  • This study attempts to predict the changes in the spatial distribution of occupational employment in Korea by applying Markov Chain Model. For the purpose we analyze the job-related migration pattern and estimate the transition probability with the last six years job-related migration data. By applying the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation based on the transition probability, we predict the changes in the spatial distribution of occupational employment for the next ten years. The result reveals that the employment of professional jobs is predicted to increase at every city and region except Seoul, while the employment of elementary labor jobs is predicted to increase slightly in Seoul. In particular, Gangwon-do and Chuncheongdo are predicted to increase in the employment of all occupational jobs.

  • This study provides the insight into the aged employment provision issue for the aged-low growth era. For the purpose, we analyze the national trend of the age demographic and occupational employment in first. And then we investigate the spatial characteristics of employment of the aged in the Seoul Metropolitan area which has the highest elderly population by utilizing location quotient, factor analysis, and K-means cluster analysis. As the result, we found that the spatial distribution patterns of the residence and workplace of the elderly were nearly coincided with each other. Furthermore, five clusters of the aged distribution have been determined according to the industrial-occupational-demographic attributes. The result revealed clear spatial segrmentation: Most of elderly population of the research area have been engaged in the low-level service jobs, while elderly population employed to the educated-knowledged based high-level jobs has been distributed at a few cores. The results could be applied to the practical use for regional employment planning for the aged.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of work experience during higher education on employment. In particular, the study analyzed the difference in employment and permanent employment according to work experience or internship. In addition, the effects of the relatedness of college major and work experience as well as internship on college graduates' employment or permanent employment were investigated. The data came from the 2013 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey (GOMS). The study covered the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The study found that there was a significant difference in the employment and permanent employment among the groups classified by work experience or internship. Internship had a positive effect on college graduates' permanent employment. Based on the study results, this study suggests that policies for internship during higher education need to be enhanced. The match between employment and the field of study in college needs to be increased. Interventions and policies for the establishment of competency-based employment should be improved.

  • This study attempts to understand new immigrants' socio-economic adaptation by linking them with the restructuring economies in large US metropolitan areas. Selecting Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta, we examine the industrial distribution of employed Hispanic and Asian immigrant groups with respect to the industrial change experienced between 1980 and 1990, and residential concentration represented by higher location quotients. The findings are that new immigrant groups are employed in overall industrial sectors close to that of total population and their large residential concentrations are displayed near downtown as well as outlying areas. These suggest that new immigrant groups experience different socio-economic adaptation from those generalized in the previous European immigrants, concentrated in manufacturing sector and near downtown area. This study proposes that divergent economic restructuring across metropolitan areas and new immigrants' backgrounds should be considered for better understanding of immigrants' economic adaptation in the current economic restructuring and its spatial manifestation in the US contexts.

  • For a thorough accounting for economic growth, it is desired to include the working hours and the efficiency of labor as production factors in addition to the number of workers and human and physical capital stocks. This paper estimates the distribution of weekly working hours of total workers as a continuous variable using the maximum likelihood method, estimates the efficiency of labor as a function of working hours using wage statistics, and by combining these results, estimates the labor efficiency index in Korea for the period 1963~2003. Estimation results show that the efficiency of labor was maximized when the weekly working hours was 40 hours, and the average annual growth rate of the labor efficiency for the period 1963~2003 was 0.14 percent.

  • Regarding human capital development and the competitive advantage of regional economies, the transfer of local university graduates to the local labor market is a very important factor. This study aims to investigate the employment structure of university graduates and spatial patterns of their jobs, and the job search strategies to enter the employment system with a case study of Chonnam National University graduates. Because of the lagged industrial structure and peripheral location of Kwangju/Chonnam Province, the employment rate of the university graduates is generally lower than a national average. And there is a strong tendency of the concentration of job places on the metropolitan areas on the one hand, and on the Kwangju/chonnarn and Capital region of Korea on the other. University graduates in searching for jobs especially prefer spatial mobility toward job opportunities In other regions to promoting the flexibility of job qualifications to meet labor market demands. Based on the results of the study, we can identify a process of so-called train drains'in both quantitative and qualitative terms, and conclude that the role of the Chonnam National University in promoting regional development potentials and local labor market conditions is Quite restrictive.

  • This paper estimates the effect of household size and its changes on income inequality. Household formation is an important inequality-reducing mechanism through income pooling and collective consumption. The increase in small households, reflecting lower fertility rate and the increase in both nuclear and old families, has weakened the inequality-reducing effect of household formation. In contrast, additional workers in households and their income have strengthened the inequality-reducing effect of household formation. Given the increasing trend of old families, these results suggest for a balanced policy package that promotes employment and does not discourage co-habitation in order to maintain the inequality-reducing effect of household formation.

  • This study aims to investigate the changes in the occupational structure of employment in Korea during the last three decades, in which have transformed from industrialized economy to knowledge-based economy very rapidly as well as having experiences of both IMF and financial crisis. For this purpose, we analyze the trends occupational distribution and the socio-demographic characteristics of the occupational structure of employment since 1980. By applying correspondence analysis of Multidimensional Scaling(MDS) methods, we examine the inter-relationships between the employed persons by occupation and their characteristics such as gender, age group, educational attainment, industry, region. We found the occupational structure of Korea has been changed dramatically with the socio-economic transformations during the last four decades. In particular, the occupational (job) structure has been highered in general. However, it has also been dualized extremely into two groups, one is the specialized-skilled-white color jobs and the other is the simple-unskilled-blue color jobs. The results of this study could be utilized as the importation basis for the provision of labour supply and employment policy plan at the national level as well as at the local level.
