  • This study examines the effects of adolescents' volunteer activities on their development of sense of community. When examining the effects of volunteer activities, both quantity and quality sides of volunteer activities were considered in the research model and besides the direct effects of volunteer activities on their sense of community, the mediating role of self-esteem and peer attachment were also examined. The data set of conducted by National Youth Policy Institute was reanalyzed for this study. The subjects of this study were 1,426 first-grade middle school students who had experiences of volunteer activities. The results of the study are as follows. First, the total hours of volunteer activities and the satisfaction with volunteer activities were positively related to their sense of community respectively. In an integrative model which combines both quantity and quality aspects of volunteer activities, however, only the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to be significant. This means that the satisfaction with and reflective learning after volunteer activities are more important sides of adolescents' volunteer activities than whether and how many times they had experiences in volunteer activities. Second, the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to enhance adolescents' self-esteem and peer attachment and the changes in their personal traits again led to a higher sense of community. Therefore, both the direct effects of volunteer activities and indirect effects through self-esteem and peer attachment were proved. Based on the results of the study, the need and ways to improve the management system of adolescents' volunteer activities were suggested.

  • There have been constant studies on adolescents' fandom activities since the 2000s. Since their fandom activities are a subculture of adolescents, it is necessary to recognize it as such and to help them in a way that minimizes its adverse effects. In this regard, this study examined the effects of fandom activities on life satisfaction and examined whether or not self-esteem has a moderating effect. To this end, the study used the 6th year data of first graders of elementary school from Korea Youth Panel Survey conducted by Korea Youth Policy Institute and analyzed the data of a total of 1,088 of them. The results of this study are as follows: First, a negative correlation was found between their fandom activities and life satisfaction and between their fandom activities and self-esteem. A positive correlations was found between their fandom activities and life satisfaction, Second, it was found that adolescents' fandom activities negatively affected life satisfaction while self-esteem had a moderating effect on the relationship between fandom activities and life satisfaction. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it identified the variable that can moderate the negative role of adolescents' fandom activities, which provided a basis for future in-depth studies on the relationship between adolescents' fandom activities, individual internal variables, and life satisfaction.

  • This study was a secondary data analysis using statistics from the 13th (2017) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) to investigate the relationship between health behaviors and physical activity among Korean adolescents. A total of 62,276 adolescents in middle and high schools enrolled in this study. Physical activity utilized moderate and vigorous physical activity variables. Health behaviors used smoking, drinking, eating, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration variables. Statistical analyses were performed applying complex sample analysis method. Chi-square tests were used to compare physical activity according to health behaviors. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between health behaviors and physical activity, adjusted for general characteristics. Current smoking and current drinking were associated with high levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Consuming fruits≥1 times/day, vegetables≥3 times/day, and sweet drinks≥3 times/week were associated with high levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Eating breakfast≥5 times/week was associated with high levels of moderate physical activity, but not with vigorous physical activity. Sedentary behavior≥2 hour/day was associated with low levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity. Sleep duration<7 hour/day was associated with high levels of moderate physical activity and low levels of vigorous physical activity. These findings suggest that since there is an interrelationship between health behaviors and physical activity among adolescents, intervention programs aiming at promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles should consider a multiple behavior approach rather than an individual behavior approach.

This study performed a secondary analysis of the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2020. Complex-sample descriptive statistics and the chi-square test were used for data analysis in SPSS 27. As a result, 60.9% of adolescents engaged in physical activity for more than 60 minutes a day and 39.1% of those did not. The level of anxiety among adolescents was found to be mild anxiety at 22.2%, moderate anxiety at 7.6%, and severe anxiety at 3.6%. A significant association was found between physical activity and anxiety levels (p <.001). Therefore, there should be a plan to increase physical activity in the national policy for the promotion of youth mental health.
