Effects of Middle-aged Marital Conflicts on Dyadic Adjustment -Mediating Effects of Positive Emotion and Sex-role Attitude- (중년기 부부갈등이 부부적응에 미치는 영향 -긍정감정과 성역할태도의 매개효과-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of marital conflicts on dyadic adjustment and the mediating effects of positive emotion and sex-role attitude. The participants were total 270 middle-aged married people and data was collected from April 12 to June 24 in 2014. The data was collected with structured questionnaire and analyzed with the SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. Results were as follows. First, marital conflicts had a significant direct effect and indirect effect through the mediation of positive emotion on dyadic adjustment. Second, positive emotion had a significant mediating effect but sex-role attitude did not. Third, The modified model showed a good fitness indices( ${\chi}^2$=38.90 standardized ${\chi}^2$=1.77(CMIN/df), GFI=.97, AGFI=.94, NFI=.98, SRMR=.02, CFI=.99, RMSEA=.05) and explanation power was 88.9%. These results suggest that middle-aged dyadic adjustment can be improved by increasing positive emotion. This study results will be contribute to develop intervention program for enhancement of marital relationship and education program for middle-aged.

Relationship between Communication Efficiency and Marital Satisfaction of Middle-Aged Couples -Mediation Effect of Self-Esteems- (중년기 부부의 의사소통 효율성과 결혼만족도와의 관계 -자아존중감의 매개효과-)

  • This study attempted to understand how the communication efficiency of middle-aged couples affects marriage satisfaction and to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem. To this end, the results of analyzing the influence relationship between the variables by collecting questionnaire data on the variables of 421 middle-aged couples living in D city are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the communication efficiency, self-esteem, and marriage satisfaction of middle-aged couples had a positive relationship. Second, the partial mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between marriage satisfaction was verified by the communication efficiency of middle-aged couples. Based on these research results, an action plan to improve marriage satisfaction in the middle-aged part was suggested.

A Influence Effect of Mid-life Religious Life and Faith Maturity on the Couples' Life Satisfaction (중년기 종교 활동과 신앙성숙도가 부부생활만족도에 미치는 영향분석연구)

  • The study has found that the main reasons affecting to the mature conjugal relations of middle-aged persons are closely related with sede factors brought about after marriage. Comparatively the factors before marriage have more or less weak power on the conjugal relations. They are mature relations wp between husbands and wives, stable and enough incede, and religious activities, which have deep relations with the satisfactory conjugal relations. C. G. Jung divided the whole life span as self-assuredness period in the first half and self-convergence period in the second half. The first is the period when one does his or her best to get external and physical self. On the contrary, the second is the middle-aged period one finds his or her meaning of life in the religious, philosophical, intuitional, and spiritual world, which lead life into harmony and integration. Therefore if one overcomes some psychological crisis related with middle-aged development he or she can enjoy happy senescence(old age). The study has suggested through literature investigation the definition of middle age and the developmental traits of middle age, and the relations between religions and conjugal relations of middle-aged husbands and wives. Futhermore, it has analyzed the theories which religions have close relations with the life satisfaction of middle-aged conjugal relations. In order to give an analysis the influence of the variable of religious activities and religious maturity, with the degree of conjugal satisfaction, 400 middle age are selected as the object of the study whose ages are ranging from 35 years to 60 years, and who reside in Seoul or near Seoul. They were asked to fill out the questionnaires asking about religious activities, religious maturity, and the conjugal satisfaction from March 25th to April 30th, 2009. The results of the survey have been statistically processed and analyzed. First, the higher religious maturity gives positive influence on the general religious activities including public service, human relations, and spiritual stability. That is, this result indicates that the individual, spiritual, and formal religious activities give to a degree influence on the religious maturity. Second, the maturity of religious life resulting from religious activities has a causation with the satisfaction of conjugal life. In more details, religious activities has a positive influence on the satisfaction of conjugal life(T=31.36, p<.001) In more details, religious activities has a positive influence on the religious maturity(T=31.36, p<.001), and religious activities has a positive influence on the satisfaction of conjugal life(T=33.81, p<.001), and the religious maturity has a positive influence on the satisfaction of conjugal life(T=28.64, p<.001) Third, as we analyze the main effects which religious activities and the religious maturity could give influence on the satisfaction of conjugal life, it is found that both religious activities(F=15.95, p<.001) and the religious maturity(F=23.94, p<.001) give a positive influence on the satisfaction of conjugal life. In conclusion, it is sure that religious activities and the religious maturity have a close relations with the satisfaction of conjugal life. Therefore it can be said that religious activities at the protestant religion, buddhism, and catholic religion can give an important influence on the satisfaction of middle-aged conjugal life.

  • This paper was to investigate the effects of conjugal power and gender role attitudes on marital satisfaction of middle-aged couples. This survey was conducted from April, 2011 to May, 2011 and 265 responses from the survey were used for the analysis. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA pearson correlation and multiple regression. The research findings could be summarized as the followings. First, the mean scores of gender role attitude, conjugal power, marital satisfaction of the marital middle-aged couples were higher than averages. Second, gender role attitude and conjugal power were the significant predictors to explain marital satisfaction of marital middle-aged couples.

  • This study was designed to investigate the differences in the mediation effects of cognitive emotion-regulation in the relationships between family stress and marital satisfaction of middle-aged husbands and wives. The data were underwent through the SPSS 19. Win for frequency, paired-t-test, multiple regression analysis, and for the further analysis of hiearchical multiple regression and the analysis for the mediation effect proposed by Baron & Kenny(1996) and Sobel test(Sobel, 1982). The results were as follows. First, hiearchical multiple regression analysis showed that education level, couples' problems, replanning strategies were proved to be significant for the marital satisfaction of the husbands, while age, couples' problems, acceptance strategies were significant for the marital satisfaction of the wives. Second, cognitive emotion-regulation strategies were proved to partially mediate in the relationship between family stress and marital satisfaction. The limitations of the study and implications for the further research were discussed based on the results.

A Study on the Effectiveness and Composition of a Marriage-Enrichment Program for Middle-Aged Couples (은퇴 전.후 중년기 부부관계강화를 위한 프로그램 개발 및 효과성 검증에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to enhance the marital relationships of middle-aged couples in their 50s who either had retired or were approaching retirement and to develop marriage-enrichment program that would help them maintain a happy and satisfactory family relationship. In-depth interviews were conducted with middle-aged couples in their 50s who had enrolled in the program. Developed based on the relevant literature and our own needs analyses the program was organized into three areas, family relationship, life management(time, leisure), and life plan for old ages. The program consisted of five sessions of 120 minutes each. Participants attended the program's lectures and activities. Pre and post-tests were conducted to examine the program's effectiveness. The post-test results showed improvement over the pre-test results, so we can conclude that this program would appropriate for improving the marital relationships of middle- aged couples in their 50s both before or after their retirement.

The Effects of Marital Communication and Marital Intimacy on Psychological Well-being among Middle-aged Married Men and Women (중년기 기혼남녀의 부부의사소통과 부부친밀감이 심리적 복지에 미치는 영향)

  • This study provides basic materials that assist in marital counselling and marital therapy intervention through its analysis of the effects of marital communication and marital intimacy on psychological well-being and its systematic focus on middle-aged married men and women of social interest and importance. The subjects of this study were married men and women, aged 40 to 59, living in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Kyeonggi; the study excluded those who were divorced, bereaved or whose last child was in over high school, but included those who were separated or in a second marriage. A total of 396 people, 134 men and 262 women, were included in the study. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, middle-aged married men recorded higher levels of marital communication and marital intimacy than middle-aged married women. While women showed higher levels of depression than men, there was no difference between men and women in terms of overall life satisfaction. Second, there were differences in marital communication, marital intimacy, and psychological well-being among middle-aged married men and women according to background variables. Third, marital communication and marital intimacy were shown to affect the life satisfaction of both middle-aged married men and women. Of the two, marital communication had more the influence. Marital communication also had the biggest influence on levels of depression among both middle-aged married men and women.

The Relationships of the Middle-aged Men and Women's Gender-role Identity, Marital Conflict, and Psychological Adjustment (중년기 남녀의 성역할 정체감과 부부갈등 및 심리적 적응의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of married middle-aged men and women's gender-role identity, marital conflicts and psychological adjustment. Psychological adjustment was composed of mid life crisis, depression, and perceived happiness. The data of the study were collected from 397 married, middle aged men and women from 40 years to 59 years-old by using self-administered questionnaire method. The results showed that gender role identity was different according to sex. In addition, women's perceived level of marital conflict was found to be significantly different according to their gender role identity, indicating that androgynous women reported the lowest level of marital conflict. However, men's gender role conflict was not related to their marital conflict. Furthermore, men's psychological adjustment level was not different according to their gender role identity, while women's psychological adjustment differed, indicating that androgynous women reported the lowest level of psychological adjustment and the undifferentiated women the highest level of psychological adjustment. Finally, the result indicated that for both men and men, marital conflict were positively correlated with mid-crisis and depression, and negatively related with happiness.
