  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the effects of fitness walking exercise on physique, BMI(body mass index) and physical fitness of 5th and 6th grade elementary children. The subjects for this study were 200 children(57 boys and 39 girls in the 5th grade, and 59 boys and 45 girls in the 6th grade) at S Elementary school in Busan. The students were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 walked more than 500 km. Group 2 walked less than 500 km but more than 200 km and Group 3 walked less than 200 km for 6 months. The result of exercising for 6 months affected the physique, BMI and physical fitness of the students analyzed as follows: In physique, height, weight and BMI had significantly positive increased in the 5th and 6th grade boys and girls in all groups as comparing before and after exercising. In physical fitness, there were significantly positive increased on 50 m run, sit-ups, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, 1000 m run-walk had in all groups by stages(group 1 > 2 > 3) as comparing before and after exercising. In compare groups after exercising, there were significantly positive increased in physical fitness on group 1 more than group 3. These results indicate that fitness walking exercise by long time is effective to improve physique and physical fitness in normal elementary school students. However, for fitness walking exercise of the positive effects are necessary to change of teachers and parents personal mind.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of teaching mathematics for social justice on students'interest towards mathematics and perceptions of mathematical values. Eighteen 6th grade students, at B elementary school in Seocho-gu, Seoul, who wished to involved in the study participated in the 10 hour lessons. During the lessons for social justice, the researchers analyzed the students' reactions in the lessons according to the three categories: Perceiving given problematic situations of social conflicts, searching for problem-solving methods based on mathematical analysis, and changing social behaviors to solve life issues through mathematics. They also examined changes of students' interest towards mathematics and perceptions of mathematical values through the activities and reactions using the preliminary questionnaires, observations of lessons, and students' activity sheets. The research results showed that the students perceived mathematics as a tool for social justice in mathematics lessons, tried to find problem-solving methods based on mathematical analysis, and expressed their active social behaviors by cultivating the will of practice to solve life issues through mathematics. Based on those findings, the study reached the following conclusions. First, the students recognize many of the social problems in their societies as social justice regardless of their economic levels. Second, learning activities need to design in a way that students can accept the social problems as realistic situations in teaching mathematics for social justice. Third, students look at the world from a mathematical perspective, have interest in mathematics, and recognize the values of mathematics in teaching mathematics for social justice.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze some Korean elementary pre-service teachers' Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT) and compare the results with those obtained by Kwon, Nam, & Kim(2009), so that we can provide some suggestions to improve education of elementary mathematics subject at Korean teachers colleges. For this purpose, we selected the MKT items on number and operations which were adapted for Korean in-service teachers by Kwon et al. The survey consisting of those items was administered to 88 Korean elementary pre-service teachers at teachers college, J University. The results are the following: First, the respondents, elementary pre-service teachers, showed that they already had a sufficient amount of Content Knowledge(CK) on number and operations, but that their level of Knowledge of Content and Students(KCS) was insufficient. This means we need to strengthen our students' KCS in education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges. Second, there was a strong correlation, in both CK and KCS, of item difficulty felt by the respondents with that by the Kwon et al's in-service teachers. Third, although the respondents valued the MKT items more than the above-mentioned elementary in-service teachers, about 70% of them said the items were never learned at their college. Furthermore, they had different opinions on some of the items from their counterparts'. The suggestions we get here are we need to first consider the results in improving education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges and second develop MKT items suitable for the situation of Korean schools and curriculums in order to obtain exact estimations of Korean elementary pre-service teachers' MKT.

  • If students are not aware of the information security, they easily let others know their information or they use others' information with no sense of guilt. The information security education is necessary to protect and prevent students from cyber crime. However, South Korea's information curriculum has no specific information security education course and it has led a school or teacher to teach contents of information ethics superficially. The purpose of this paper is to find the factors affecting the information security practice of the elementary school students. For an empirical analysis, questionnaire survey was conducted and the Partial Least Square(PLS) was used to analyze the research model. The analysis results show that the information ethics awareness and the information security awareness have a positive impact on the information security practice. The results of this study are expected to help choose the specific information security curriculum required for the information security practice of elementary school students.
