  • Objectives : Since the awareness of autism spectrum disorders(ASD) is growing, as a result, it is increasing numbers of infants and toddlers being referred to specialized clinics for a differential diagnosis and the importance of early autism spectrum disorders detection is emphasized. This study is to know the difference between ASD and intellectual disability(ID) from comparison of the demographics, clinical characters and obstetric complications. Methods : The participants are 816 toddlers who visited the developmental delay clinic(DDC) in National Health Insurance Ilsan hospital. The number of toddlers diagnosed as ASD and ID was 324 and 492. 75 toddlers out of 114 who returned to DDC were diagnosed as ID at the first visit but 7 of them had changed diagnosis to ASD at the second visit. After compared ASD with ID from the first visit, we analyzed characters of toddlers who had the changed diagnosis to ASD at the second visit. Results : As a result, the comparison between ASD and ID at the first visit shows that the boys have higher ratio, lower obstetric complication and lower language assessment score in ASD. The toddlers who had the changed diagnosis at the second visit were all boys and they had more cases of family history of developmental delay and had lower score of receptive language developmental quotient. Conclusions : These findings suggest that sex, language characteristics and obstetric complication could be useful in the early detection of ASD.

  • The purpose of this study is to inquire into the theoretical background of music therapy interventions for the improvement of mathematical concepts among young children with special needs. The researcher provides a basis of theoretical background about musical activities as an effective tool for young children to understand and promote their mathematical concepts, and the necessity of practical application in the field of mathematics education is suggested. Music, as a multi-sensory modality, has an ability to hold and maintain one's attention, and can be used as a memory aid and a powerful and effective motivator and reinforcer for young children. Therefore, musical activities can be used to facilitate mathematical concepts in the field of education for young children. Possible musical activities for promoting mathematical development are suggested, and the necessity for developing various musical activities is discussed.

The subjects of the study were four students with developmental disabilities at special schools. We extracted the social activities necessary for social life through analyzing the level and characteristics of the students and the living environment of the residential centered community of the students. We analyzed the types of smart phone applications that could support this social activity, and selected applications that are appropriate for the type of application and are currently being developed. We applied the application to the students with developmental disabilities by applying them to the social activities for 4 months. Research shows that smart phone application types require different types of applications in areas such as communication, mobility, safety, and activity support. The results of this study are as follows: smart phone desktop function with sensible simple form, function to be selectively used for communication, mobile support function with various voice and markers, safety support function to inform the current position and situation Etc. should be added to the present function.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program on the visual attention and stereotypical behavior of an adolescent with intellectual disability. The subject was an adolescent with intellectual disability attending a special school located in B-gun, A-province of South Korea, with whom an A-B-A' design individual target study was conducted between August 27 and December 12, 2018. The intervention consisted of twelve 40-minute sessions, which were provided twice a week. For every session, two types of evaluation were conducted: a test that required staring at objects for visual attention, as well as an observation record for identifying the frequency and duration of stereotypical behavior. The results of this study showed that the tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program had positive effects on the duration of the participant's ability to stare at objects and the frequency and duration of stereotypical behavior. As this study confirmed and usefulness of this tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program as an intervention for improving the visual attention, and stereotypical behavior of adolescent with intellectual disabilities, the program may be employed to help members of this groups who have problems with sensory processing.

  • Recently, many cognitive training programs based on digital contents have been presented, but few digital contents have been produced for children with intellectual disabilities among children with developmental disabilities. Digital contents based training programs are needed to apply remotely untact training programs rather than face-to-face apprenticeship classes for improving the cognition of children with intellectual disabilities. This study was attempted to present the new cognitive training program by analyzing concurrent validity, which was analyzed by the correlation between items by comparing with subtests of K-WISC-IV and items of game based Neuro-World cognitive training program. It was found that there are some validity by analyzing correlation between the subtests of K-WISC-IV and the items of Neuro-World program, which means that it has concurrent validity of some items of Neuro-World program. In terms of reliability, the Cronbach alpha value was 0.794, indicating that game performance of children with intellectual disabilities and the degree of level increase in each game were somewhat reliable. This is considered to be a significant result in future studies for clinical trials of cognitive training tools.

  • This study aims to provide base data and suggestions to develop a system which considers both improvement of personal competency and national and societal dimensions for employment of people with developmental disabilities. The raw data of '1st Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled from 2nd wave' was analyzed by cross analysis and logistic regression in order to examine factors which have potential to affect employment of people with developmental disabilities. The results are as follows: 'Gender', 'Level of education', health status', 'communication skills', 'possess a license or certification', 'actual skills and qualification of area of expertise', 'family support level for employment', 'satisfaction level of daily life', 'job hunting through public agency' and 'job hunting through acquaintance' showed positive effect on employment of developmental disabilities population. On the other hand, 'need level of assistance in daily life' and 'national basic livelihood security' showed negative effect on employment of developmental disabilities population. The improvement of personal competency should be focus on the lacking skills such as communication skills and health. In addition, educational and occupational support need to be diversified. A need of solution for low-income issue and modification of national basic livelihood security policy was suggested to increase motivation to do job-hunting and maintenance of employment.
