Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to identify factors affecting anxiety about disaster damage potential in Gyonggi-do and evacuation behavior that influences evacuation behavior. Method: Multiple regression analysis was performed to test the hypothesis and to analyze the influence of anxiety about disaster damage potential and perceived stress, and analyzed similarity in correspondence between age and anxiety about disaster damage potential. Results: The anxiety about disaster damage potential of a group vulnerable to safety and anxiety about disaster damage potential of disaster system collapse were perceived in close proximity. Disaster system collapse, evacuation life, and natural disasters were found to be factors affecting perceived stress. Stress and natural disasters were found to be influencing factors on evacuation behavior. Conclusion: The necessity of managing stress was confirmed since anxiety about natural disaster damage potential and stress affect evacuation behavior. The recent experiences of heavy rain disasters indicate that the anxiety about disaster damage potential is expected to increase. The findings also indicate the importance of preventive planning and psychological management to manage the anxiety about disaster damage potential.
Background: This study investigated whether pre- and peri-disaster experiences influence on PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and whether post-disaster stress by life changes have impact on PTSD after controlling pre- and peri-disaster factors. Methods: Data came from a sample of 1,182 respondents who experienced natural disasters (flood and typhoon) in South Korea from 2012 to 2015. The SPSS Win 22.0 program was used for descriptive analysis, t-test, Chi-square test, Pearson's correlation and logistic regression analysis. Results: The results indicated that 24.3% of the disaster victims were in PTSD risk group. Compared with non-PTSD, PTSD risk group showed lower interpersonal trust and satisfaction, higher depression and anxiety, and lower subjective well-being. The results of hierarchical logistc regression revealed that all pre-, peri-, and post-disaster factors increased the probability of developing PTSD, except for relocation of residence. Moreover, a primary post-disaster predictor of PTSD was economic distress after controlling for pre- and peri-disaster. Conclusions: This study tested relative contributions of post-disaster factors on PTSD.

This paper examines the evolving role of ijang(village representative) and his job stress during Pyeongchang floods in 2006. Results based on telephone survey and interviews reveal that ijang played a crucial role in evacuating residents, allocating resources and commanding the recovery, although official job description considered him as only a mediator between local officers and villagers. Moreover, unexpected enormous burden created severe job stress to many ijangs; while 60 percent felt like quitting the job, about three fourth felt fretful whenever the telephone rang and lost some weights. Chi-square analysis also indicated that previous job training, villagers' abuse, and disaster damages were significantly related with job stress. These results suggest that the emergent human resources model rather than the command and control model can be an effective approach for a disaster management plan in rural Korea.
Purpose: This study was conducted for Pohang citizens who experienced Pohang earthquake damage. The purpose of this study is to examine how these post-traumatic stress level affect post-traumatic growth and to examine the mediating effects of stress coping on the causal relationship between post-traumatic stress level and post-traumatic growth. Method: The survey was conducted for the citizens who experienced Pohang earthquake, and the survey data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program. Result: Post traumatic stress level has been shown to affect post traumatic growth. In addition, as a result of examining the mediating effect of stress coping method on the relationship among these variables, the problem solving center and the social support method had a mediating effect, but the evasion method did not mediate. Conclusion: The post-traumatic stress level caused by disasters such as earthquakes was found to be able to overcome the obstacle and grow after trauma, as the coping method is problem solving and social support.
As the role of volunteers in disaster settings has been growing overtime, the present study was aimed to understand voluntary disaster workers with their burnout pattern and examine group differences in their secondary traumatic stress and world assumptions. Total of 70 voluntary workers who served for recovery from Sewol ferry disaster participated in this study. Using cluster analysis, we identified three distinct cluster groups on the basis of three burnout subscale scores(emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, depersonalization): Group 1 was characterized by the highest score on personal accomplishment and low levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Group 2 scored the highest on emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and relatively high on personal accomplishment. Group 3 was characterized by the lowest scores on three subscales. Results from χ2 tests showed that groups differed significantly on types and the period of support activities. Analysis of variance was conducted to identify further group differences. The results indicated that Group 2 scored the highest on secondary traumatic stress, while Group 1 scored the highest on worthiness of the self. Finally, the clinical implications and limitations of these results as well as suggestions for further research were discussed.

Objectives : After disaster, some people develop posttraumatic stress sequelae such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, substance use disorders, and suicide. To date, numerous screening and assessment tools for behavioral health issues including mental health problems, psychosocial maladjustment and status of recovery after disaster have been developed. In this condition, one of important topics is to choose instruments that can quickly and accurately measure the issues. Methods : This article reviewed several self-reported scales in adults for disaster behavioral health, which were searched using academic search engines like PubMed, Scopus, KoreaMed and KISS from the earliest available date of indexing through January 31, 2015. Results : More than 40 eligible instruments evaluating the disaster behavioral health issues containing posttraumatic stress sequelae, psychological and social resources, non-disaster stress, and general functions were presented in terms of availability, effectiveness, and expeditiousness. Also, we introduced basic frame aiming on practical usage, which includes standard version and brief version of the instruments for disaster behavioral health. Conclusion : We suggest the accessibility and the applicability of assessment instruments for disaster behavioral health. The systemic review of this article will provide further directions for them.

Recently, the COVID-19 Pandemic is not an infectious disease-level disaster, but a complex disaster, making it difficult to respond with traditional disaster response management methods. As a result, experiencing psychological stress and trauma such as COVID-19 has emerged as a new social problem. In preemptively predicting and effectively responding to these psychological disasters and crises, the necessity and direction of non-face-to-face disaster psychological support using ICT technology in traditional services are discussed.

The purpose of the present study was to examine psychological consequences of indirect trauma exposure through the disaster news. Participants(N=439) completed some self-report questionnaires such as Posttraumatic Risk Checklist(PRC), Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R), and Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale(MFODS) at 68.11(±18.47) days after the Sewol ferry disaster. The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling by AMOS 23.0 program. The results showed that fear of death and periand post-traumatic crisis factors mediated the association of news exposure immediately after disaster and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Findings in this study indicated that news exposure immediately after disaster influenced fear of death which led to the peri- and post-traumatic crisis, and these crisis factors increased posttraumatic stress symptoms. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.
Purpose: This study aimed to verify the impact of Habitat for Humanity Korea's disaster risk reduction intervention on the mental health and satisfaction with life among residents of southern Bangladesh who had constantly suffered from disaster stress due to perennial flooding. Method: The target group was 138 residents who were pre-surveyed in August 2020 and post-surveyed in November 2021. The interventions consisted of individual incremental housing, public facilities for evacuation, and disaster response training for capacity development. The data were analysed using paired sample t-tests for pre-post changes and one-way analysis of variance to identify differences between treatment groups. Result: The results showed significant improvements in residents' depression, anxiety, somatisation and satisfaction with life after the intervention, with significant differences in mental health levels between the intervention treatments. Specifically, relatively higher disaster mitigation effects were found for individual infrastructure improvements and employment facilities compared to disaster response drills. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the positive role of Habitat for Humanity Korea's disaster risk reduction interventions on the mental health recovery of disaster victims and suggest practical approaches that can be applied in disaster risk areas.
