An intergral C-V converter is proposed to solve the nonlinearity problem of capacitive pressure sensors. The integral C-V converter consists of a switched-capacitor integrator and a switched-capacitor differential amplifier. It converts the sensor capacitance change which is inversely proportional to an applied pressure into a linear voltage output. Various PSPICE simulations prove that the convertor has excellent characteristics, such as low nonlinearity less than 0.01%/FS and low sensitivity to parallel offset capacitance and parasitic capacitance for the displacement range of sensor diaphragm set to 0 ${\sim}$ 90% of the initial distance between the electrodes in the simulation. We also show that the offset compensation and the gain trimming are easily achieved with the integral C-V converter.

This paper proposes an efficient method for 3D modeling of a human face from trinocular images by reconstructing face surface using range data. By using a trinocular camera system, we mitigated the tradeoff between the occlusion problem and the range resolution limitation which is the critical limitation in binocular camera system. We also propose an MPC_MBS (Matching Pixel Count Multiple Baseline Stereo) area-based matching method to reduce boundary overreach phenomenon and to improve both of accuracy and precision in matching. In this method, the computing time can be reduced significantly by removing the redundancies. In the model generation sub-pixel accurate surface data are achieved by 2D interpolation of disparity values, and are sampled to make regular triangular meshes. The data size of the triangular mesh model can be controlled by merging the vertices that lie on the same plane within user defined error threshold.

This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm, that is, adaptive Newton-Raphson iteration method, The presented algorithm is based on the existing Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of it can be summarized as calculating the equivalent load for stiffness(ELS) and adapting this to the initial global stiffness matrix which has already been calculated and saved in initial analysis and finally calculating the correction displacements for the nonlinear analysis, The key characteristics of the proposed algorithm is that it calculates the inverse matrix of the global stiffness matrix only once irresponsive of the number of load steps. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm depends on the ratio of the active Dofs - the Dofs which are directly connected to the members of which the element stiffness are changed - to the total Dofs, and based on this ratio by using the proposed algorithm as a complementary method to the existing algorithm the efficiency of the nonlinear analysis can be improved dramatically.

Topology optimization techniques have been developed as a very efficient design tool and utilized for design engineering processes in many industrial sections during the past decade. And topology optimization has become the focus into structural optimization design up to now. Recently, thermally actuated compliant mechanisms have a wide range of applications. In this research, the thermo-elastic problem is a coupled problem which has to consider heat transfer analysis and structural analysis. Hence, the thermo-elastic problem has to deal with heat transfer material properties and structural material properties at the same time. The numerical examples are presented. From the results, it was shown that in terms of the displacement after optimization. Moreover, this paper compared thermo-system, elastic-system with thermo-elastic system and was shown a good result of topology optimization while thermo-elastic system was used.

An isogeometric topological shape optimization method is developed using the level sets and Heaviside enrichments. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set functions, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. The Heaviside enrichment improves the isogeometric analysis by adding some enrichment functions to model the internal boundaries. The proposed topological shape optimization method has several benefits: exact geometric models can be obtained using the isogeometric approach and the limitation of tensor-product patches can be overcome using the Heaviside enrichments to represent the internal voids. Even in a single patch, discontinuous displacement fields as well as smooth stress field can be obtained. Since the level sets offer the implicit moving boundary inside the domain, it is easy to represent the topological shape variations in the isogeometric analysis using Heaviside enrichments.
On development of mountaneous or hilly area, stability of cut slope should be provided to prevent undesirable landslides. When piles are used as a countermeasure to stabilize existing landslide, stabilities for both piles and slope should be simultaneously satisfied to obtain the whole stability of the slope reinforced by piles. In order to confirm the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stabilization, it is necessary to investigate the behavior of the slope, in which the piles are installed. In this paper, first, the countermeasures used commonly to control unstable slope in Korea were summerized systematically. Nezt, the behavior of piles and slope soil was investigated by instrumentation installed into a cut slope for an apartment stabilized by a row of piles. Instrumentation could present sufficient effect of piles on slope stabilization Construction works in front of the row of piles affected the displacement of piles and slope. The construction works were divided into four stages, i.e. initial cutting stage of slope, excavation stages for retaining wall and parking space, and construction of retaining wall. As the result of research, the applicability of the proposed design method could be confirmed sufficiently.
The nonlinear-brittle-plastic model derived from experiments as well as elastic and elasto-plastic models was applied to the analysis of the rock damaged zone around a highly stressed circular tunnel. The depths of stress redistribution and disturbed zone as well as the characteristic behaviors predicted from each numerical model were compared, As the magnitudes and stress differences of in situ stresses increased, influences of stress redistribution and stress disturbance on un(tiled region of rock mass also intensified. As a result, larger stress redistribution and disturbed zone as well as greater deviatoric stress and displacement were obtained by the nonlinear-brittle-plastic model rather than other conventional models such as elasto-plastic and elastic models. from such results, it was concluded that as the magnitudes and stress differences of in situ stresses increased, larger rock damaged zone might be predicted by the nonlinear-brittle-plastic model. Therefore, it is thought that the damage analysis may be indispensable far highly stressed tunnels.

In this study, crack resistance is evaluated by the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) using a wedge splitting test (WST) on a viscoelastic particulate reinforced composite based on an HTPB binder. Generally, CTOA, as a function of crack extension, is used in order to determinate fracture resistance and has a steady state relative angle. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used to measure the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack extension for the critical crack tip opening angle (CTOAc). In these results, the CTOAc value of a particulate reinforced composite tends to approach a constant angle after a small amount of crack extension. The CTOAc value increases with decreasing temperature, from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$. These CTOAc values may be used to measure fracture mechanics parameters for particulate reinforced composite.
The strain fields due to precipitates, especially S-phase $(Al_2CuMg)$ particles in Al-2.5Cu-1.5Mg wt.% alloy were first investigated with Large Angle Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (LACBED) method. The work involves LACBED pattern simulations to estimate possibly the strength of the strain fields. To do this the morphology of S-particle was optimized as a cylindrical shape with $a_s$ axis, and the displacement vector of strain fields was assumed to be perpendicular to $a_s$ axis. With this simple model the reasonable fittings between the observed patterns of the strain fields and simulations were obtained. And in the early aging stage of the alloy the significant strain fields were not observed. As a result of this study it is expected that the strain fields due to S-phase precipitates in the stage with maximum hardness would make a complex networks to possibly contribute to hardiness of the alloy.

The spindle is the main component in machine tools. The static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle directly affect the machining accuracy of workpieces. The characteristics of the spindle depend on the shaft size, bearing span, built-in motor location, and so on. Therefore, the appropriate selection of these parameters is important to improve the spindle characteristics. This paper presents the analysis of the static and dynamic characteristics and optimization design of a 40,000-rpm high-speed spindle. Statistical analysis for optimization and finite element analysis were performed. This study uses the response surface method to optimize the objective function and design factors. The targets are the natural frequency and displacement. The design factors are the shaft length, shaft diameter, bearing span, and motor location. The optimized design provides better results than the initial model, and these results are expected to improve the static and dynamic characteristics of the spindle.
