  • The content of nitrate and nitrite in germinating soybean was studied in relation to ascorbic acid contents. Nitrate content during soybean germination gradually increased, and root was higher than cotyledon and hypocotyl. Nitrite content was relatively low and maintained under the 1 ppm during germination period. Ascorbic acid content was maximum around 4 days after germination.

  • Recovery of acids from the waste etching solution of containing acetic, nitric and hydrofluoric acid discharged from silicon wafer manufacturing process has been attempted by using solvent extraction method. EHA(2-Ethylhexlalcohol) for acetic acid and TBP(Tri-butly Phosphate) for nitric and hydrofluoric acid as a extraction agent was used to the experiment to obtain the process design data in separation procedure. From the experimental data and McCabe-Thiele diagram analysis, we obtained the optimum conditions of phase ratio(O/A) and stages to separate each acid sequently from the mixed acids. The recovery yield was obtained above 90% for acetic acid from the acid mixtures, 90% for nitric acid from acetic acid extraction raffinate and then above 67% for hydrofluoric acid from final extraction raffinate.

  • It is a serious task to the decommissioning of the uranium conversion plant that the demolition of the lagoon sludge. The main component of the sludge is ammonium nitrate and that is the very explosive material. Therefore, the bio-denitrification is a attractive process to remove the nitrate. In this work, some process variables was tested such as incubation temperature, nitrate concentration, electron donor, C/N ratio, seeding ratio, and pH with an anaerobic bacteria as Pseudomonas halodenitrificans. The results would be used as basic data to the continuous bio-denitrification process.

  • The origin of nitrate in confined groundwater was studied using oxygen ($\delta$180), hydrogen ($\delta$D), and nitrogen ($\delta$15N) stable isotopes, along with chemical data of NO3-N. We analyzed groundwaters from more than sixty manufactories producing natural mineral waters around the country During the period of 1998-2001, an average value of nitrate was fair]y low (0.95 mg/$\ell$), however, groundwaters from six sites showed more than 2 mg/$\ell$ of nitrate. The stable isotope data of the groundwaters are -8.3~-11 $\textperthousand$ $\delta$8O, -60~-75 $\textperthousand$ $\delta$D, which lies in an average range of the groundwaters. The nitrogen isotope data with -11.8~-5.1$\textperthousand$ $\delta$15N suggest that manure, organic nitrate, and fertilizers can not be the origin of nitrate in the goundwaters.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate net mineralization and nitrification in rain shelter soil incorporated with wine sludge. Net mineralization and nitrification rates varied among treatments during pepper growing periods. In general, net mineralization increased up to 90 days after transplanting before its decrease during the rest growing periods. Maximum net mineralization and nitrification in upper 0-15 cm layer soil were observed in T4 at 90 days after transplanting. The greatest amount of mineralization in upper layer soil was 272.5 mg.kg$^{-1}$ at 30 days in the control and 843.3 mg.kg$^{-1}$ at 90 days after transplanting in T4. Overall, both net mineralization and net nitrification were greater in the upper layer soil than in the lower 15-30 cm layer soil.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the biodegradability of the micro-contaminant, clindamycin antibiotic, under nitrifying activated sludge (AS) condition. Based on the short-term clindamycin degradation batch test at an environmentally relevant concentration (10 ppb), clindamycin disappearance half-life ($t_{0.5}$) was estimated to be 9.1hrs under nitrification condition. However, biodegradation was slower (26.1 hrs) when nitrification was inhibited. Also, one clindamycin metabolite was detected under nitrification condition, but not under inhibited nitrification condition. Based on the mass spectra, the metabolite is suspected to be clindamycin-sulfoxide (m/z 441), which is known to have antimicrobial activity. The metabolite was not degraded during the long term batch study, suggesting that under the conditions tested, biodegradation of clindamycin in activated sludge systems is ineffective.

  • The purpose of this study was to review application of ASTM C 1260 for cement matrix with flyash and lithium nitrate using reactive aggregate. The experimental program included the accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT: ASTM C 1260) for the slate which was evaluated as reactive aggregate by ASTM C 1260 at the previous study. The cement, which was substituted by 10, 20, 30% flyash containing less than 10% CaO, could control ASR expansion. From the experiment applying lithium nitrate to control ASR, the mortar bar containing lithium nitrate showed more than 0.1% expansion at 14 days. This is probably due to dissolution of lithium nitrate in NaOH solution during test periods. Thus, it is necessary to adopt another test method to verify the control effect of lithium nitrate against alkali-silica reaction.

  • This study investigated the thermodynamic and the thermal decomposition properties of high concentration nitrate salts waste water for the lagoon sludge treatment. The thermodynamic property was carried out by COACH and GEMINI II based on the composition of nitrate Salts waste water. The thermal decomposition property was carried out by TG-DTA and XRD. Ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate were decomposed at $250^{\circ}C$$730^{\circ}C$$450^{\circ}C$$Na_2O$ into stable $Na_2O$.$Al_2O_3$. The flow sheet for nitrate salts waste water treatment was proposed based on the these properties data. These will be used by the basic data of the process simulation.

  • As common pollutants in surface and groundwater, nitrate nitrogen($NO_3-N$) and trichloroethylene(TCE) can be chemically and biologically reduced by zero valent iron(ZVI) and peat soil. In batch microcosm experiments, chemical reduction of TCE and nitrate was supported by hydrogen from ZVI. For biological degradation of TCE and denitrification peat soil was introduced. ZVI reduced TCE, while peat provided TCE sorption site and microbes performing biological degradation. Nitrate reduction was also achieved by hydrogen from ZVI. In addition, indirect evidence of denitrification was observed. More reduction of TCE and nitrate was achieved by ZVI+peat treatment however nitrated reduction was hindered in the presence of TCE in the system due to the competition for hydrogen. TCE reduction mechanism was more dependent on ZVI, while nitrate was peat-dependent. Hydrogen and methane concentration showed that peat had various anaerobic denitryfing and halorespiring bacteria.

  • Leaching of copper and silver from mobile phone PCBs(printed circuit boards) with nitric acid was performed to investigate the effects of nitric acid concentrations, leaching temperatures, agitation speeds, and pulp densities on the leaching behaviors of Cu and Ag. The leaching rate considerably increased with increasing acid concentration and temperature. The leaching ratios of Cu and Ag were found to be 96.4% and 96.5%, respectively, under the optimum condition; at $80^{\circ}C$ with 2mol/L $HNO_3$ and 120g/L in pulp density within 39minutes. The kinetic parameters were determined based on the shrinking core model with reaction control corresponding to small particles. The activation energies for the leaching of copper and silver were found to be 45.5kJ/mol and 60.5kJ/mol at $35{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ with 2mol/L $HNO_3$, respectively.
