Localization of concrete is a phenomenon such that the deformation of concrete is localized in
finite region with softening behavior and it governs ultimate load of concrete. In this Paper,
concrete under strain localization was modeled with localization region and non-localization region
and lc~calization behavior was formulated based on averaging concept of heterogeneous material.
By using the formulation, the localization phenomena of concrete under uniaxial loadings were
well predicted. The analytical results show that size of localization region of concrete under uniaxial
compression is three times of maximum aggregate size and the size effect of concrete is
well predicted. The use of tension-softening curve obtained from direct tension test is suitable
for well prediction of localization of concrete under uniaxial tension.
To analyze the behavioral characteristics of rocks on indirect tests and uniaxial compressive strength, researchers have investigated 1417 pieces of rock block, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea. The same behavioral characteristics have been shown in every type of sedimentary rock and in the same species of rock in the case of Brazilian strength application. This suggests that correlations of rocks for geological considerations can lead to high reliability of the experimental results in case of an indirect method.

This study was aimed to investigate the tensile behaviors of PE(Polyethylene) fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composites with different combinations of micro silica sand and normal sand(river sand) with maximum particle size of 4.75 mm. Flow test result indicated the increase of flowability with higher replacement ratio of river sand. There was no noticeable difference in the mean compressive strength with different replacement ratio of river sand, but the variation in the compressive strength increased as higher amount of river sand was adopted for the replacement. The difference in the uniaxial tensile strength was negligible, but the tensile strain capacity was significantly influenced by the replacement ratio of river sand. It is thought that increased density of multiple cracks induced improved tensile strain capacity when higher percentage of river sand was adopted for fine aggregate. The deviation in the strain capacity increased as the replacement ratio of river sand was higher, as in the compressive strength. This study presented the feasibility of using normal sand instead of micro silica sand for highly ductile cementitious composites with equivalent or better uniaxial tensile performance, even though it might increase the deviation in the performance.
Isotropic rock and anisotropic rock have different tensile strength which has the greatest influence on rock failure. In this study, elastic modulus of anisotropic rock is obtained through uniaxial compression test, and tensile strength and tension failure behavior are analyzed through indirect tensile strength test. Stress concentration factor of a specimen at the center is obtained from anisotropic elastic modulus and strain by indirect tensile strength test. Theoretical solutions for tensile strength of isotropic and anisotropic rock are compared. Stress concentration factor of anisotropic rock is either higher or lower than isotropic rock depending on the inclination angle of bedding plane. The use of stress concentration factor of isotropic rock resulted in overestimation or underestimation of tensile strength.
Structural rearrangements of uni-axially deformed polyethylenes containing 1-octene comonomer and HDPE upon heating were investigated by time-resolved small and wide angle X-ray scattering techniques. During heating, structural changes including crystal transformation and lamellar rearrangement noted were very different depending on the comonomer contents. At low comonomer content below 2 wt%, inverse martensitic transformation of crystal lattice from monoclinic to orthorhombic cell and the rearrangement of broken lamellar units into more ordered and perfect lamellar stacks were noted with the temperature increase. At high contents above 9.5 wt%, however, polyethylene copolymers showed neither the crystal transformation nor lamellar rearrangement that can be attributed to low crystallinity and high content of branch units.
In order to optimize the design of unidirectional fiber reinforced composite C-rings, a viscoelastic load relaxation behavior was analyzed under a point load. Initially, the deflection and bending stiffness were calculated based on the elastic beam theory and the viscoelastic relaxation and creep behaviors were derived from the elastic solution using the correspondence theorem. Besides the orthotropic mechanical properties of the composite, asymmetric mechanical property due to the different tensile and compressive properties were also considered. Except the deviation affected by the relatively large thickness of the specimen compared to the radius, the calculated relaxation showed good agreement with the experimental result.

The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of types of alkali-activators and curing conditions on the compressive and tensile behavior of fiber-reinforced cementless composites. Two types of alkali-activators and two curing conditions were determined and density test, compressive strength test, and uniaxial tension test were performed. Test results showed that the cementless composite with sodium silicate showed higher performance in terms of strength, tensile strain capacity, and toughness than that with calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. The effect of curing conditions depends on the types of alkali-activators.

This study investigated experimentally the tensile behavior of polyetylene fiber-reinforced cementless composite. Four types of polyetylene fiber-reinforced cementless composite were designed. The water to binder ratio was 0.30-0.38, and the amount of polyetylene fiber was 1.75 vol%. A series of experiments including uniaxial tension, density, and compression tests were performed to evaluate the performance of the composites. From the test results, it was exhibited that the composite has superior tensile performance such as high tensile strength and tensile strain capacity compared with other types of composites.

This paper concentrates on the analysis of reinforced concrete(R/C) structures subjected to monotonic loading, from zero to ultimate loads. Tensile cracking, the nonlinear stress-strain relationship for concrete and reinforcement are taken into account the concrete is assumed to be elastic in tension region and elasto-hardening plastic in compression region. The Kupfer's failure criteria and associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bar is considered as a elasto-hardening platic material. The tension stiffening effect of the concrete between cracks is also considered. The numerical error depends on the used finite element mesh size is reduced by correcting the slope of strain softening region of the concrete according to the developed energy criteria.
