  • Secondary flow losses can be as high as 30~50% of the total aerodynamic losses for a turbo-machinery blade or stator row. These are important part for improving a turbine efficiency. Therefore, many studies have been performed to decrease the secondary flow losses. The present study deals with the chamfered leading-edge at a generic wing-body junction to decrease the horseshoe vortex, one of factors to generate the secondary flow losses, and investigates the vortex generation and the characteristics of the horseshoe vortex with the chamfered height, and depth of the chamfer by using $FLUENT^{TM}$. It was found that the total pressure loss for the best case can be decreased about 1.55% compare to the baseline case.

  • A previous stud-pull test was modified to measure the bond strength of polyurethane foam to carbon steel substrate. This test was appropriate in that the specimen foamed on Zn phosphated steel (0.95 kN) was broken at higher load than that of smooth galvanizing treated steel (0.38 kN). Among the samples foamed on the substrate atvarious preheating temperatures, the polyurethane foam to the steel held over 60$^{\circ}C$ exhibited very high bond strength. The samples were exposed at water vapor absorption, and, then, their bond strengths were measured. The adhesion was significantly reduced in the samples foamed on the steel at temperatures below 40$^{\circ}C$ and above 70$^{\circ}C$. For the polyurethane foams formulated with two blowing gases, the adhesion was higher by 0.03 kN in the samples with HCFC-l4lb than that with HFC-245fa. When the these samples were exposed at water vapor soaking, the reduction of the bond strength for the HFC-245fa blown sample was negligible due to smaller area fraction of void area filled with gas at interfacial area. Consequently, it was found that adhesion of polyurethane foam to metal substrate was determined by variation of microstructural features with substrate preheating, surface treatment type of blowing agent.

  • A general earthquake resistant design philosophy of ductile frame buildings allows beams to form plastic hinges adjacent to beam-column connections. In order to carry out this design philosophy, the ultimate bond or shear strength of the beam should be greater than the flexural yielding force and should not degrade before reaching its required ductility. The behavior of RC members dominated by bond or shear action reveals a dramatic reduction of energy dissipation in the hysteretic response due to the severe pinching effects. In this study, a method was proposed to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete members with short-span-to-depth-ratios, which would result in bond failure after flexural yielding. Repeated or cyclic loading produces a progressive deterioration of bond that may lead to failure at lower cyclic bond stress levels. Accumulation of bond damage is caused by the propagation of micro-cracks and progressive crushing of concrete in front of the lugs. The proposed method takes into account bond deterioration due to the degradation of concrete in the post yield range. In order to verify bond deformability of the proposed method, the predicted results were compared with the experimental results of RC members reported in the technical literature. Comparisons between the observed and calculated bond deformability of the tested RC members showed reasonably good agreement.

  • This study was conducted on greenhouses whose side heights had been raised after the columns of 1-2W basic type greenhouses had been cut and welding with the same-sized pipes. When the wind load or snow load affects restructured pipe greenhouse like this, those parts will be structurally unsafe. To examine this, the bending strength of welded columns were measured through four stages and compared with the pipes in their original condition. Results are as follows. In the case of a bending test on welded joints about steel pipes used for greenhouses, satisfactory results couldn't be drawn because sections of both ends and the loading parts couldn't endure loads and sank regardless of loading methods. Partial problems could be solved by inserting inside pipe(steel bar) at the sections and the loading parts, but it was necessary to devise more satisfactory bending test methods. The strength of welded joints wasn't much different compared with original conditions and demonstrated only slight differences according to the sample production conditions. However, significant incompleteness in the welding process was expected to cause a decisive loss in strength. On the assumption that there were no problems in the welding process or with regard to the inclination of sub materials for columns after connection, it was deemed reasonable to assume that the strength of welded pipes was about 84~90% of the strength of the pipes in their original condition. Considering mid- and long-term strength decline following the onset of rust at joints or welding sections, structural changes in the main sub materials that are used for greenhouses at farmhouses have to be avoided to ensure structural safety, unless these changes are inevitable.

  • This study was aimed to investigate whether an oxygen inhibition layer (OIL) is essential for the interfacial bonding between resin composite layers or not. A composite (Z-250, 3M ESPE) was filled in two layers using two aluminum plate molds with a hole of 3.7 mm diameter. The surface of first layer of cured composite was prepared by one of five methods as followings, thereafter second layer of composite was filled and cured: Group 1 - OIL is allowed to remain on the surface of cured composite; Group 2 - OIL was removed by rubbing with acetone-soaked cotton; Group 3 - formation of the OIL was inhibited using a Mylar strip; Group 4 - OIL was covered with glycerin and light-cured; Group 5 (control) - composite was bulk-filled in a layer. The interfacial shear bond strength between two layers was tested and the fracture modes were observed. To investigate the propagation of polymerization reaction from active area having a photo-initiator to inactive area without the initiator, a flowable composite (Aelite Flow) or an adhesive resin (Adhesive of ScotchBond Multipurpose) was placed over an experimental composite (Exp_Com) which does not include a photoinitiator and light-cured. After sectioning the specimen, the cured thickness of the Exp_Com was measured. The bond strength of group 2, 3 and 4 did not show statistically significant difference with group 1. Groups 3 and 4 were not statistically significant different with control group 5. The cured thicknesses of Exp_Com under the flowable resin and adhesive resin were 20.95 (0.90) urn and 42.13 (2.09), respectively.

  • This paper is an attempt to account for the uncertainty of the residual strength in the reliability analysis of structural systems. For this purpose the stochastic finite element method(SFEM) is linked to the system reliability analysis procedure. The stochastic finite element is known to be able to a more explicitly consider the effect of uncerainties of material and geometric variables on those of load effects in structural analysis procedure. The method has been applied to system as well as component reliability analysis of a plane structure. Comparison of the results by the present approach is made with the method in which the residual strength of failed component is treated as deterministic variable. Several case studies have been carried to show the effect of uncertainty in residual strength of a member after failure. Is has been conformed that reidual strength very much affect the system reliability level. It can be, hence, concluded that the uncertainties in the post-ultirnate behaviour may have to be taken into account in the system reliability analysis for a better a ssessment of the system reliability especially for a structure of which member behaviour is modelled as asemi-brittle model. And then the stochastic finite element method can efficiently evaluate the system reliability.

  • A new thin sandwich panel composed of an aluminum expanded metal core adhesively jointed with stainless steel face sheets is introduced, and its mechanical behavior under three-point bending is investigated. The strength and stiffness are analyzed theoretically, and the press-formability and strength enhancement are evaluated experimentally. The specimens with the specific configurations exhibit face yielding well before face-core separation, which means that the sandwich panel can be formed by a press without failure. The measured load levels corresponding to the face yielding and the face-core separation agree fairly well with the theoretical estimations. For a given weight, the sandwich panel is superior to a solid panel in terms of strength, stiffness, and press-formability.

  • Copper Pillar Tin Bump (CPTB) was investigated for high density chip interconnect technology development, which was prepared by electroplating and electro-less plating methods. Copper pillar tin bumps that have $100{\mu}m$ pitch were introduced with fabrication process using a KM-1250 dry film photoresist (DFR), with copper electroplating for Copper Pillar Bump (CPB) formation firstly, and then tin electro-less plating on it for control oxidation. Electric resistivity and mechanical shear strength measurements were introduced to characterize the oxidation effects and bonding process as a function of thermo-compression. Electrical resistivity increased with increasing oxidation thickness, and shear strength had maximum value with $330^{\circ}C$ and 500 N at thermo-compression process. Through the simulation work, it was proved that the CPTB decreased in its size of conduction area as time passes, however it was largely affected by the copper oxidation.

  • Butt-fusion welding process is used to join the polymeric pipes. Recently, some researchers suggest the curved surface to enhance a welding quality. We investigated how curved welding surface affects heat and flow behaviors of polymer melt during the process in 2D axisymmetric domain with finite element method, and discussed the effect to the welding quality. In this study, we considered HDPE pipes. In heat soak stage, curved phase interface between the melt and solid is shown along the shape of welding surface. In jointing stage, squeezing flow is generated between curved welding surface and phase interface. The low shear rate in fusion domain reduces the alignment of polymer to the perpendicular direction of pipes, and then this phenomenon is expected to help to enhance the welding quality.
