  • Analysis problems of tunnels whose geometrical dimensions are very small compared with surrounding media can be treated as infinite region problems. In such cases, even if finite element models can be applied, excessive number of elements is required to obtain satisfactory accuracy. However, inaccurate results may be produced due to assumed artificial boundary conditions. To solve these problems, a hybrid model, which models the region of interest with finite elements and the surrounding infinite media with infinite elements, is introduced for the analysis of infinite region. Three-dimensional isoparametric infinite elements with various decay characteristics are formulated in this paper and the corresponding parameters are presented by means of parametric studies. Three-dimensional tunnel analysis performed on a representative example verifies the applicability of hybrid model using infinite elements.

  • This paper presents a two dimensional p-version static infinite element for analyzing $1/r^n$ displacement decay type problems in unbounded media. The proposed element is developed by using shape functions based on approximate expressions of an analytical solution. Numerical results are presented for an opening in a homogeneous elastic infinite medium and a rigid footing rested on a homogeneous elastic half-space. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed infinite element.

  • Infinitesimal did not play an explicit role concerning definite integral in the textbook nowadays. But studies which investigate understanding of students on definite integral show that many students comprehend definite integral with infinitesimal. Formally infinitesimal is not taught at mathematics classroom, but many students identify definite integral as infinite sum of infinitesimals. This means that definite integral itself contains some structural elements that allow infinitesimal interpretation. In this study we investigate the role of infinitesimal In the historical development of partition-sum in definite integral, extract didactical issues concerning understanding of definite integral, and analyse Korean mathematics textbooks. Finally we propose some suggestions on the teaching of definite integral which contains the process of refinement intuition.

  • Understanding the concept of definite integral is based on understanding the concept of mensuration by parts. However, several previous studies pointed out the difficulty on teaching the concept of mensuration by parts. The paper provides some didactic strategies which help teaching the concept of mensuration by part. To teach the concept of definite integral, in the high school curriculum, the relation between definite integral and series is dealt with. However, the paper suggests that importing the concept of series is not indispensable to teach the concept of definite integral. It is proper that definite integral is taught as limit of particular sequence not series.

  • A recently developed numerical method based on a volume integral formulation is applied to calculate the accurate stress intensity factors at the crack tips in unbounded isotropic solids in the presence of multiple anisotropic inclusions and cracks subject to external loads. In this paper, a detailed analysis of the stress intensity factors are carried out for an unbounded isotropic matrix containing an orthotropic cylindrical inclusion and a crack. The accuracy and effectiveness of the new method are examined through comparison with results obtained from analytical method and finite element method using ANSYS. It is demonstrated that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing anisotropic inclusions and cracks.

  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for solving the elastostatic problems related to an unbounded isotropic elastic solid; this solid is subjected to remote uniaxial tension, and it contains multiple interacting isotropic inclusions. The method is applied to two-dimensional problems involving long parallel cylindrical inclusions. A detailed analysis of the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion is carried out; square and hexagonal packing of the inclusions are considered. The effects of the number of isotropic inclusions and different fiber volume fractions on the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion are also investigated in detail. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are clarified by comparing the results obtained by analytical and finite element methods. The VIEM is shown to be very accurate and effective for investigating the local stresses in composites containing isotropic fibers.

  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for the solution of elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic elastic solids containing multiple interacting isotropic or anisotropic diamond-shaped inclusions subject to remote uniaxial tension. The method is applied to two-dimensional problems involving long parallel diamond-shaped cylindrical inclusions. A detailed analysis of the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion is carried out for square and hexagonal packing of the inclusions. The effects of the number of isotropic or anisotropic diamond-shaped inclusions and of the various fiber volume fractions for the circular inclusions circumscribing its respective diamond-shaped inclusion on the stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion are also investigated in detail. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are examined through comparison with results obtained using the finite element method.

  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is introduced for the solution of elastostatic problems in an unbounded isotropic elastic solid containing multiple isotropic elliptical fibers of arbitrary orientation subject to uniform stress at infinity. The fibers are assumed to be long parallel elliptical cylinders composed of isotropic elastic material perfectly bonded to the isotropic matrix. The solid is assumed to be under plane strain on the plane normal to the cylinders. A detailed analysis of the stress field at the matrix-fiber interface for square and hexagonal packing of the fibers is carried out for different values of the number, orientation angles and concentration of the elliptical fibers. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are examined through comparison with results obtained from analytical and finite element methods.

  • This study examines the characteristics of soil behavior which includes many uncertainties in seismic design, evaluates the dynamic soil properties and studies the soil-structure interaction to generalize the applicability and economy of the available sites. An example analysis is performed for soil-structure system response assuming a containment structure built on site which includes soil layers using both elastic halfspace analysis and FEM analysis against the seismic loads from the actual design. This exercise is performed as a part of the safety analysis and economic assessment of the nuclear power plant built on soils. It includes the preparation of computer program capable of incorporating large nonlinearity in the analysis, resonable evaluation procedures to determine input soil data. Nonlinear FEM analysis of Seed and Idriss model is found suitable for the accurate analysis of dynamic response of soils. Linear FEM analysis using dynamic soil properties at strain level obtained by one-dimensional seismic response, and elastic half-space analysis using dynamic soil properties at strain level under static loads are recommended to evaluate the dynamic soil properties.
