  • In this study, O/W and W/S emulsions were prepared by combining oils having different required hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) values under the diverse conditions of HLB values composed of a hydrophilic surfactant and a lipophilic surfactant and their stability was investigated. Results showed that the higher the viscosity of O/W emulsions was as the lower the HLB value of emulsifier and emulsion particle showed a tendency to be a smaller and compact and stabler in centrifugal filtration. W/S emulsions also showed a similar tendency to be a smaller and compact as HLB values of emulsifier was higher and stabler in centrifugal filtration. However, the viscosity of W/S emulsion tended to get lower in HLB conditions of all emulsifiers as the time passed. This indicated that the emulsions had an unstable feature in long-term stability. In conclusion, the results showed opposite to the known theory that O/W emulsion is proper to be applied by nonionic surfactant with a high HLB value and W/S emulsion to be applied by nonionic surfactant with a low HLB value and provide useful information for the cosmetics research and related areas.

  • Plasma proteins were obtained from bloods of slaughtered bovine and porcine and analyzed by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC). Serum albumin content decreased in the following order: Porcine Plasma Protein (PPP)> Bovine Plasma Protein (BPP)> Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC). Protein contents of BPP, PPP, and WPC determined by Kjeldahl method were 85.79%, 82.30%, and 84.38%, respectively. Compared to WPC, plasma proteins had higher emulsifying activity index (EAI) below 2% protein concentration and slightly lower EAI above 4% protein concentration. Plasma proteins had higher EAI in the acidic pH range and more dependence on NaCl than WPC. Also, EAI of plasma proteins with NaCl was higher in the acidic range than that of WPC. These results indicated that plasma protein can be utilized as a raw material for emulsifier.

  • Essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants possess various biological activities and have been considered as natural insecticides due to their potent insecticidal activities. In regard to develop natural insecticides, EOs are formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate and their acute toxicity against to fishes were determined in a static condition using Cyprinus carpio. Coriander EO was used as an active ingredient mixed with ethanol for solvent and various surface active agents. The tested EOs were obtained from a commercial market, and three different extractions were also undertaken to produce EO using steam distillation, solvent extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. Among the emulsifiable concentrate including a commercial coriander EO, surface active agents such as Tween 80, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and mixture of SDBS and Nonidet showed acute toxicity to the fish. With the three different EO extraction, coriander EO obtained from supercritical fluids with Triton X-100 exhibited acute toxicity to C. carpio. Taken together, Tetgitol and Nondet are considered as surface active agents for the emulsifiable formulation of coriander EO.

  • Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate/styrene pair were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator. The characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, where as polymer blonds or copolymers show a combined properties from the physical properties or two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in many industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected phenomina are observed, such as, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve the disadvantages, we studied the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the tore-shell structure or PMMA/PSt and PSt/PMMA. Particle size and particle size distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass transition temperature($T_g$) was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions were measured.

  • This study is a study on solubilization and emulsifying power of tocopheryl acetate using vegetable surfactants. High purity polyglyceryl-10 isostearate and polyglyceryl-10 oleate were mixed to synthesize a vegetable surfactant with excellent solubilizing power and emulsifying power. The mixed raw material was named Solubil EWG-1100. The appearance of this raw material was a pale yellowish paste with a specific smell, specific gravity of 1.12, and acid value of 0.085. The HLB value of this surfactant was calculated by the Griffin's equation with an average value of 15.17. The behavior of this surfactant to solubilize tocopheryl acetate was mechanically verified. The performance of solubilization was evaluated by a method of visual evaluation and was measured by a transmittance rate at 650 nm using a UV spectrophotometer. As a result, in the formulation using 3% ethanol as a co-solvent, the concentration of surfactant was required to solubilize tocopheryl acetate was required about 5 times of natural surfactant. In the formulation without ethanol as a co-solvent, the concentration of surfactant was required to solubilize tocopheryl acetate required about 7 times of natural surfactant. In addition, the concentration of surfactant required to make an emulsifivation 10 % of tocopheryl acetate was 1 wt% of Solubil EWG-1100, and the emulsified particle size was 3.5 mm in cream formula. In order to obtain stable and fine emulsified particles, it was found that as the concentration of tocopheryl acetate increased, the concentration of Solubil EWG-1100 also was to increase. As a result of testing the solubilizing power of the surfactant according to the pH various change, it showed stable solubilizing power in the acidic region of pH=3.2, the neutral region of pH=7.0, and the alkaline region of pH=11.8. As application, based on these results, it is expected that it can be widely applied to the cosmetics field that develops skin care prescriptions, sensitive skin products, and heavy dry skin products.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanoparticles were synthesized in oil/water miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of low amount of hexadecane as a cosurfactant. The nanoparticles were tested to apply as a drug carrier. The shape of nanoparticles was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the average particle size and size distribution were examined by particle size analyzer. Inclusion of antibiotic drugs into the nanoparticles was confirmed by CHO, C=O, and OH peak of FT-IR. Size of the nanoparticles were adjusted between 80∼300 nm by changing the homogenization rate and amount of cosurfactant and surfactant. The monomer droplets prepared by miniemulsion method using a cosurfactant were homogeneous and stable compared with those prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization. This might be occurred due to the prevention of Ostwald ripening and coalescence between droplets by using hexadecane as a cosurfactant.

  • In this research, organic extracts from roots of platycodon grandiflorum was tested to see the possibility for cosmetic natural surfactant. Interfacial properties of extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum was checked for interfacial tension, forming force, dispersion force, emulsion force, emulsion activity, and emulsion stability. At 0.005 wt% concentration, the interfacial tension against the caster oil was 11.5 dyn/cm which was lower than that of Tween 40 and quillaja bark. Extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum showed excellent emulsification activity and stability for cosmetic oils such as olive oil, soybean oil, and canola oil. In patch test using 2-5% of the extract and glycerin, the extract showed mild skin irritation. From the experiment, the extracts of platycodon grandiflorum root showed good interfacial properties as a cosmetic agent with minor skin irritation.

  • In this study, emulsion fuel which contained water of 10 ~ 20% was prepared mixed with water and MDO(Marine Diesel Oil) which largely used in near sea. Diffusion stability of emulsion fuel was measured. Diffusion stability was measured at 30℃, 45℃, and 60℃ for 10 days respectively. The stability of the emulsion fuel was stabilized in the order of MDO-10 > MDO-13 > MDO-16 > MDO-20 and it means that the stability of the emulsion fuel was found to be stable in the order of low water content. Meanwhile, an engine dynamo-meter was used to test whether the manufactured emulsion fuel was actually available in the engine. The emulsified MDO emulsion fuel could be used as fuel for ships. For samples with more than 16% water added emulsion fuel, smoke was reduced by more than 50% in the load area of more than 50%, and nitrogen oxides were reduced by 20%.
