This study investigated the influences of applying the Cognitive Conflict Process Model (the Procedural Teaching Model using Cognitive Conflict Strategy: Kwon, 1989) upon students' achievement and attitudes in a middle school science concept instruction. For the treatment group, science instruction to apply the Cognitive Conflict Process Model was used. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. Prior to instruction, students' pre-conceptions test and attitudes test related to the science were administered. After instruction, the above two tests and the regular examinations were measured. Also students' perceptions of their teacher's new teaching style was investigated by questionnaire. But, above all, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the principal accompanying matters of general application of the teaching model to science concept instruction rather than conceptual and attitudinal change. Therefore, this study identified necessary conditions of applying the teaching model to science instruction.
The present study aims to investigate ways in which pre-service secondary mathematics teachers anticipate 1) students' responses to specific mathematical tasks which are chosen or devised by the participating pre-service teachers as requiring students' higher cognitive demand and, 2) their roles as math teachers to scaffold students' mathematical thinking. To achieve the goal, we had our pre-service teachers to engage in an adapted version of Spangler & Hallman-Thrasher(2014)'s Task Dialogue writing activity whose focus was to develop pre-service elementary teachers' ability to orchestrate mathematical discussion. 14 pre-service teachers who were junior at the time enrolled in the Mathematics Teaching Method Course were subjects of the current study. In-depth analysis of both Task Dialogues which pre-service secondary mathematics teachers wrote and audiotapes of the group discussions while they wrote the dialogues suggests the following results: First, the pre-service secondary teachers anticipated how students would approach a task based on their own teaching experiences. Second, they were challenged not only to anticipate more than one correct students' responses but to generate questions for the predicted correct-responses to bring forth students' divergent thinking. Finally, although they were aware that students' knowledge should be the crucial element guiding their decision-making process in teaching, they tended to lower the cognitive demands of tasks by providing students with too much guidance which brought forth the use of procedural knowledge. The study contributes to the field as it provides insights as to what to attend in designing teacher education course whose goal is to provide a foundation for developing pre-service teachers' ability to effectively orchestrate mathematical discussion.
The purpose of this study was to provide useful information for teachers by analyzing mathematical communication emphasized through 'exploratory activity' and 'story corner' in elementary textbooks based on the revised curriculum. Two classrooms from the first grade and second grade respectively were observed and videotaped. Mathematical communication of each classroom was analyzed in terms of questioning, explaining, and the sources of mathematical ideas. The results showed that only one classroom focused on students' thinking processes and explored their ideas, whereas the other classrooms focused mainly on finding answer. Particularly, this tendency often appeared when implementing 'story corner' than 'exploratory activity'. The reason for this was inferred that teachers were not familiar with teaching mathematics in stories and that teachers' manual did not include concrete questions and students' expected responses. This paper included implications on how to promote mathematical communication specifically in lower grades in elementary school.
The "Figure Equation" chapter of current high school curriculum prevents students from relating the concept with what they studied in middle school Euclidean geometry. Woo(1998) concerns that the curriculum introduces the concept merely in algebraic ways without providing students with opportunities to relate it with their prior understanding of geometry, which is based on Euclidean one. In the present study, a sequence of GeoGebra-embedded-geometry lessons was designed so that students could be introduced to and solve problems of the Analytic Geometry by triggering their prior understanding of the Euclidean Geometry which they had learnt in middle school. The study contributes to the field of mathematics education by suggesting a sequence of geometry lessons where students could introduce to the coordinate geometry meaningfully and conceptually in high school.
In this paper, we introduce a modified Moore Method designed for the multivariable calculus course, and discuss about the effective teaching and learning method by observing the changes in the understanding of students' learning and the effects on students' learning in the class implemented by this modified Moore Method. This teaching experiment research was conducted with the 15 students who took the multivariable calculus course offered as a 3 week summer session in 2008 at H University. To guide the students' active preparation, stepwise course materials structured in the form of questions on the important mathematical notions were provided to the students in advance. We observed the process of the students' small-group collaborative learning activities and their presentations in the class, and analysed the students' class journals collected at the end of every lecture and the survey carried out at the end of the course. The analysis of these results show that the students have come to recognize that a deeper understanding of the subjects are possible through their active process of search and discovery, and the discussion among the peers and teaching each other allowed a variety of learning experiences and reflective thinking.
This research aims to conduct the teaching experiment based on the constructivism to elementary preservice teachers and report on how they construct and develop the mathematical knowledge on ratio concept. Furthermore, this research aims to examine the significances and difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" which are conceived by elementary preservice teachers. As the results of this research, I identified the possibilities and limits of mathematical knowledge construction by elementary preservice teachers in the "constructivist teaching experiment". And the elementary preservice teachers pointed out the significances of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the experience of prior thinking on the concept to be learned, the deep understanding on the concept, the active participation to the lesson, and the experience of learning process of elementary students. Also they pointed out the difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the consumption of much time to carry out the constructivist teaching, the absence of direct feedbacks by teacher, and the adaption on the constructivist lesson.
Functional thinking is a central topic in school mathematics and the purpose of teaching functional thinking is to develop student's functional thinking ability. Functional thinking which has to be taught in elementary school must be the thinking in terms of phenomenon which has attributes of 'connection'- assignment and dependence. The qualitative methods for evaluation of development of functional thinking can be based on students' activities which are related to functional thinking. With this purpose, teachers have to provide students with paradigm of the functional situation connected to the other subjects which have attributes of 'connection' and guide them by proper questions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find teaching method for functional thinking by situation posing connected with other subject. We suggest the following ways for functional situation posing though the process of three steps : preparation, adaption and reflection of functional situation posing. At the first stage of preparation for functional situation, teacher should investigate student's environment, mathematical knowledge and level of functional thinking. With this purpose, teachers analyze various curriculum which can be used for teaching functional thinking, extract functional situation among them and investigate the utilization of functional situation as follows : ${\cdot}$ Using meta-plan, ${\cdot}$ Using mathematical journal, ${\cdot}$ Using problem posing ${\cdot}$ Designing teacher's questions which can activate students' functional thinking. For this, teachers should be experts on functional thinking. At the second stage of adaption, teacher may suggest the following steps : free exploration ${\longrightarrow}$ guided exploration ${\longrightarrow}$ expression of formalization ${\longrightarrow}$ application and feedback. Because we demand new teaching model which can apply the contents of other subjects to the mathematic class. At the third stage of reflection, teacher should prepare analysis framework of functional situation during and after students' products as follows : meta-plan, mathematical journal, problem solving. Also teacher should prepare the analysis framework analyzing student's respondence.
This study aims to develop a field trip program for the Hantan River geopark in Pocheon using Orion's field trip model. The selected learning sites were the Hwajeogyeon and Bidulginang Falls, famous geosites of the Hantan River geopark in Pocheon. The field trip program consisted of six preparatory units, two field trip units, and two summary units. The preparatory stage helped reduce the novelty space considering cognitive, psychological, and geographical factors. In the field trip stage, students acquire concepts linked to learning elements in the curriculum scientifically and encourage interest in science. In the summary stage, students organized the geological phenomena observed in the field and inferred the vicinity of the Pocheon Hantan River region. The field trip program was modified to give enough time for observation activities to increase students' interest in science and to connect concepts with learning elements in the curriculum in the outdoor learning phase to allow students' convergent thinking. Implementing the field trip program raises students' interest and attitude in science.

The purpose of this study is to identify whether math class with clip-type contents has a significant impacts on the academic achievement and attitude of students. To answer the questions, two classes of 4th graders at Sinlim Elementary School in Gwanak-gu, Seoul were selected as subjects; they were divided into experimental group and comparative group. They were confirmed as a homogeneous group at the significance level of 0.05 during a pre-test. The findings are as follows. First, math class with clip-type contents had positive influence on the academic achievement. Second, math class with clip-type contents had positive influence on the attitude towards learning. Furthermore, proper clip-type contents for class boost their understanding and enhance their mathematical thinking with multiple views. It led to their self-confidence in learning math, developing a positive attitude towards math. The benefits of the present research can be summarized as follows. First, the math class with clip-type contents benefited both teachers and students. For teachers, it helped them boost the quality of their teaching. For students, it helped them understand the class better, improving their academic achievement. Second, the diverse, interesting contents had a positive impact on the following of the students: self-concept of math; attitude towards math; learning habits.
The purpose of this study was to understand science teaching experiences of elementary school teachers who taught the system thinking-based science inquiry class. The phenomenological methods were applied to analyze four elementary teachers' meaningful experiences. The four step methods of phenomenological experience research proposed by Giorgi (1985) and interview questions developed by Seidman (1998) and Schuman (1982) were used in order to collect qualitative data. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, teachers intentionally tried to ask divergent thinking questions which promoted the system thinking in classes. The teachers used divergent thinking questions to promote their students' thinking activities and to induce students' system thinking. In addition, the receptive mood created by teachers and interactive environments had a positive effect on promoting system thinking skills. Second, teachers remarked lack of teaching and learning materials and difficulties in selecting themes of their classes in order to teach the system thinking-based science inquiry class effectively. In addition, it was very difficult for teachers to evaluate the contents and processes of students' learning correctly because there were little evaluative tools and methods readily available. The findings indicated that there were some limitations in maximizing the effects of system thinking-based science inquiry instruction due to elementary students' inappropriate process skills of inquiry activities. Findings of this study revealed significant insights about elementary school teachers' experiences regarding the system thinking-based science class.
