  • An explosion modeling technique was developed by using the spherical discrete element code, $PFC^{3D}$, which can be used to model the dynamic stress wave propagation phenomenon. The modeling technique is simply based on an idea that the explosion pressure should be applied to a $PFC^{3D}$ particle assembly not in the form of an external force (body force), but in the form of a contact force (surface force). The stress wave propagation modeling was conducted by simulating the experimental approach based on the Hopkinson's effect combined with the spatting phenomenon that had previously been developed to determine the dynamic tensile strength of Inada granite. As a result, the stress wave velocity obtained by the proposed modeling technique was 4167 m/s, which is merely $3\%$ lower than the actual wave velocity of 4300 m/s for an Inada granite.

  • We propose a novel contact-free transportation system in which an axial electrodynamic wheel is applied as an actuator. When the electrodynamic wheel is partially overlapped by a fixed conductive plate and rotates over it, three-axis magnetic forces are generated on the wheel. Among these forces, those in the gravitational direction and the lateral direction are inherently stable. Therefore, only the force in the longitudinal direction needs to be controlled to guarantee spatial stability of the wheel. The electrodynamic wheel consists of permanent magnets that are repeated and polarized periodically along the circumferential direction. The basic geometric configuration and the pole number of the wheel influence the stability margin of a transportation system, which would include several wheels. The overlap region between the wheel and the conductive plate is a dominant factor affecting the stiffness in the lateral direction. Therefore, sensitivity analysis for the major parameters of the wheel mechanism was performed using a finite element tool. The system was manufactured based on the obtained design values, and the passive stability of a moving object with the wheels was verified experimentally.

  • 1) The decrease in strength of netting twines at the knot may be regarded to be due mainly to the frictional force acting on the tip of the knot. The knot strength T may be given by $$T=\frac{T_0}{1+{\mu}\frac{s}{\rho}\varrho^{\mu\theta}$$ were $T_0$ is the tensile strength of unknotted netting twines, $\mu$ the coefficient of friction beween two netting twines forming a knot, s the contact length between the tip and the netting twine compressing it, $\rho$ the radius of curvature of the compressing, and $\theta$ the angle at which the compressing rubs with another one in the vicinity of the opposite tip. 2) Knots are arranged in order of strength as follows : the reef knot pulled lengthwise $\risingdotseq$ the trawler knot pulled breadtwise the reef knot pulled breadthwise.

  • Recently, according to the limelight of Fintech, simple payment using biometric at smartphone is widely used. In this paper, we propose a new contactless biometric method using thumb image without additional sensors unlike previous biometrics such as fingerprint, iris, and vein recognition. In our method, length, width, and skin texture information are used as features. For that, illumination normalization, skin region segmentation, size normalization and alignment procedures are sequentially performed from the captured thumb image. Then, correlation coefficient is calculated for similarity measurement. To analyze recognition accuracy, genuine and imposter matchings are performed. At result, we confirmed the FAR of 1.68% at the FRR of 1.55%. In here, because the distribution of imposter matching is almost normal distribution, our method has the advantage of low FAR. That is, because 0% FAR can be achieved at the FRR of 15%, the proposed method is enough to 1:1 matching for payment verification.

  • Mass transfer mechanism and concentration profiles in the axial direction at each phase were analyzed and simulated by a theoretical modeling on a liquid-liquid static contactor using highly packed fiber bundle. The concentrations at the end of the fiber extractor calculated at several operational conditions were compared with experimental results. The fiber extractor could be completely predicted by a plug flow model without axial dispersion. A parameter used in the model equations, $k_a{\sigma}$ called the product of mass transfer coefficient and mass transfer area per unit length of the fiber extractor in the axial direction, which was determined by a curve-fitting, was confirmed to be a unique characteristic value of the fiber extractor, and was about 0.0327cm2/sec.

  • Pipe structures contain many welded zones, and ultrasonic tests are increasingly being performed by using automated testing devices in order to evaluate the weld integrity. An electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is a noncontact transducer that can transmit or receive ultrasonic waves without a couplant. Furthermore, it can easily generate specific guided waves such as SH (shear horizontal) or Lamb waves by altering the design of the coil and magnet. Therefore, an EMAT should be useful for application to an automated ultrasonic inspection system. In this study, SH waves generated using an EMAT were applied to inspect the pipe-weld zone. To analyze the specific SH mode (SH0) from the SH wave signals, wavelet transform was applied. It was found that flaws could be detected precisely because the intensity of the $SH_0$ mode-frequency, which is analyzed by using wavelet transform, is proportional to the length of the flaw.

  • In this paper, the inductive power collector using electromagnetic induction for vehicle such as the electric railway vehicle system is suggested and some ideas for power collector design to improve the power transfer performance are presented. The inductive power of secondary part is related to amount of linked flux to secondary part by the length of air-gap, which is expected by such a system parameter as mutual inductance. This paper will study for the transfer characteristic of power from input to output and equation including mutual inductance.

  • Statements of problem: Adequate bone quality and quantity were important to achieve initial stability and to prevent early failures. However there were few published data available regarding the actual effect of dimensional change in implant geometry on initial stability. Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of diameter and length changes on initial stability of implants. Material and methods: Four types of dummy bone (D1, D2, D3 and D4) consisted of cortical and cancellous layers with different thickness were simulated. Implants which had similar surface area to each other ($3.5{\times}13.0-mm$, $4.0{\times}11.5-mm$, $4.5{\times}10.0-mm$, $5.0{\times}8.5-mm$) were inserted in dummy bones. Implant stability as a function of peak insertion torque and resonance frequency values were recorded for each implant. Results: 1. Bone quality was a major influential factor to achieve initial stability (P <.05). 2. In D1, D2 and D3 dummy bones, implant stability quotient values were not significantly different to each other (P >.05), however insertion torques were increased with wider and shorter implants (P <.05). 3. In D4 dummy bone, implant stability quotient values and insertion torques were decreased with wider and shorter implants (P <.05). Conclusion: From a point of view of initial stability, it is suggested that use of wide and short implant may be helpful in avoiding bone augmentation procedures in area of adequate bone quality.

  • What is an appropriate length of an article in the mobile era producing new tastes of contents combining computing and mobile communication? Is it still valid to have a lengthy article as high level journalism even in the mobile era? Is there any possibility to have a short article combination to give us readability and the amount of information? This study aims to find some answers to these questions. The length of articles were controlled with a field experiment; from an article of 346 syllables(including spaces between syllables) which does not need finger scrolling on a mobile phone to articles of 633, 1033, 1368 syllables(including spaces between syllables) which frequently appear in newspapers and broadcasting news program. All the main themes were same for 4 articles which have different length. Three hundred and eighty four students viewed one of the 4 articles through mobile phone or newspaper. Each participant checked their preference and evaluated quality on the article, were asked to recall contents of the article. In newspaper group, articles with 346 or 1033 syllables were highly evaluated. Mobile group seemed to prefer articles of 346 or 633 syllables. In conclusion, we need to consider various strategies shortening the length of an article into 346 or 633 syllables as a basic format to meet the neEds of mobile era.
