic tooth movement during surgical-orthodontic treatment in order to provide an effective presurgical orthodontic treatment planning for the maxillary premolar extraction modality In the skeletal Class III malocclusion patient. Pre- and post-treatment dental casts of skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with nonextraction (N=:24) and the maxillary premolar extraction (N=31) were collected. The angulation and inclination measuring gauge(Invisitech Co. Seoul, Korea) was used to evaluate the orthodontic tooth movement. The changes in the maxillary and mandibular dental arch widths were also measured from the canines to the second molars. As a result, more palatal inclination change in the maxillary dentition was found with the premolar extraction modality than with the nonextraction modality. Linear regression analysis showed that the inter-arch width coordination was mainly due to the inclination changes of maxillary posterior teeth We conclude that the indications and proper treatment planning for surgical-orthodontic treatment in skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary premolar extraction could depend partly on the magnitude of the transverse inter-arch coordination especially in the maxillary dentition.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the root resolution and repair pattern of human teeth according to the force magnitude, direction and duration during the initial leveling and alignment phase. 40gms to 500gms of force applied to the 37 experimental teeth with duration of 3 weeks to 7 months. Then, the experimental teeth were extracted. 13 control teeth were extracted without treatment. The results are as follows: 1. $59.5\%$ of 37 teeth exhibited root resorption. The initial resorption site was visible at the apex within 3 weeks with 100 gms samples, and the initial repair site was visible at the apex within 3 months with 400 gms samples. 2. Number of resorbed teeth increased with the duration of the force. 3. The depth of the resorption increased with the magnitude of the force. 4. The areas of resorbed root corresponded with the loading pattern. 5. The areas of resorbed root were highly correlated with the magnitude of the force. The result of this study suggest that root resorption could occur during the initial leveling and alignment phase, These initial injuries are all small and insignificant. It is the extensive type of apical root resolution that must be regarded as deleterious to the function and stability of the tooth moved. During the initial leveling and alignment phase lighter force of the interrupted type and short treatment period would be favorable with regard to avoidance of root resorption and repair of resorbed root surface.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes in tooth mobility following orthodontic treatment and to obtain information regarding the guideline of retainer wear duration during the post-treatment period. Methods: The sample consisted of twenty patients who had been treated with edgewise appliances. The mobility of the maxillary teeth from the central incisor to the first molar was measured bilaterally by way of the $Periotest^{(R)}$, a non-invasive, electronic device that provides an objective measurement of the reaction of the periodontium to a defined impact load. Tooth mobility was monitored at the time of the removal of the orthodontic appliances and subsequently at three-month intervals during the two years following appliance removal. Results: Tooth mobility decreased rapidly for the first six months and then decreased at a slower rate during the next six months; no statistically significant decrease in mobility was observed during the second year following appliance removal. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that adequate tooth stabilization is critical during the first six months following appliance removal and that continued wearing of retainers is recommended at least until twelve months after the completion of orthodontic treatment.
This study was carried out to investigate and analyze the congnitive degree of dental subjects and general pubic who have an experience to be treated for their teeth on the dental knowledge, operative dentistry, and dental prothesis in the oral health care through the questionnaires. The results are as follows: 1. In the knowledge on the care of dental prothetic stuff, there isn't any significant difference, but the degree of therapeutic knowledge was significantly high as showing 71.6% in I can prevent a gingivits;(P<0.01) Therefore, they have well known an importance of prevention. 2. In the knowledge on the orthodontics, it was appeared to cure their teeth due to an esthetic reason(47.9%). There is not any significance in the Statisics, but it appeared the relatively high knowledge in the time and period of orthodontics(P<0.01) 3. In the congnition on the necessity of dental prothesis, it appeared relatively high, but 'Be necessary' didn't show the significance as 77.2%. The proferance to dental prothesis material showed the similar difference of porcelain(45.6%) and gold(43.7%), and the moderns tend to ptefer porcelain teeth similar to the color of matural teeth in the modern, getting out of the existing cognition of preferring the gold. Accordingly it is considered to be preferentialy necessary the motivae the general public for the oral thealth education on the dental knowledge, operative dentistry, and dental prothesis the knowledge and practice of general public have an important effect upon the oral health as the abovementioned results.
The orthodontic osseointegrated titanium implant, a kind of intraoral skeletal anchorage can be an alternative to tooth-borne anchorage, in case that the conventional tooth-borne anchorage is not available or the anchorage is critical. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of early loading on the osseointegration of the orthodontic titanium implant and the healing process of the impaired bone at the site of implant after removing it. In two adult beagle dogs24 osseointegrated titanium implants were inserted into the alveolar bone, with 12 implants placed in each dog. In dog1, 6 out of 12 implants were loaded with 200-300gm of force immediately after placing, and the remaining 6 implants were not loaded for 4weeks. In dog2, all 12 implants had healing period of 4weeks, and then were loaded with 200-300gm of force for another 4weeks. Following an observation period of 4 and 8 weeks, the animals were sacrificed. Then the implants and the surrounding bone of dog1 and dog2 were removed, respectively. Undecalcified sections along the long axis of implant were made and the degree of osseointegration was examined under the light microscope. The results were as follows. 1. In the histologic features of tissues around implants anchored in dog1, there was no difference between immediately loaded implants and unloaded implants. Immature woven bone was ingrowing into the thread spaces from the original compacta and in direct contact with the implant surface in part. 2. The premature loading just after 4weeks healing period did not halt the progress of the osseointegration between bone and implant surface. The woven bone around the implants was maturing into the lamellar bone which resembled the structure of the original compacta at the end of 8weeks observation period. 3. Most implants with the inflammed surrounding mucosa were lost or mobile. The mobile implants were encapsulated by fibrous connective tissue which separated the implant surface from the bone. 4. The impaired bone at the site of the implant failed to anchor was showing recovery without inflammatory reaction 2weeks after removing, with the immaure woven bone lined by active osteoblasts and osteoid. Based on the results of this study, the integration of this orthodontic implant seemed to be impaired by the inflammation of the tissue surrounding the Implant rather than by early loading on implant, and increased with time lapsed after placing the implant. The use of implant described in this report can be recommended as an orthodontic anchorage unit immediately after insertion under the careful control of orthodontic force applied and plaque.
Although the purpose of orthodontic treatment is to increase the function and esthetics of the jaws along with increasing stability, there are many side effects during the treatment itself, such as root resorption and alveolar bone resorption. Such resorption of the apical root Is unpredictable, and may even proceed into the dentin layer. Once the process has begun, it is irreversible. By evaluating the effect of many oral habits, especially that of nail biting, in correlation with the root and the periodontal tissues, the appropriate biomechanics for orthodontic treatment can be taken into consideration, along with the possibility of root resorption and alveolar bone loss during orthodontic treatment, and any legal problems that might occur. Among the male and female patients of the ages $10\~15$ without skeletal deformity, 63 were chosen as the experiment group with known nail biting habits at time of examination, and within the same age group without nail biting habits as the control. After the orthodontic treatment, number of the experiment group was 31 and the control group was 22. The periapical radiographies of anterior teeth were taken and the assesment of the root length and alveolar bone level were taken before(T1) and after(T2) the orthodontic treatment. The results from this study were as follows : 1. Before the orthodontic treatment, average crown-to-root ratio of the experimental group showed noticeably high values in 4 maxillary incisors and mandibular right central incisor. 2. Before the orthodontic treatment, comparing the root length, maxillary and mandibular right central incisors and both mandibular incisors had a smaller value in the experimental group. 3. Before the orthodontic treatment, comparing and evaluating the alveolar bone loss measured from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest, some crestal bone of the experiment group showed greater loss than the control. 4. After the orthodontic treatment, there was shortening of the root length and loss of the crestal bone in both groups. 5. After the orthodontic treatment, the changes of C/R ratio and the shortening of root length were significantly high in the experimental group. 6. After the orthodontic treatment, the level of alveolar crestal bone showed greater loss in the experimental group.
