  • A new peanut variety "Pungsan" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2007. It was derived from a cross between a short stem cultivar "Satonoka" and a high-yielding local cultivar "Yecheon". "Pungsan" is the Virginia plant type. It has 18 branches per plant and 40 cm of main stem height. Each pod with long-ellipse shaped large kernel has two grains with light-brown testa and 100 seed weight was 95g in the regional yield trials (RYT). "Pungsan" showed more resistant to web blotch compared with check variety. In the regional yield trials "Pungsan" was outyielded in grain yield to the check variety by 16% with 4.45 MT/ha for grain.

  • A new peanut cultivar "Jopyeong" (Arachis hypogaea ssp. hypogaea L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2006. It was developed from the cross between the very short stem cultivar "CUP brittle" and the high-yielding cultivar "Daekwang". "Jopyeong" which is Virginia plant type has 23 branch number per plant with early maturing and ellipse-shaped large kernel. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 87g in the regional yield trials (RYT). This variety also showed more resistant to late leaf spots compared with check one. Especially it has resistance to lodging owing to short stem and erect plant type. In the regional yield trials "Jopyeong" was out-yielded than check variety by 11% with 8.37 ton/ha for fresh pod and by 4% with 3.95 ton/ha for grain.

  • Peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the major oilseed crops. The peanut oil consists of palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids, which are present at levels of 10%, 36-67% and 15-43%, respectively. High oleate mutant of peanut F435 contains 80% oleate and as little as 2% linoleate in seed oil. Previous study indicated that delta 12 fatty acid desaturase is a major enzyme controlling the oleate content in seeds of oilseed crops. F435 sequence alignment of their coding regions disclosed that an extra A(adenine) was inserted at the position +2,823 bp of delta 12 fatty acid desaturase gene. This study was to develop molecular marker (SNP marker) co-segregating with the high oleate trait. Chopyeong ${\times}$ F435 $F_2$ 41 population were investigated using molecular marker and fatty acid assay (NIR and gas chromatography). Finally, this marker segregates Chopyeong type 26 lines, heterotype 9 lines and F435 type 6 lines. These results in our study suggested that SNP marker conform fatty acid assay.

It was originated from the cross between a pedigree of YCPL1824 as a female and SF9225-3-1 as a male parent in 1998. 'Anyu' can be characterized by purple flower color and brown grain color. 'Anyu' showed semi-dwarft type with 120 cm height, and has lodging tolerance. Maturing date of 'Anyu' was September 24, which is 15 days faster than that of 'Saeyeopsil'. The early maturity of this new cultivar showed a great advantage to various planting system with other crops. This new cultivar has high oil content (45%) and high linolenic acid in the fatty acid composition. The yield potential of 'Anyu' was about 0.9 ton/1ha in the regional yield trial.

Average stem length and the number of capsules per plant is 118 cm, 79 cm respectively. Its 1,000 grains weight is about 2.67 g indicating 0.10 g lower than that of 'Yangheuk', and its oil content is about 46.4%. 'Yunheuk' also contains total 2.59 mg/g of such lignans as sesamin and sesamolin. And its dark color density ($L^*$ Value) of seed coat is 22.43 which was about 10% lower than that of check variety. The average yield of 'Yunheuk' was 99.9 kg per 10a at the national-wide regional performance.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of high-oleate and normal-oleate peanut consumption on adipose mass and serum lipids in obese-induced C57BL/6J mice. After four weeks of the high-fat diet, mice were randomly divided into six groups: normal control (NC) diet, high-fat control (HFC) diet, high-oleate peanut-seed (HOPS) diet, normal-oleate peanut-seed (NOPS) diet, high-oleate peanut-oil (HOPO) diet, and olive-oil (OO) diet. After four weeks, all four experimental diet groups showed significantly lower body weight and epididymal fat weight than HFC group. In four experimental diet groups, serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly lower, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly higher than HFC group. TG was significantly decreased in HOPS group (92.1±1.2 mg/dL) than NOPS group (101.7±5.3 mg/dL, p<0.05). Similarly, LDL-C was significantly lower in HOPS group (66.1±2.8 mg/dL) than NOPS (76.9±1.5 mg/dL, p<0.05), on the other hand, HDL-C indicated a significant elevation in HOPS (50.5±2.1 mg/dL) than NOPS group (45.2±1.6 mg/dL, p<0.05). This result suggests that the consumption of high-oleate peanut has a favorable effect on the plasma lipid profile.
