  • This study demonstrates the association between total sleep duration of adolescents, and its effects on their physical and mental health. Chi-square test and the multiple logistic regression model were applied to analyze the data collected in 2018 by the Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey (n = 52,928), conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Our analysis indicates increased suicidal ideation with insufficient total sleep duration as per the recommended amount and grade (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.06-1.29, p-value: 0.00]. Especially, insufficient sleep among adolescent girls significantly increases the risk of suicidal thoughts (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.06-1.41, p-value: 0.01). Sufficient sleep showed reduced risk of suicidal ideation among boys (OR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71-0.96, p-value: 0.02). We propose that to reduce the risk of suicide among teenagers, policy considerations are required to ensure sufficient sleep.

  • This study was conducted to identify the impact of adolescents' dietary behavior on their stress perception and provide basic data for education programs linked to customized nutrition education by gender. In this study, the 2019 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey was used, and a total of 57,303 middle·high school students were selected. Controlling adolescents' age, school record, economic status, residence type, subjective health and body type perception, and the dietary life variables designed with breakfast, fresh foods(fruit, vegetables, milk, water), processed foods(carbonate beverage, energy beverage, sweet beverage, fast food) were analyzed to have an effects on the stress recognition of adolescents. Breakfast had a negative(-) effect on stress perception in all genders of adolescents, and in the case of fresh food, water for boys and fruit for girls had the highest negative(-) effect on stress perception, and in the case of processed foods, energy drink was the dietary factor that had the highest positive(+) effect on adolescents' stress perception. These results suggest that it is necessary to develop a dietary education program tailored to the gender of adolescents to improve their stress perception, and to provide continuous guidance to form a healthy diet.

It conducted a composite sample χ2 test of 54,848 adolescents, to understand differences in the self-rated health depending on their sociodemographic characteristics, stress and depression levels, and also implemented a logistic regression analysis, to verify the factors influencing their sense of self-rated health. As a result of the study, Male students were healthier than female students; students with greater scholarly attainments and higher economic levels were more healthier; and students who had less stress and experienced no depression showed higher sense of self-rated health. Therefore, in order to improve the self-rated health of adolescents, it is necessary to continuously manage through the establishment of a customized health promotion program.
