(KAI) has been performing LCH (Light Civil Helicopter) core technology development program regarding automatic flight control system (AFCS) software development. And KAI has been developing flight mechanics model using FLIGHTLAB to design and evaluate the AFCS flight control law. This paper presents the handling quality assessment environment development results through the combining FLIGHTLAB with a legacy simulator. And this paper details the FLIGHTLAB model, application development process and FLIGHTLAB interface design. The developed handling quality assessment environment has been demonstrated with the ADS-33E hover and pirouette MTE (Mission Task Element) maneuver simulation.

  • A robust controller is proposed to design a flight autopilot for lateral motion control. The control system has two control loops in order to meet the performance and to maintain the stability-robustness for a nonsquare flight system with uncertain aerodynamic variations and disturbance. One is designed via linear quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery(LQG/LTR) design methodology for the inner loop. The other is designed via proportional controller design method for the outer loop. To show the effectiveness of this control system, it is compared with the LQG/LTR control system for a square flight system and is analyzed for the performance/stability-robustness to model uncertainties and disturbance via wind gusts. It is found that the proposed control system has good heading command-following performance under allowable sideslip angle in spite of model uncertainties and disturbance.

  • This paper addresses the design of the auto race-track and figure-8 flight mode which can be applied to expand the loitering flight mode and increase the safety of UAV. To implement these flight modes, necessary waypoints and entry points can be calculated automatically from several information of the ground control system. The flight logic is proposed to pass the desired waypoints as well as entry points and transfer to the desired flight path by combining the light-of-sight and loitering guidance controller. The proposed algorithm and logic is verified using the 6-DOF UAV model and nonlinear simulation under the several flight conditions.

  • This paper presents a method for designing an autopilot of the BTT missile using 2DOF Wiener-Hopf control technique to improve tracking performance. Linear controllers are designed based on the linearized models which are obtained from the nonlinear missile dynamic equations at various operating points. The gain scheduling technique is used to implement the final autopilot. A simulation on the flight of missiles is carried out through the use of 6DOF equation program including exact nonlinear equations of the missile and the variations of aerodynamic variables in order to check applicability of the suggested method in real situation.

  • An autopilot for the class of Bank-To-Turn missiles is developed using a multivariable plant model & control design methodology. The roll-pitch-yaw cross coupling is included in the design considerations. Feedback system is designed using the Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery (LQG/LTR). Nonlinear simulations are presented to demonstrate the performances of the designed system.

  • In contrast with STT missiles, the guidance law design for BTT missiles should be based on 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics, since the pitch and roll channels of BTT missiles are coupled dynamically. More generally than the prior works, the dynamics of pitch and roll channels, as well as 3-dimensional pursuit kinematics are considered in the design of our terminal-phase optimal guidance law for BTT missiles proposed in this paper. Thereby, the proposed optimal guidance law guarantees high capturability with small miss distance without significant performance degradation due to time-lag effect even in case of relatively slow autopilot dynamics. Moreover, the resulting optimal guidance law is expressed explicitly in feedback-form with the coefficients given as the functions of time-to-go. The effectiveness and practicality of our work is demonstrated through various simulation results.

  • Automatic Rudder Trim System(ARTS) is a device to reduce the pilot's work load for rudder trimming greatly required in varying abruptly aircraft's engine power. This paper represents a technical analysis and a design of control law of the ARTS. The control law of the ARTS is designed based on the analysis of aircraft's characteristics, system's requirements, and limitations. The control law is comprised of open loop control using the rudder trim map for a specific aircraft and closed loop control to compensate the error of the open loop control system. flight test results show that the ARTS can reduce pilot's work load for rudder trimming dramatically and can compensate the aircraft's transient yaw motion.

  • Recent technological advances in wireless networks and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have led to the development of different types of mini-UAVs and their utilizations in various ways. This study endeavors to develop a low-cost mini-UAV with autonomous flight capability, in order to obtain geospatial information of a small or medium-sized area, and also assess its flight stability by comparing the predetermined flight paths against the actual flight paths. Based on a post-development flight test, stable flight has been proven achievable as follows: the maximum endurance speed is 1 hour, the flying distance is 50km, the horizontal accuracy of flight paths is about ${\pm}6{\sim}8m$, and the altitude accuracy is about ${\pm}8m$. Therefore, it is deemed that high-resolution images which can be utilized for geospatial information are obtainable. This indicates that a UAV flying at an altitude of 200m can acquire images across a $2km{\times}3km$ area on the ground within 25 minutes, which validates its high usability for obtaining high-solution images at low altitudes in the future.
