  • Creating more efficient and effective intermodal transportation service in Northeast range is a critical issue because of more increased trade volume & demand for intermodal service in the world market and geographical barriers associated with goods transportation, especially in Korea, China and Japan. This study examines the possibility of Rail-ferry introduction and possible route in Northest area which can provide each country mutual economical and logistical satisfaction. But, this study requires more empirical and concrete examination based on the cost & benefit analysis.

  • Other than in the fields of rolling stock and marine, in England, UK, Phenolic Composites (herein after, PCs) have been significantly utilized to fire protecting panels in construction, in particular, in architectures. In general, indeed, so-called "Plastic" or "Synthesized Resins" have been applied successfully in our societies all over the world, however, once, when ignited from somewhat reason, they burn much easily generating large amount of "SMOKE" from their nature of petroleum-borne materials as a matter of fact, people have forgotten about it. "SMOKE" caused many fire accidents horror tragedies as everyday people know today. The experts in this field such as PC engineers, researchers and others can take their responsibilities to explain it, persuade it and realize "Safer Environment for People" with well-experienced and technology innovated PCs. In this paper, the co-authors, collaborating UK and Japan, are making efforts to report how the PCs work good jobs to our societies showing some successful track records in construction or architecture fields in UK. How about on this matter in Japan\ulcorner "SMOKE fire" is always waiting fur us. Consciousness of Fire Officers and Improving the Working Conditions (소방공무원 의식과 처우개선에 관한 연구)

  • This research intended to show a reasonable way to improve working conditions of fire officers in Korea. It shows that fire officers have dignity of their social roles even though they have the unfairness in a work time, rewards, promotions and opportunities of overseas training compared with those of other government officers. The unfairness needs to be solved. In addition, there are more demands in fire fighters, but part of a regional government system already composed of 64.06% of fire officers, which means, there are too many fire fighters in one regional government. Therefore, it is difficult to employ more fire fighters. This is one of barriers to prevent from improvement of the working conditions. To improve the working conditions and to overcome the barriers, there are important solutions to counter the problems. Those are application of alternative policies and systems. Compared with the employment system and workload of fire officers in USA, Japan and other advanced countries, it is necessary to introduce alternative policies which include operation of partial three-shift system, expansion of oversees training, expansion of rotational-off system and improvement of employees' welfare policies.

  • We propose an optical-based measuring instrument of catenary system in electric railway. This system was made to utilize line scan camera as inspecting system to measure the stagger and height of overhead contact wire in railway and composed with optical type source and FPGA-based image acquisition system with PCI slot. Vision acquisition software has been used for the application to programming interface for image acquisition, display, and storage with a frequency of sampling. The proposed optical-based measuring instrument to measure the contact wire geometry shows promising on-field applications for online condition motoring. Also, this system can be applied to measure the hight and stagger or other geometry of different type of overhead catenary system.

Financial Resource Allocation for Seoul Metropolitan Railway Transfer Center and Connection Transportation Facility (수도권 철도역 광역환승센터 및 연계시설의 재원분담 방안)

  • In this paper, the current financial resource allocation principle and issues are studied in the beginning for the metropolitan transfer centers and connection transport facility. In addition to this, foreign cases for this matter are performed for the USA and Japan. Based on the foreign cases, the optimal subsidy ratio of central government is suggested. For the metropolitan transfer centers, at least 50% of subsidy is required from 30% at present and from "necessary costs" to "total costs." For connection transport facility, 50% for road facility and 70% for railway facility are proposed, which is not supported at all at present. As far as connection transport facility are concerned, resources allocation scheme between local governments has also been proposed in the proportional to the length of connection transport facility of each local government.

A Study on Standard Construction Process Management System for Prediction of Proper Construction Period of Subsea Tunnel (해저터널 적정 공사기간 예측을 위한 표준공정관리 체계 연구)

  • As a typical domestic subsea tunnel construction the Gadeok subsea tunnel applying the method of immersed tunnel has been completed and the Boryeong-Taean subsea tunnel is under construction using NATM. The high-speed railway subsea tunnels between the Honam and Jeju are under consideration, and the feasibility of constructing subsea tunnels with Japan and China is also under consideration. However, it is difficult to provide the process plan information for the construction work such as the analysis of the feasibility of the subsea tunnel and the prediction of the proper construction period because there is no case of domestic construction for it applying the shield TBM method. Due to economic and other reasons, government organizations are reluctant to apply the shield TBM, and there is lack of data on the construction process management field using the shield TBM method. Therefore, a standard construction process management system for the subsea tunnel is needed to analyze the feasibility of the subsea tunnel and to predict the proper construction period. By presenting the standard construction process management system of subsea tunnels such as WBS, Network Diagram, and construction period calculation model, I hope to contribute technically and economically to future subsea tunnel projects.

  • It is necessary to develop a bridgehead port for trading with northern countries to promote trade through the East Sea because the East Sea Rim economic bloc around the Northeast Asia including South Korea, China, Russia, Japan, and North Korea has a high growth potential in the future. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a strategic direction to enhance the competitiveness of Donghae Port through reinforcement of container cargoes by conducting Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) for stakeholders of Donghae Port. The analysis results suggest that it is necessary to improve the five evaluation factors: attractiveness of container and bulk volumes, appropriate ratio of export/import container quantities, frequency of vessel entry and diversity of sea routes, convenience of complex linked transportation, and competitiveness of cargo handling equipment. The implications of this study are as follows. First, it is necessary to continuously research the current status of container and bulk cargo volumes of the port and ways to increase the absolute cargo volume. Second, we need to consider realistic alternatives to improve the ratio of export/import container quantities. Third, in terms of network, we should establish a service improvement plan to increase the frequency of port calls and the diversity of sea routes. Furthermore, incentives should be provided to increase the trade volume of Donghae Port through strengthened complex linked transportation function. Finally, it is urgently necessary to provide investment support for container handling equipment as an essential requirement for the activation of the container cargoes in Donghae Port.

A Study on the Adaptation and Change of Amusement Culture on the Case of Wolmido Pleasure Ground during the Japanese Colonial Era (일제강점기 월미도유원지를 통한 행락 문화의 수용과 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Pleasure grounds, which were introduced during the Japanese colonial era, were places for organizing new amusement activities, and developed into a large-scale private spaces and a new type of public space at the same time. This study explores the scenery and accommodations of pleasure grounds and the changes of the amusement culture through the Wolmido Pleasure Grounds, which was a typical pleasure grounds of the time. At that time, Wolmido became a comprehensive amusement/entertainment place with many elements of both Western and Japanese pleasure grounds such as exotic buildings harmonized with trees, a beach, a seaside school, public playing field, and zoo constructed on the Island. Wolmido Pleasure Ground, which was connected with Kyungsung by Kyungin railroad during the Japanese colonial era, is a good example showing the process of the popularization and commercialization of the amusement culture. The process of popularization of amusement shows the spreading of the enjoyment of leisure time with amusement activities through appreciating the beautiful scenery of the pleasure grounds among various social classes. The caste system was broken and anyone could use the pleasure grounds by paying the fee, of which there were many kinds, so the distinction between genders and the different classes, such as the Chosun people and Japanese, regarding amusement in pleasure grounds disappeared gradually. Also, pleasure grounds were a place for Western hobby-sports activities and were the means to generalize collective and dynamic activities through summer school and various sport games. At the same time, there were places for deviation from the existing social norms when it was combined with entertainment facilities. The commercialization of amusement took place in the form of an artificial entertainment culture within an artificial environment. First, the scenery was artificially constructed and this scenery created the image of paradise such as 'captivating summer vacation spot' and 'water kingdom'. This was the result of the combined intentions of the colonial authority, the railroad company and the amusement corporation to produce economic profits and encourage development in the area. Second, an artificial spectacle was constructed using nature as the backdrop. Buildings of various styles created a modernized and exotic image when they were combined with each other. Artifacts such as breakwaters and arcades created new attractions for people that enabled them to view both nature and the crowds from a whole different perspective. Third, pleasure grounds contributed to the advent of passive users who would just follow the given use and instructions. In this way, one can find the prototype of popular entertainment places of today such as sightseeing complexes, amusement parks, and theme parks through the construction of amusement grounds as a place for providing dynamic activities.

A Study on the Period of Commendatorying Jeongnyeo(旌閭) of Yukjeollyeo(六節閭) in Hoengseong-gun and People of Yukjeol(六節) (횡성군 육절려(六節閭)의 정려표창 연기(年記)와 육절 대상인물 고찰)

  • This thesis aims to how Seo Ye-won(徐禮元) who was the main character of Yukjeollyeo(六節閭) which means tangible cultural properties can receive Jeongnyeo(旌閭) and when he received it clearly. Also this thesis concentrates on why the name of 'Yukjeollyeo' was used even if there are five Jeongnyeos in the Yukjeollyeo. Lastly, this thesis also focuses on the people related to YookJeol. Seo Ye-won passed away with his family in 1593 when he acted as a head of local administration. In that time, the Jinjuseong(晉州城) battle was originated from Korea-Japan war(1592). After his death, Hoengseong(橫城) family(門中) and Confucian scholar made petition for administration in 1811. As a result Seo Ye-won and his wife Lady Lee of the Jeonju-Lee clan(全州李氏) were celebrated as the Jeongnyeo and Jeongyeogak was built in 1817. And his son(Seo Gye-seong:徐繼聖), Seo Gye-seong's wife Lady Noh of the Pungcheon-Noh clan(豊川盧氏), Seo Ye-won's daughter who were not married also could receive Jeongnyeo as Hoengseong family and confucian scholar made additional petition for administration in 1832. For these reasons, Jeongnyeogak(旌閭閣) was called 'Ojeongnyeo(五旌閭)'. After that, Miryang(密陽) family wanted to move it because Seon Ye-won is not the eldest son in the Hoengseoung family. But it could not be enforced and they made a new Yeokak(閭閣) and called 'Yukjeollyeo'. From that time to 1945, the name of Jeongnyeo in the Hoengseong had been still used 'OjeongYeo' and the signboard of Yukjeollyeo was hanged in Jeongnyeo in Hoengseong after 1945. Although there are five people who can get prize of Jeongnyeo, the reason why the name of 'YookJeol' is to memorize the loyalty of Seo Gye-cheol(徐繼哲) who was Seo Ye-won's second son. Hoengseong family made a representation to the government in order to made Seo Gye-cheol receive Jeongnyeo but he could not be celebrated. For these reasons, the loalty of Seo Gye-cheol with five people who received Jeongnyeo has been celebrated as 'YukJeol'. Through this study we could find the record of Yukjeollyeo and historic point clearly.
