  • Because of the gap between the cognitive levels of the students and the curricular materials for the students to understand, the secondary school students feel science difficult and they get to avoid science as they go up to the higher grade. So it is absolutely needed to take the active measures to improve the cognitive development of the students through some special programs stimulating their cognitive process. This study investigated the effects of thinking science activity program devised for cognitive acceleration of the students. After implementing thinking science program to 181 7th grade students, the effectiveness of this program was examined through the analysis of covariance of both experimental and control groups. The result of the study showed that the cognitive level of the students in experiment group dealt with thinking science program was more accelerated than that of the students in control group who were just taught regular science curriculum. Especially, the effect was clear to the students in stages 1 and 2B. It was also found that the percentage of the students who promoted from concrete operational stage to formal operational stage was higher in experimental group than in control group. The results of the study implied that cognitive acceleration of the students might be possible through the specially designed materials such as thinking science program.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of computer/internet game play on depression and life satisfaction via perceived self-control among older adults in Korea. Data were collected from a survey of 237 community-dwelling older adults (age${\geq}$65) who reported internet users. A path analysis was used to examine the causal relationship among the main constructs. Results showed that the computer/internet game play had positive effects on perceived self-control. Perceived self-control was found to decrease depression and improve life satisfaction among older adults. Additional analysis indicated that the computer/internet game play in older adults did not directly affect mental health (depression and life satisfaction) but indirectly affected it via perceived self-control. Furthermore, perceived self-control had greater effects on depression than on life satisfaction. These findings have crucial implications in that perceived sense of self-control needs to be seriously considered when we develop mental health games for older adults.

  • This study examined the influence of social support (social support from family, social support from friends), psychological behavioral characteristics (self-esteem, interpersonal dependency, locus of control), and stress on the depression levels of college students. The study subjects were 546 college students in D city. The survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire in October 2015. As a result, the depression levels were significantly higher in the group showing lower family and friends' social support, self-esteem, and locus of control, while it was significantly higher in the group showing higher interpersonal dependency and stress. The depression levels of the subjects showed a negative correlation with family and friends' social support, self-esteem, and locus of control, but a positive correlation with interpersonal dependency and stress. Covariance structure analysis revealed an increase in the depression levels of college students when the awareness of the stress source was higher, and when the awareness of social support or psychological behavioral characteristics was lower. These results suggest that the depression levels of college students would be increased when the social support and psychological behavioral characteristics are low, and when stress is high. In particular, it was influenced much more by stress than other factors. Therefore, to decrease the depression levels of college students, it would be necessary to put efforts to understand their main stress sources and then reduce them.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of science inquiry experiments emphasizing social interaction on the development of process skills of the students. The social interactions by cognitive level of the students were also analyzed. For this study, 197 8th grade students were sampled. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group. During four-month period, the experimental group received science inquiry experiments treatment emphasizing social interactions while the control group received traditional treatment. Not only science inquiry ability pretest-posttest, but also multiple data collection method such as a questionnaire, class observation, and audio/video recording were used in collecting the data. According to the results of this study, it was found that the mean score of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group at 0.05 level. It was also found that the students of high cognitive level led the peers and participated in the class discussion actively with the teacher while the students of low cognitive level followed the students of high cognitive level and showed inactive interaction with the teacher. Analysis of the students' perceptions on inquiry experiments showed that students participated in discussion actively in the class as these experiments gave an opportunity for them to discuss and were able to solve the problems with peers' help through discussion.

  • This study constructs an integrated model for university students' smart phone cyber bullying and tests interaction effects between causal and control factors. Causal factors include low self-control, differential association with cyber bullying peers, and victimization experiences; and control factors include internet ethics, perceived certainty of formal punishment, and bond to parents. This study focuses on examining how internet ethics buffers the effect of causal factors in cyber bullying. Results show that both differential association with cyber bullying peers and victimization experiences have significant effects on cyber bullying. And among the control factors, internet ethics only has a negative direct effect on cyber bullying. In addition, it is found that there are significant interaction effects between two causal factors - differential association with cyber bullying peers and victimization experiences - and internet ethics. It is also shown that there is a significant interaction effect between victimization experience and bond to parents, but a perceived formal punishment has no significant control effect. It is revealed that internet ethics is a main control factor in buffering the effects of causal factors in cyber bullying.
