  • This study aims to develop communication devices and interfaces to address the communication needs of the hearing impaired. Through three FGI (Focused Group Interview)s with deaf persons and sign-language interpreters, we studied the communication methods, devices, and needs of the deaf. On the basis of our analysis, we propose a communication framework to improve their means of communication with normal or other deaf persons. We have designed a communication system that is based on the proposed framework: this system suggests functions for remote sign-language interpretation services for conversations in close-range and over the phone. Details are presented regarding the design of interfaces for video calls, text messages, and digital memos, addressing the conversation patterns of the deaf. The system includes hardware form factors for video phones that facilitate sign language conversations and also mitigate other auditory problems in daily life, such as problems with door bells. The design concept has been verified through a test with six deaf users.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to present an analysis model in developing an inclusive response for safety hazards and disaster preventive information system for vulnerable people to the disaster including persons with disabilities, and those with specific needs. Methods : In this study, the persona analysis method is used to analyze fictitious characters that correspond to various characteristics such as age, disability, environment, occupation, etc. in terms of the scenario of some particular disaster subjects. Based on the user's communication problems derived from the persona analysis, focused group interview and ICF based analysis were implemented to identify needs and arbitration methods. Results : The needs from persona analysis and ICF-based communication items analysis identifies the factors that make each fictitious character difficult in terms of communication in obtaining the benefits consistent with the purpose of the service. The study derives service requirements that can provide arbitration or facilitation methods to increase communication ability of the users. Conclusion : Through the persona analysis method, difficulties that could occur when receiving disaster information using communication devices were identified and analyzed in conjunction with communication problems described in the ICF. In building information services for the prevention of safety hazards and disasters, this study presented a model that uses the persona analysis method and the ICF classification system to derive user requirements for accessible information system.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of an immersive virtual reality-based simulation learning program(IVR-SLP) on the communication competence and learning attitude of students with intellectual disabilities. To do this, 23 participants with intellectual disabilities were selected from 2 special schools. 11 students were placed in an experimental group and 12 students in a control group. An IVR-SLP, focusing on possible situations in a convenience store, was implemented within the experimental group and a traditional intervention program was implemented within the control group. The programs were conducted 5 times per week for 4 weeks and each session lasted approximately 40 minutes. Evaluations were carried out by using a pre- and post- test, and the results of the evaluation were analyzed using the independent t-test. The results of this study indicated that the communication competence of the experimental group showed greater improvement than that of the control group. In addition, the learning attitude of the experimental group became more positive than that of the control group. This implies that the immersive virtual reality-based simulation learning program can be a very effective tool for teaching language and communication skills to students with intellectual disabilities.

  • A communication is one of the most important factors for the human beings. Therefore, people who have some problems in communication need an Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) intervention to live in the human societies and several AAC systems have been developed to help the people. Lately, smart-phone is widely used to people as a communication device which can connect between persons. It can provide many useful methods and Apps to the user. If the AAC system is unified to the smart-phone, it is very effective device to the people with disabled because they can reduce the excessive expense and easily accommodate themselves to the AAC system. In this paper, an AAC program which is installed in the smart-phone or tablet PC is introduced. It has basic AAC solutions and can send SMS message to other people. We expect that the developed device can help the communication of the people with disabled and solve the social isolation of the disabled person.

  • The present study implemented AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) system using images that speech defectives can easily understand. In particular, the implementation was focused on the portability and mobility of the AAC system as well as communication system of a more flexible form. For mobility and portability, we implemented a system operable in mobile devices such as PDA so that speech defectives can communicate as food as ordinary People at any Place using the system Moreover, in order to overcome the limitation of storage space for a large volume of image data, we implemented the AAC system in client/server structure in mobile environment. What is more, for more flexible communication, we built an image dictionary by taking verbs as the base and sub-categorizing nouns according to their corresponding verbs, and regularized the types of sentences generated according to the type of verb, centering on verbs that play the most important role in composing a sentence.
