  • Currently the mathematics gifted students educational program is plentifully being developed for the elementary and the junior high school students. But the educational program for the gifted students who comes and goes to the high school is not many. This study look for the regularity and generalization of Hanoi Tower with 4 pillars, from the regularity and generalization of Hanoi Tower with 3 pillars. I think this study will be a clue to find the regularity and generalization of Hanoi Tower with n pillars, it's not solved still.

  • This study analyzed the 2009 revised curriculum 6th grade math geometric domain and developed virtual operation tool contents based RME theory. These materials were examine to find out how to effect on the spatial sense and mathematical attitudes by applying it to teach the 6th grade students. The results were as follows. First, it is more effective for improving spatial sense to study mathematics based RME theory with virtual operation tool contents than normal one. This means that mathematics study based RME theory with virtual operation contents overcomes the limitations of flat learning environment. And it is great educational and effective method for students to improve their spatial sense. Second, it is more effective for improving mathematical attitudes to study mathematics based RME theory with virtual operation tool contents than normal one. This means that Mathematics study based RME theory with virtual operation contents makes student more participate learning actively. It helps the students who have passive learning habits to have self-directed learning habits, ability to cooperation and communicate. The results of this study suggest that mathematics study based RME theory is very helpful for student to improve their spatial sense and have positive effect on self-concept in mathematics, attitudes toward mathematics and improving study habits in mathematical attitudes.

  • In terms of making more various geometrical figures than existing Tangram, Sphinx Puzzle has been used as a material for the gifted education. The main research subject of this paper is to verify how many convex polygons can be made by all pieces of a Sphinx Puzzle. There are several previous researches which dealt with this research subject, but they did not account for the clear reasons on the elementary level. In this thesis, I suggest using unit area and minimum area which can be proved on the elementary levels to account for this research subject. Also, I composed the program for the mathematically gifted elementary students, regarding the subject. I figured out whether they can make the mathematical justifications. I applied this program for three 6th grade students who are in the gifted class of the G district office of education. As a consequence, I found that it is possible for some mathematically gifted elementary students to justify that the number of convex polygons that can be made by a Sphinx Puzzle is at best 27 on elementary level.

  • The purpose of this study is the reorganization of the curriculum on the measurement, a part of the second grade math curriculum, for the improvement of the estimation capability in the elementary school students. Research questions were as follows: (1) how are the estimation capabilities of the students who have taken lessons on the diversified estimation strategies? and (2) how are the mathematical writing capabilities of the students who have taken lessons on the diversified estimation strategies? The study using reconstructed lessons was conducted on 18 second grade students in an elementary school located in Seoul. Results show that the students' estimation capabilities and have improved. They started to use 'about' when writing estimation results, different from writing the accurate measurements. Measurement errors were gradually reduced, ending up with a student who could accurately estimate exactly 1m. In addition, their estimation capabilities in using appropriate estimation strategy and writing skills describing the estimation strategy have improved.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the process of reading and understanding mathematics lesson plan through eye-tracking to suggest implications of pre-service teacher education. As a result of the analysis, the pre-service teachers felt that the mathematics lesson plans were more difficult than the experienced teacher, they read and understood the mathematics lesson plan in sequential order. Experienced teachers, on the other hand, used a hypertext reading strategy to find key topics and make connections in order to grasp the flow of instruction in mathematics lesson plan. Based on these results, several suggestions were drawn for pre-service teachers when teaching their ability to read and understand mathematics lesson plan.

  • Many current researches are limited in the statistics field, which is a part of mathematics class in the secondary school. Moreover, it's hard to apply to the elementary school since they are written in English. To overcome this limitations, the objectives from the unit that is suitable for using EXCEL in the elementary mathematics lessons are selected in this research. And a problem-based learning model for these lessons would be introduced that it can help students to focus on solving substances of the problems by reducing the time for arithmetic calculation.

  • This study investigated instructional methods for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking with sixth graders. Specifically, instructional elements for fractional division emphasizing algebraic thinking were derived from literature reviews, and the fractional division instruction was reorganized on the basis of key elements. The instructional elements were as follows: (a) exploring the relationship between a dividend and a divisor; (b) generalizing and representing solution methods; and (c) justifying solution methods. The instruction was analyzed in terms of how the key elements were implemented in the classroom. This paper focused on the fractional division instruction with problem contexts to calculate the quantity of a dividend corresponding to the divisor 1. The students in the study could explore the relationship between the two quantities that make the divisor 1 with different problem contexts: partitive division, determination of a unit rate, and inverse of multiplication. They also could generalize, represent, and justify the solution methods of dividing the dividend by the numerator of the divisor and multiplying it by the denominator. However, some students who did not explore the relationship between the two quantities and used only the algorithm of fraction division had difficulties in generalizing, representing, and justifying the solution methods. This study would provide detailed and substantive understandings in implementing the fractional division instruction emphasizing algebraic thinking and help promote the follow-up studies related to the instruction of fractional operations emphasizing algebraic thinking.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the effects 6th grade mathematics lessons applying story making have on the mathematics achievement and attitude toward mathematics. For this study, using two examination devices for measuring mathematical attitudes and mathematics learning achievement, a pre-test and post-test were conducted. In the pre-test, it was found that the two groups are identical groups. The post-test was used for verifying the research problems and the results of post-test were analyzed using t-test. The findings of this study are below. First, lessons applying story making influenced the mathematics achievement of children. This implies that lessons applying story making are more effective for improving a mathematics achievement than a general teaching and learning method. Also, when carrying out the t-test of pre-test and post-test results of learning achievement in experimental groups, there was a significant change as well. It is therefore supposed that lessons applying story making have positive effect on the mathematics achievement of children. Second, lessons applying story making influenced the mathematical attitudes of children. Also, when carrying out the t-test of pre-test and post-test results of mathematical attitudes in experimental groups, there was a significant change as well. It is therefore supposed that lessons applying story making have positive effect on mathematical attitudes of children. From the results, it was found that mathematics lessons applying story making can be used to change the mathematics achievement and mathematical attitudes of students positively.
