  • In order to determine dental clinic inpatients' awareness about their periodontal health, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on total 212 inpatients admitted in 2 dental clinics and 1 dental hospital located all in Seoul metropolitan area. Resulting data were analyzed using SPSS 14.0 statistic program. As a result, this study could come to the following conclusions: 1. It was found that overall awareness about health of periodontal tissues averaged 3.40 points; our respondents showed highest awareness on prevention of periodontal diseases(3.95 points), while showing the lowest awareness on maintenance of periodontal tissues(3.09 points). 2. For differences in the awareness on periodontal health depending on general characteristics, it was found that there were significant differences between respective groups in overall periodontal health awareness and its sub-domains depending on sex and occupation. 3. For possible correlations between respective sub-domains of awareness, it was found that preventive awareness had most significant correlations with causal awareness, while preventive awareness had no significant correlation with symptomatic awareness. 4. For differences in the extent of oral health practice and periodontal health awareness, it was found that the more frequency of daily toothbrushing plus scaling experiences led to more significant differences in all the sub-domains of awareness.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.

  • This study will be used as basic data to hold clinical training effective by researching and analyzing frequency, satisfaction and stress for the clinical practice of dental hygiene course students. The survey was undergone from Feb. 1, 2014 to Mar. 31 for 219 dental hygiene course juniors who had experienced clinical training in 3 year colleges located in Daejeon and Chungcheong Province. From the study, general and university hospital holds the highest satisfaction in clinical practice and dental offices in acquiring skills. Also, a significant difference is shown between the frequency and satisfaction according to clinical training sheets. The highest degree of stress is shown in dental offices for 'toothbrushing training and dental health education' and in general and university hospital for 'patient counselling'. Therefore, consideration should be made to establish the direction of education, standard criteria and evaluation method for student clinical training to raise its effectiveness.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide data on the development of educational programs to maintain oral health in adolescence by identifying the relevance of health behavior and symptom to adolescents. The subjects of this study were 27,919 high school students' using the 15th (2019) Youth Health Behavior Online Survey. The logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors influencing oral symptoms. The results showed that the recognition of gingiva pain was significantly lower in the subjects with male sex, lower education level, higher income level, and higher subjective perception of oral health. Higher the stress, higher the pain recognition, revealing a statistical significance. The awareness on bad breath-related symptoms was significantly higher in the adolescents with male sex, higher degree of stress, and lower frequency of daily toothbrushing. The lower awareness on halitosis was associated with higher income and higher subjective perception of oral health, showing a statistical significance. This study found that the health behavior of adolescents had an effect on their oral symptoms and the finding is expected to help develop programs for preventing those oral symptoms.

  • This study examined the tongue coating index and halitosis to determine the association with the oral care behavior and variation in halitosis according to the tongue coating index, dental calculus, and the oral environment before and after scaling among 130 participants in scaling practices of the Department of Dental Hygiene at K University in Daejeon. The subjects were asked to participate in a survey, in an oral examination for the tongue coating index, dental plaque, and dental calculus status, and in halitosis measurement. The tongue coating most significantly affected halitosis and the tongue coating index was strongly correlated with smoking and tongue washing. More frequent toothbrushing, a lower level of halitosis; and nonsurgical treatment of scaling were effective in reducing halitosis; age was associated with the tongue coating index. Therefore, it will be necessary to perform good oral care and reduce the amount of dental plaque and tongue coating and undergo regular scaling with the objective of improving oral health and reducing halitosis.

  • Halitosis is primarily caused by oral conditions. In particular, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are mainly responsible for intra-oral halitosis. They are closely associated with the water temperature. In this study, we investigated the association between halitosis and water temperature for oral rinse (10℃, 30℃, and 45℃) using the BB checker and oral chroma. The application of BB checker on an empty stomach revealed that halitosis decreased with the use of tongue cleaners (p=0.001) and toothpastes (p=0.002). Furthermore, halitosis decreased after drinking milk (VSCs-induced food intake) (p=0.000). There were no significant differences in the results of oral chroma. Finally, we measured halitosis on an empty stomach and after drinking milk. The BB checker showed increased halitosis after drinking milk (p<0.001). The oral chroma showed decreased hydrogen sulfide (p<0.001) and increased methyl mercaptan (p=0.009) and dimethyl sulfide (p=0.002) after drinking milk. In conclusion, halitosis cannot be modulated using water temperature for oral rinse. The findings of this study cannot be generalized because of the small sample size and the limits of age and sex. Further studies are required to extensively analyze both sexes and various age groups, with more number of subjects.
