  • In this paper, the characteristics and load carrying capacity of square pocket surfaces on a slider bearing are discussed for the thin film effect by the square pocket slider bearing. To study the lubrication, a Reynolds equation is used in this paper for the analysis of the slider bearing characteristics with square pocket surfaces. For numerical analysis, the central differencing scheme finite difference method is used. In a slider bearing with square pocket surfaces, the simulation dependent parameters such as pressure and load carrying capacity of the bearing can be acquired from the independent parameters, the slope of the slider bearing and number of pockets on the upper slider. These results can be acquired by the programmed softwar,e and they can be analyzed and stored in a sequential data file for later analysis. Furthermore, their pressure and load capacity distribution can be displayed easily by using the developed program with the Matlab GUI.

  • To detect and evaluate the damage present in bridge, static identification method is known to be simple and effective, compared to dynamic method. In this study, the damage detection method in steel box girder bridge using static responses including displacement, slope and curvature is examined. The static displacement is calculated using finite element analysis and the slope and curvature are determined from the displacement using central difference method. The location of damage is detected using the absolute differences of these responses in intact and damaged bridge. Steel box girder bridge with corner crack is modeled using singular element in finite element method. The results show that these responses were significantly useful in detecting and predicting the location of damage present in bridge.

  • In this paper, a numerical comparison of predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and 3D analysis is presented for slope/pile system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit finite difference code, FLAC 3D. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a file reinforced slope according to shear strength reduction technique. The case of coupled analyses was performed for stabilizing piles in slope in which the pile response and slope stability are considered simultaneously. In this study, by using these methods, the failure surfaces and factors of safety were compared and analyzed in several cases, such as toe, middle and top of the slope, respectively. Furthermore, the coupled method based on shear strength reduction technique was verified by the comparison with other analysis results.

  • An enhanced four-node plate element, which has been developed for explicit dynamic analysis of plate, is described in this paper. Reissner-Mind1in(RM) assumptions are adopted to consider transverse shear deformation effects in the present plate element. RM plate element produces a shear locking phenomena in thin plate so that the substitute natural strains based on assumed strain method are explicitly derived. The present plate element is applied into the explicit transient algorithm and the mass matrix of plate is formulated by using special lumping method proposed by Hinton et al. The performance of the element is verified with numerical examples.

  • A two-dimensional stream tube dispersion model is developed to simulate accurately transverse dispersion processes of pollutants in natural channels. Two distinct features of the stream tube dispersion model derived herein are that it employs the transverse cumulative discharge as an independent variable replacing the transverse distance and that it is developed in a natural coordinate system which follows the general direction of the channel flow. In the model studied, Eulerian-Lagrangian method is used to solve the stream tube dispersion equation. The stream tube dispersion equation is decoupled into two components by the operator-splitting approach; one is governing advection and the other is governing dispersion. The advection equation has been solved using the method of characteristics and the results are interpolated onto Eulerian grid on which the dispersion equation is solved by centered difference method. In solving the advection equation, cubic spline interpolating polynomials is used. In the present study, the results of the application of this model to a natural channel are compared with a steady-state flow measurements. Simulation results are in good accordance with measured data.

  • In this study, the adjustment processes of the disturbed channels by sand or gravel mining were investigated by a two dimensional numerical model in the generalized coordinate system. As a numerical scheme, the CIP (cubic interpolated pseudoparticle method) method was used to calculate the advection term in the flow field and central difference method was used to the diffusion term in it. The pit of the channel was partially filled with sediment at the toe of the pit upstream. As time increased, the headcut erosion upstream in the pit was decreased due to the sediment inflow. The almost inflow sediment upstream was trapped into the pit and the sediment deposit wedge migrated downstream in the pit with the steep submerged angle of repose. The numerical model was reproduced well the evolution processes of the channel. The mining pit migrated with speed as the channel was steep, and the numerical results were in overall agreement with the experimental results.

  • A new routing computer model for the symmetric compound channel called the ASFMCS (Apparent Shear Force Muskingum-Cung Method in Symmetry) is developed. The Muskingum-Cunge routing method is adapted. The Apparent Shear Force(ASF) between the deep main channel and shallow floodplain flow is introduced while the flow is routed. The nonlinear parameter method is applied. The temporal and spatial increments are varied according to the flow rate. The adaptation of above schemes is tested against the routed hydrographs using the DAMBRK model. The results of general routing practice of Muskingum-Cunge Method (GFMC) are also compared with those of the above two models. The results of the new model match remarkably well with those of DAMBRK. The routed hydrographs show smooth variation from the inflow boundary condition without any distortions caused by the difference of cross-section shape. However, the results of GPMC, showing earlier rising and falling of routed hydrograph, have considerable differences from those of the ASFMCS and DAMBRK.

  • This paper describes a comparative study of genetic algorithm and mathematical programming technique applied in the design optimization of geodesic dome. In particular, the genetic algorithm adopted in this study uses the so-called re-birthing technique together with the standard GA operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation to accelerate the searching process. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity required in mathematical programming techniques and three different techniques such as sequential linear programming (SLP), sequential quadratic programming(SQP) and modified feasible direction method(MFDM) are consistently used in the design optimization of geodesic dome. The optimum member sizes of geodesic dome against several external loads is evaluated by the codes $ISADO-GA{\alpha}$ and ISADO-OPT. From a numerical example, we found that both optimization techniques such as GA and mathematical programming technique are very effective to calculate the optimum member sizes of three dimensional discrete structures and it can provide a very useful information on the existing structural system and it also has a great potential to produce new structural system for large spatial structures.

  • This paper examines the vertical stress change concentrated on mine pillar which occurs due to the stress disturbance from opening excavation at room and pillar mine by FLAC3D, a finite difference method (FDM) software. The mesh size combination is decided with a careful consideration of relative error and run-time, then its performance is verified. A series of numerical analyses is conducted and the vertical stress at central pillar was observed for the test cases of 1×1 to 11×11 mine pillars, 40 m to 320 m depth with 40 m difference. The results show that the vertical stress of pillar approaches to the similar value with the value estimated by tributary area theory(TAT) when the development area (NP) is increased or the height of overburden (HOB) is decreased, while it is overestimated in the opposite case. Furthermore, it also represents that the vertical stress factor (VSF) converges to a specific value when the depth is increased whille keeping the development area identical.

  • The purpose of this study is to econometrically analyze the negative impact of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the Gwangju/Jeonnam regionional economy using the Synthetic Control Method (SCM). The SCM SCM is a methodology similar to the difference-in-difference(DID) method of microeconometrics. It is applied to macroeconomic variables such as country, region, etc. to estimate the causal relationship between specific events and the dependent variable. In this study, as of 1980, local tax revenue data of metropolitan local governments were used as a proxy variable for the economy of the region, and the impact of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the economy of Gwangju/Jeonnam region was analyzed through various socio-economic indicators. In this study, data were used to analyze from 1971 to 2000, and as a result of empirical analysis, local tax revenues in Gwangju/Jeonnam area were less collected than normal routes up to 17%. In addition, the significance of this analysis was confirmed through in-time placebo effect analysis and in-space placebo effect analysis, which are methods of analyzing the robustness of the control group synthesis method.
