  • As seen in the case of the Boeing 737 Max accident, the proportion of aircraft software is rapidly increasing. However, it is vulnerable to safety issues. In case of domestic aircraft software, to operate a Light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (LUAV) less than an empty weight of 150 kg, safety certification is required for an Ultra-Light Vehicle (ULV). However, software certification procedure is not included. Since the use of LUAVs has increased recently, software verification is required. This paper proposed a checklist of LUAV software that could be applied to LUAV referring DO-178C, an aviation software certification standard. A case study of applying the proposed checklist to the Model-based Development-based Helicopter Flight Control Computer (FCC) project currently used by domestic and foreign advanced companies and institutions was conducted.

  • Contrails are line-shaped clouds formed by the condensation of water vapor from the interaction of exhaust gas from aircraft engines and the high-altitude atmosphere. Contrails are known to aggravate global warming by creating a greenhouse effect by absorbing or reflecting radiation emitted from the Earth. In this study, development of a model that can quantitatively predict the contrail occurrence was conducted for the reduction of contrail, which is likely to form an aircraft certification category in the future. Based on prior research results, a model that can predict the occurrence of contrail between Tokyo and Qingdao was developed, in addition to proposing improved flight altitude that can minimize the occurrence of contrail.

  • Flight compatibility certification is performed to substantiate the compatibility between ALQ-X ECM pod and KF-16D/RF-4C aircraft. A certification plan for the ALQ-X flight compatibility is established. Similarity analysis, mass/inertia analysis, structural analysis/test, and ground vibration test/flutter analysis are made to support the safety of MIL-HDBK-1763 Test 250 (Captive compatibility flight profile). Aircraft flew along flight envelope boundary with representative ALQ-X configurations. Handling qualities are evaluated by comparing flight characteristics of the aircraft with and without ALQ-X. Structural integrity and endurance is evaluated using measured flight test data. Results of these flight tests showed that ALQ-X is compatible with KF-16D/RF-4C without altering the flight envelope which has originally been certified for ALQ-88 and ALQ-119 ECM pods. ALQ-X certification program made following technical achievements: Type III certification for foreign designed fighter, flutter analysis program development using GVT results, and utilization of MIL-STD-1553B data bus in flight test.

  • In this paper, a multipactor test for the space qualification model of the X-band dual-mode high-power channel filter for high-speed data transmission of geostationary satellite observation payloads was conducted and compared with the 8 dB margin required for design. It was confirmed that analytically required margins were met through testing and that satisfactory test results were obtained. The design and test of the multipactor are tested according to the ECSS standard. Based on this, it is suggested that if the margin of design is sufficiently secured, it can be used in the development of the filter for space qualification model without any test.

  • This paper discusses the results of launch environment tests for the engineering qualification model (EQM) of nanosatellite Scale magNetospheric and Ionospheric Plasma Experiment (SNIPE) for scientific missions and lessons learned for the design of nanosatellites. SNIPE is a group of four formation-flying 6U nanosatellites with a range of payloads for missions including space weather measurement. We developed the EQM to verify the preliminary design prior to fabricating the flight model. Launch environment test of EQM was conducted for the first time in 2019, and all failures were corrected and verified at the second test conducted in 2021. A notable point of the two tests is that the nanosatellite deployer used in the first test is different from that of the second test. The second deployer has the capability to fix the internal satellite whereas the first deployer just contains and deploys the satellite. Thus actual mechanical loads the satellite receives is reduced for the second test compared to the first test. This work compares the mechanical responses of two tests and proposes general guidelines for structural design of nanosatellites.

  • Recent progress in analysis and flight simulation methods enables wider use of a virtual certification and reduces number of certification flight tests. Aerodynamic database (AeroDB) is one of the most important components for the flight simulation. It is composed of aerodynamic coefficients at a range of flight conditions and control deflections. This paper proposes and efficient method for construction of AeroDB that combines Gaussian Process based Variable Fidelity Modeling with adaptive sampling algorithm. A case study of virtual certification of a F-16 fighter is presented. Four AeroDB were constructed using different number and distribution of high-fidelity data points. The constructed database is then used to simulate gliding, short pitch, and roll response. Compliance with certification regulations is then checked. The case study demonstrates that the proposed method can significantly reduce number of high-fidelity data points while maintaining high accuracy of the simulation.

  • A certain level of stability margin airworthiness criteria should be met to secure robustness against uncertainties between the real plant and the model in a flight control system design. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) specification of MIL-F-9490D and airworthiness certification standard of MIL-HDBK-516B uses gain and phase margin criteria of flight control system. However, the same stability margin criteria is applied at all development phases without considering the design maturity of each development phase of the aircraft. Ultimately, a problem arises when the aircraft operation envelope is excessively restricted. This paper proposes the relation of handling qualities and stability margin, and presents re-established stability margin criteria as a development phases and verification methods. The results of the research study are considered to contribute to the verification of the stability margin criteria more flexibly and effectively by applying the method to not only the currently manned developing aircrafts but also the unmanned vehicle to be developed in the future.

  • By using commercial flight simulation game engine, X-Plane, we have studied QTG(Qualification Test Guide) generation that can satisfy FTD level 5. Flight model is SR-20 of Cirrus. In list of QTG, There are some items to measure control forces. therefore, we have installed CLS(Control Loading System) to flight control devices in order to make it possible to measure control forces. We made Autopilot function externally to make flight model in trim conditions because X-Plane don't provide internal trim routine function. In addition to develop an algorithm, it can automatically perform the test. To avoid the inconvenience to control as it was to be carried out in same conditions. In case of FTD level 5, it is possible to use alternative data sources not only real flight data. By using these alternative data sources, all test results satisfy a scope given by CFR Part 60.
