Participants in this study on preschool children's ability to delay gratification were 132 4- to 5 year-old children and their mothers from 6 daycare centers. Mothers completed questionnaires reporting their parenting style, their child's ability to delay gratification, and child's temperament. Children participated in the real and hypothetical settings of the delay of gratification experiment. Data was analyzed by t-test, F-test, correlation and discrimination analysis. Results were that (1) 43% of preschoolers passed the delay of gratification experiment. (2) Older children were more able to delay gratification than younger children. (3) Children's rewards choices in the real setting correlated with their rewards choices in the hypothetical situation of delay of gratification. (4) Children's ability to delay gratification was influenced by their motor intelligence.
The purpose of this study was to investigate mothers' reactions to their children's negative emotions. The subject were 145 children(three to six-year-olds) and the instruments were Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale by Eisenberg(1992) and Temperament Rating Scale by Chun(1992). The main results were as follows; First, mothers, in general, used more positive reactions than negative reactions when their children showed negative emotions. Mothers' education, job, family type and income affected mothers' type of reactions to their children's negative emotions. Mothers' reactions to their children's negative reaction emotions were associated with their children's temperament but not with their children's age, sex and birth order.
Child's temperament, cognitive ability, social competence, mother's affective child rearing and positive expression, father's positive expression, and teacher's positive expression were the variables investigated in relation to the structure of children's emotional competence (EC). Subjects were 20 teachers and 236 five-year-old children and their parents. Data were analyzed by LISREL (Linear Structural Relations), a statistical program for structural equation modeling. Results showed that boys' social competence and mother's affective rearing behavior directly influenced the EC of boys; boys temperament and cognitive ability, and positive expressions of their teachers indirectly influenced the EC of boys. Girls' temperament and social competence directly influenced the EC of girls; their cognitive ability, mother's affective child rearing behavior, and positive expressions of mothers and fathers indirectly influenced the EC of girls.
This research investigated the moderating effects of children's negative emotionality, activity and sociability on the relation between maternal parenting stress and children's behavior problems. Participants consisted of 1,667 preschool children from the fifth wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. EAS was used to measure the children's temperament. Mothers reported parenting stress and children's behavior problems. The results revealed that the magnitude of association between relation between maternal parenting stress and children's behavior problems was greater for high levels of negative emotionality and activity as well as low levels of sociability. The results support a diathesis-stress model in which high negative emotionality, activity and low sociability confer vulnerability for preschool children in a high stress family.
In this study, I examined the direct or indirect paths among the intra-personal factors as well as extra-personal factors affecting on children's peer competence. Subjects were 514 5-year-old children, their mothers, teachers. The teachers rated each children using Peer Competence Scale (Park, 2001) and completed emotion regulation and Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. The mothers responded to a questionnaire, including Parental Involvement Checklist (Cohen, 1989), parenting behaviors, and Children's Temperament. The data were used for path analysis with Amos 6.0 program. Results of this study were : (1) Children's temperament have an influence on children's peer competence through children's emotion regulation via mothers' parenting behaviors. (2) Children's temperament have an influence on children's peer competence through teacher-child relationship. (3) Mothers' parenting behaviors have an influence on children's peer Competence through mothers' management strategies of peer relations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of young children's temperament, emotional intelligence, social behavior and mother's personality traits, and management strategy of peer relations on peer acceptance. Subjects were 412 5-years-old children and their mothers in Busan. The children responded to the Peer Nomination Inventory to assess peer acceptance and their teachers completed the EAS(Emotionality, Activity, Sociability), to assess the emotional intelligence and social behavior of the children. Mothers completed Eysenck Personality Questionnaire for personality traits and the Parental Involvement Checklist. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and simple and multiple regression analyses. The results showed that emotional intelligence of young children had a relatively significant effect on peer acceptance, followed by personality traits of mother's extraversion, the temperament of activity, and the management strategy of mediation-supervision. In conclusion, young children and their mother's variables have a complex, rather than simple, effect on peer acceptance of the children.
In present study, using 1572 low-income families and 266 Head Start teachers from Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) in the U.S., we examined the effects of mothers' reading and the characteristics of interaction between teacher-child interaction on 4-and 5-year-olds' cognitive development represented by their verbal and numerical abilities. Frequencies of mothers' reading at home consistently predicted higher scores of children's Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Woodcock Johnson Applied Problems. Teachers' sensitivity and permissiveness in their interactions with children in classroom were positively related to children's verbal abilities and teachers' sensitivity predicted better numerical abilities of children after controlling for mothers' reading and the characteristics of family and teacher. The findings shed light on the contributions of teacher behaviors and familial factors to children's cognitive development calling for attention to the need for parent education on cognitively stimulating family environments and continuing education for early childhood teachers focusing on quality interactions with young children.
The purpose of this study was (1) to investigate the difference of temperament, self-regulation, and problem behavior according to children's gender and age, (2) to investigate the relationship among three variables by use of canonical correlation analysis. The subjects were 210 children ages from 3 to 5 in five day-care center in Incheon city. The SPSS WIN 12.0 Program was used to analyze the collected data. The statistical methods were Frequency, Percentage, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Two-way ANOVA, Correlation analysis, and Canonical Correlation analysis. The major results of this research are summarized as follows: (1) Children's temperament were significantly different by their gender and age. The boys got higher score than girls in adaptability, activity, and total temperament. Girls got higher score than boys in reactivity. The age 3 got higher score than the age 5 in activity and the ages 3, 4 got higher than the age 5 in total temperament. (2) Children's self-regulation were significantly different by their age. The children who were older got higher scores in self-regulation ability. (3) Children's problems behavior were significantly different by their gender and age. The boys got higher score than girls in anxiety behavior, aggressive behavior, hyperactive/distractive behavior, and total problem behavior. And the ages 3, 4 got higher score than the age 5 in anxiety behavior and hyperactive/distractive behavior. The age 4 got higher score the ages 3, 5 in aggressive behavior and the age 3 got higher score the ages 4, 5 in total problem behavior. (4) Canonical correlation results showed that stable temperament and self-regulation were positively correlated and self-regulation and problem behavior were negatively correlated.
This study investigates how bioecological variables affect the child's multiple intelligence through independent and interactional ways. The subjects of this study were 147 pairs of 5-year-old children and their mothers, and the Project Spectrum was employed to measure multiple intelligences. Each mothers was asked to answer a questionnaire on her child's temperament, her maternal parenting style, 'goodness of fit' and 'the fit of child's intelligence'. Data were analyzed using a factor analysis and a hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS WIN 15.0. The main findings were as followings; First, 'the goodness of fit' to the child's temperament moderated the effect of a maternal parenting style that would foster child's dependency on the mathematical intelligence through interaction. 'The fit of child's intelligence' also moderated the effect of maternal positive parenting style to the child's mathematical intelligence. Second, in language intelligence, girls were more verbally intelligent than boys. In that regard, because the sex variable entails a combination of both inherent attribute and social-cultural effects, that result can be interpreted as an interaction between the individual and the environment. Lastly, a maternal parenting style that would foster child's dependency moderated the effect of the child's regular temperament on interpersonal intelligence. This means that the child's regular temperament can be a protective factor for the negative effect of a maternal parenting style that would foster child's dependency This study suggests that interactional factors such as 'goodness of fit' should be considered in studies involving children.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among young children's temperament, emotional regulation, and their mother's parenting stress. This study also analyzed the mediating effect of mother's parenting stress on the relationship between the other two variables. Methods: A total of 304 mothers with young children that lived in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo participated in this study. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and the Sobel test. Results: The main results are as follows. First, adaptability temperament was positively correlated with children's emotional regulation and negatively correlated with mother's parenting stress. There was no statistically significant relationship between activity temperament and other variables, whereas regularity temperament had only a significant relationship with emotional regulation. Second, it was found that mother's parenting stress partially mediated between children's adaptability temperament and emotional regulation. Conclusion: The results of this study imply that mother's parenting stress is a very important factor on young children's emotional regulation. Also, the present study suggests that children's adaptability temperament and mother's parenting stress should be considered together in order to improve young children's emotional regulation.
