High-Frequency Modeling of Printed Spiral Coil Probes for Radio-Frequency Interference Measurement (무선주파수 간섭 측정을 위한 Printed Spiral Coil (PSC) 프로브의 고주파 모델링)

  • In this paper, a new high-frequency equivalent circuit model of printed spiral coils (PSCs) for radio-frequency interference (RFI) measurement has been proposed. To achieve high-frequency modeling, the proposed model consists of distributed components designed based on the design parameters of the PSCs. In addition, an analytic model for PSCs based on T-pi conversion has been proposed. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed model for RFI measurement, the transfer function between a microstrip line and a PSC has been extracted by combining the proposed model and mutual inductance. The self-impedances of the proposed model and the transfer function have been successfully validated using three-dimensional field simulation and measurements, revealing noticeable correlations up to a frequency of 6 GHz. The proposed model can be employed for high-frequency probe design and RFI noise estimation in the gigahertz range wireless communication bands.

  • The use of an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometric amplitude modulator to measure a relatively low frequency electric field strength is described. The sensitivity of an electric field sensor using a Ti:LiNbO$_3$ optical modulator is strongly affected by the shape of a electrode(probe antenna). To measure the low frequency electric field, a probe antenna of wide effective area is more useful than the usual dipole antenna. As a proof of this, the optical modulator was fabricated with a plate-type probe antenna and the usefulness of this antenna tested for measuring low frequency electric field strength. Measurements were performed in the range 0.1V/cm to 60V/cm at 60Hz through 100KHz. Using a probe antenna of 10mm$\times$10mm, the output voltage of 10㎷ was measured with respect to the electric field strength of 0.1V/cm at 60Hz. By increasing the effective area of the probe antenna, better sensitivity is obtainable over the measured range.

The Effect of Finite Flange of Open-Ended Coaxial Probe on the Converted Complex Permittivity of PCB Substrate (개방 단말 동축선 프로브의 유한한 접지판이 PCB 기판의 복소 유전율 환산에 미치는 영향)

  • To construct its complex permittivity from the reflection coefficient of a thin film such as PCB substrate measured by open-ended coaxial probe, an integral equation is formulated using modal analysis and equivalent source. The accuracy of the conversion model based on the integral equation is confirmed in both cases of converted complex permittivities calculated from numerically computed and actually measured reflection coefficients. And the maximum valid frequency of open-ended coaxial probe is limited by the size of its flange.

  • A probe card is one of the most important pan of test systems as testing IC(integrated circuit) chips. This work was related to bump-type silicon vertical probe card which enabled simultaneous tests for multiple semiconductor chips. The probe consists of silicon cantilever with bump tip. In order to obtain optimum size of the cantilever, the dimensions were determined by FEM(finite element method) analysis. The probe was fabricated by RIE(reactive ion etching), isotropic etching, and bulk-micromachining using SDB(silicon direct bonding) wafer. The optimum height of the bump of the probe detemimed by FEM simulation was 30um. The optimum thickness, width, and length of the cantilever were 20 $\mum$, 100 $\mum$,and 400 $\mum$,respectively. Contact resistance of the fabricated probe card measured at contact resistance testing was less than $2\Omega$. It was also confirmed that its life time was more than 20,000 contacts because there was no change of contact resistance after 20,000 contacts.

Soil Water Characteristic Curve Using Volumetric Pressure Plate Extractor Incorporated with TDR System (TDR 측정시스템이 도입된 압력판 추출 시험기를 이용한 흙-함수특성곡선 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the volumetric water content of unsaturated soils during drying and wetting process by using volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) incorporated with time domain reflectometry (TDR). The VPPE consists of a pressure cell, a pressure regulator, a burette system and a TDR probe. Two samples with different initial void ratios were prepared in the pressure cell, and the air pressure at the range of 0.1 kPa - 50 kPa was applied to adjust the matric suction by the pressure regulator. The burette system was used to measure the volumetric water content change of the sample according to the matric suction. In addition, the TDR probe, installed in the cell, was used to evaluate the dielectric constant from the reflected signal of the electromagnetic wave at the probe. The volumetric water content of specimen was estimated by the empirical equation between the volumetric water content and dielectric constant, which was calibrated with the Jumunjin sand. The test results show that the volumetric water content calculated by TDR probe is strongly correlated to the measured value by burette system. The hysteresis occurs during drying and wetting process. Furthermore, the degree of hysteresis reduces in the repeated process. This study suggests that TDR may be effectively used to evaluate the water content soil for the determination of water characteristic curve of unsaturated soils.

A Pilot Study of Stiffness Mesurements for Tunnel-Face Materials Using In-hole Seismic Method (인홀 시험을 이용한 터널 막장의 암반강성 측정에 대한 적용성 연구)

  • The research concentrates on improving the in-hole seismic probe, which has been developed in past five years, to be used in stiffness measurements of tunnel-face materials. The size of probe was reduced to be fit in 45-mm diameter holes (or BX) drilled by a jumbo-drill, which is used to drill holes to install explosives for tunneling. Also trigger system was improved by using a down-speeding motor for operating convenience and air packing system was replaced with a set of plate-springs to eliminate supply of compressed air. These modifications are to adjust the probe for the unfavourable environment inside of tunnels and to test without any further drilling cost. The probe and testing procedure were successfully adopted with horizontal holes drilled by a jumbo-drill at a tunnel-face to evaluate the stiffness of rock mass. The measured shear wave velocities can be used to estimate deformation properties of rock mass for tunnel analyses.

FDTD Verification of an Improved Conversion Model for an Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (개방단말 동축선 프로브의 개선된 환산모델에 대한 FDTD 검증)

  • The complex permittivities of methanol measured from 0.2 to 2.0 ㎓ using an open-ended coaxial probe revealed the large deviation from the given data in literature. In this paper, it was investigated whether the given or measured complex permittivity is similar to the real value of our methanol used for experiment. The FDTD method was applied to confirm the effect of our conversion model excluding the effect of sufficiently small measurement error. The complex permittivities reconverted from the computed reflection coefficient by employing our improved conversion model were not similar to the given value but measured value. These results assured the accuracy and stability of our measurement-and-conversion process.

  • A novel sensitive and non-invasive ring-type glucose probe was designed and measured. The magnitude and phase of return loss change with different concentration of the glucose solution inside the loop structure. Ring type probe is more advantageous than open ended probe to measure electrical characteristics under the skin. The maximum difference of return loss was 0.94 for the concentration difference of 0% and 20% at 285MHz and more sensitive in low frequency.

  • The enhancement of antenna near-field measurements is obtained using a general probe compensation equation based on the Lorentz reciprocity theorem and reciprocity notation. The probe compensation is an essential process of the near-field to far-field transformations. Applying the equation proposed in this paper to a planar scanning for a rectangular horn antenna shows that our near-field radiation pattern is similar to that of a far-field and our theory is very simple to use and suitable for most practical applications.

  • A new method of measuring the Brillouin gain spectrum of optical fiber is proposed and demonstrated. Unlike existing methods, both the pump light and the counter-propagating probe light are generated from a single laser diode whose optical frequency is directly modulated by injection current modulation. The frequency difference between the pump and the probe is scanned continuously through optical frequency chirp occurring when the injection current is modulated with a square wave. The measured Brillouin gain spectrum of telecom single-mode fiber agrees well with that shown in other literature.
