  • Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal-dominant disorder. Vasculopathies associated with NF1 are rare and can cause aneurysms, stenoses, and arteriovenous malformations. Aneurysms may rupture spontaneously, which could be fatal. Spontaneous mesenteric hemorrhage due to rupture of an inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm associated with NF1 has rarely been reported. Herein, we report a case of spontaneous rupture of a fusiform aneurysm in the superior rectal artery in a 56-year-old woman with NF1 who was successfully treated with transcatheter arterial embolization.

  • This study analyzed the factors having an influence on married woman's childbirth abandonment based on the 2011 materials (the 4th year) of PSKC (Panel Study on Korean Children), KICCE (Korea Institute of Child Care and Education). The analysis showed a few results. First, 'educational expenses for children' and 'physical hardship' were the factors having a major influence on the abandonment of another childbirth. Second, there was some difference in the reason for the abandonment of another childbirth according to the current number of children. That is, women with one child gave up another childbirth because of 'hardship to juggle child-care and work', while women with two children showed 'child-care costs' as a more important reason for the abandonment of childbirth. Third, 'age' and 'instrumental value of children' also had an influence on the abandonment of childbirth. Fourth, there was some difference in the factors having an influence on childbirth abandonment according to the current number of children. The research found that the community child-care environment such as 'leisure and cultural facilities' influenced the women with one child, and maternal psychological factor such as 'marital conflicts' influenced the women with two children in their abandonment of another childbirth.

  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or second hand smoke or passive smoking has become a well-known risk factor for various health hazards in nonsmoking adults as well as active smokers. In Korea, there have been few studies concerning about the impact of ETS on periodontal health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to passive smoking and prevalence of periodontitis using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in 2008 and 2009. The Fourth KNHANES data was employed from 2008~2009. The final sample size was 4,669 adults aged over 18 years, who were never-smoker and had the information about ETS both at home and in the workplace, urine analysis and periodontal examination by Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Periodontitis was defined as CPI codes ${\geq}3$. Data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0. The sociodemographic and behavioral factors were adjusted as confounders. Overall, 17.1% (male 16.4%, female 83.6%) of the participants were exposed to ETS. The mean concentration of cotinine in those exposed ETS was significantly higher than that in unexposed people ($46.92{\mu}g/ml$ versus $19.34{\mu}g/ml$, p<0.001). Participants exposed to ETS were more likely to have periodontitis than those unexposed after adjusting for potential confounding variables. ETS is associated with the prevalence of periodontitis in Korean adults. This may suggest that patients with periodontitis or periodontal surgery should be protected from smokers or smoking places.

Fourth, Although the level of economical preparation depends on their wealth, the occupation and activity characteristics had no effect on the economical preparation. These findings imply that the retirement preparation as a recent social issue has been influenced by the nature of occupation and activity and suggest that the definite policy and program will be required for the retirement preparation of the middle-aged people from various aspects.

  • The present study examined the content and changes in leader role schemas associated with 'male' leaders, 'female' leaders, and 'good' leaders over the past 10 years in Korea. In addition, we analyzed how the gender of the respondents affects their perception of male leaders versus female leaders as a good leader. A total of 736 Korean adults residing in the Seoul metropolitan area participated in the survey at two different time points, one in 2007, and the other in 2017. The respondents were presented with a total of 90 behavior items driven from the literature and asked to choose the items that represent male leaders, female leaders, and good leaders, respectively. We found that the chosen behavior items for male leaders versus female leaders matched closely to the typical sex role of males (i.e., being agentic) versus females (i.e., being communal). By contrast, the chosen behavior items for good leaders reflected both the male-typed roles and the female-typed roles. We also found that the role schemas associated with male leaders as well as good leaders have changed over the 10 year period. Those schemas also differed between male versus female respondents. For female leaders, however, the role schemas were found to be stable over the 10 years. We also found that the good leader schemas are more specified and variable than are the male or the female schemas. Additionally, in the 2007 survey male characteristics overlapped with good leader characteristics to a greater degree than did female characteristics. This difference was no longer observed in the 2017 survey. The observed difference in the degree of overlap between male (versus female) characteristics with good leader characteristics was attributable to the perceptions of male respondents. We discuss implications of our findings and directions for future research.

  • This study is to examine current child care support policies and their limitations and to make some suggestions by means of statistics and previous literature. Major findings are as follows: First, As the women have younger children, the effect is more negative. Second, a maternity leave of Korea is 90 days, which is below ILO standard. Moreover, it is not well supported by the companies they work for. Third, the increasing number of men has spent a paternity leave since the pertinent law was enforced in 2001. The rate of spending the leave, however, is not as high as expected, because it has not yet been decided whether the leave would be paid or not. Lastly, the number of the employer-supporting child care center is rather few due to the legal standard of the facility and the expense that a company should cover. Only 46.5% of the companies that has been appointed to obligatorily establish the center now operate the facility. Therefore, child care support policies should be reformed or improved to help reduce married women's child care burden obviously hindering women from being employed, and this will consequently promote their economic activities. It is also urgently required to expand the application of the parental leave in terms of both object and scope. It is important that employers and employees get ready to compromise each other on the wage issue during the leave. In addition, the flexibility in period and form of the parental leave and the connection of working places with local community for better child care service must be taken into consideration.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of work-family balance on job satisfaction and the mediating effect of family supportive organizational culture in the relationship. For this purpose, the 6th data of the Women's Family Panel was used to analyze 2,016 married female workers who are currently employed among respondents aged 19 to 64. According to the analysis, First, work-family balance was found to have a positive effect on job satisfaction, and second, family supportive organizational culture had a mediating effect between work-family balance and job satisfaction. These results are meaningful in that they reaffirmed the emotional connection between work and family areas, suggesting that not only an institutional approach for work-family balance but also a cultural approach such as family-supportive organizational culture need to be considered.

  • Purpose: This study was based on social-role theory, and purposes were to investigate (1) how depression and health determinants vary with married and employed women, and (2) what factors contribute to depression according to family cycle. Methods: A stratified convenience sample of 765 married and employed women was recruited during May to August 2010. Study variables of depression, socio-demographic threatening factors, psycho-stimulating factors, and social-role related factors were measured via a structured questionnaire. Results: Prevalence rate for depression was 18.6%, with highest rate (25.4%) from elementary laborers. Greater levels of depression were related to women's occupation, higher life stress, and poorer health; lower social support and vulnerable personality; higher levels of social-role related stress. From multivariate analysis, women with preadolescents were the most vulnerable to depression affected by occupation, life stress, personality, and parenting stress. These factors (except for occupational class) combined with economic status, social support, and housework unfairness were significant for depression in women with adolescents. Conclusion: Depression among married and employed women differs by psycho-stimulating and social role relevant factors in addition to occupational class and family life cycle. Female elementary laborers and women with children need to have the highest prioritization for community mental health programs.
