  • The present study aimed to emprically verify the materialistic pursuits process of undergraduates by applying the escape theory of materialism(Donnelly et al., 2016). Among the six steps of Donnelly's model, the first step is percieving that the fall short of high standards of life, as measured by external contingencies of self-worth. The second step is blaming the self for falling short of standards, as measured by self-discrepancy. The third step of high aversive self-awareness is measured by low stability of self-esteem. A total of 465(203 male and 262 female) college students participated in the online survey and the model was tested using structural equation model. We found that the relationship of external contingencies of self-worth and materialism was mediated by self-discrepancy and there was a sequential mediation effect of self-discrepancy and the stability of self-esteem. The direct effect of external contingencies of self-worth on materialism was also significant. This study is meaningful in that it used the escape theory to emprically verify the materialistic pursuit process of Korean undergraduates living in a meritocratic society.

In order to carry out the purposes of research, the study set a model which supposes that perfectionistic self-presentation is mediator between internalized shame and social anxiety. A total of 382 high school students participated in the study. The results of the study are as follows: First, the results of this study showed that the internalized shame and social anxiety appear to have a significant static correlation. In particular, the sense of inadequacy, which is a subordinate concept of the internalized shame, was correlated with social anxiety. Second, perfectionistic self-presentation showed a partially mediated the relationship between internalized shame and perfectionistic self-presentation. These results should be studied not only in cognitive factors contributing to social anxiety but also in the individual inner workings of psychological factors.

Data collection was May 1-30, 2019, and the final 246 replies were used for analysis. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program using descriptive statics and a t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The average self-efficacy score was 3.23±0.39. The overall standard precaution knowledge, average awareness, and average performance were 15.87±2.17, 4.63±0.46, and 4.73±0.32, respectively. The standard precaution performance, according to the general characteristics, was not significant. A positive correlation was observed between the standard precaution performance and self-efficacy (r=.266, p<.001) and awareness (r=.435, p<.001). Regression analysis showed a 21.3% variance in the nursing student's standard precaution performance with self-efficacy (β=.396, p<.001), awareness (β=.180, p=.002). A follow-up survey of the factors influencing nursing student's standard precaution performance and the development of a program will be required.

In parameter verification, partially mediated effect of self-directed Perfectionism and social self-concept was verified in the relationship between father's affection factor and achievement motivation. This study confirmed that self-directed Perfectionism of science gifted students has positive effects on adaptation. The importance of social and moral education and the father's affection were found as well.

  • The study was intended to explore the relevance of the variables below, assuming that the intolerance of uncertainty and dichotomous thinking would represent sequential serialized effects in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and social anxiety. The data of this study were collected on questionnaire survey of 252 adult men and women in Seoul using perfectionistic self-presentation scale, social interaction anxiety scale, social phobia scale, intolerance of uncertainty scale and dichotomous thinkingI-30R as index, which results are as follow. First, intolerance of uncertainty and dichotomous thinking showed perfect mediation effects on the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and social anxiety. Intolerance of uncertainty and dichotomous thinking were identified as contributing factors to the development and preservation of social anxiety by perfectionistic self-presenters. Second, in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and dichotomous thinking, intolerance of uncertainty showed mediation effect. And in the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and social anxiety, dichotomous thinking showed mediation effect. This suggested that if tolerance of uncertainty was deficient, it was likely to lead to dichotomous thinking. And a dichotomous thinking has prompted or accelerated negative cognitive biases resulting from intolerance of uncertainty, triggering and deepening social anxiety. Lastly, the limitations of this study and future research direction were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of help-seeking and concealment in the relationship between perfectionism, depression, and anxiety. The participants were 252 university students, and analyses were conducted using PASW 18.0 and Amos 8.0. Help-seeking was confirmed to be a mediating variable between self-oriented perfectionism, depression, and anxiety. That is, self-oriented perfectionism had an effect on depression and anxiety through help-seeking. Also, concealment was a partially mediating variable between socially prescribed perfectionism, depression, and anxiety. The need to develop counseling and education approaches as a special intervention is discussed. The approaches are meant to reduce socially prescribed perfectionism and concealment. Limitations and implications for further study are suggested.
