  • In order to explore the impact of gender in the effects of age, temperament, and parenting on preschoolers' psychosocial problems, 339 preschoolers, 3-5 year old, were assessed using parent report measures of externalizing and internalizing behavior problems, temperament, and parenting. The results of ANOVA and hierarchical regression analyses are as follows. First, the main effects of age and gender for externalizing problems and the interaction effect of age and gender for internalizing problems were significant. Second, the important predictors of preschoolers' internalizing and externalizing problems were different by gender. In boys, Novelty Seeking(NS), Harm Avoidance(HA), and hostile parenting significantly predicted both problems. In girls, NS, HA, and warm parenting significantly predicted both problems. In addition, girls were more strongly influenced by parenting whereas boys were more influenced by their temperaments. The results of this study highlight some important suggestions for prevention strategies for preschoolers' behavioral problems. The implications and limitations of this study were further discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mothers' smartphone dependency(MSD) and their children's problem behavior and how children's smartphone dependency(CSD) mediates this relationship. A survey was conducted in the Seoul and Gyeonggi of 300 mothers having children from two to six years old. The results showed that MSD was directly related to both CSD and children's problem behavior, and in particular, had greater effects than CSD on children's problem behavior. CSD was found to mediate the relationship between MSD and children's problem behavior. The results suggest that mothers and their children should be provided with education on the proper usage of smartphone to prevent problem behavior in children, and that the development of preventive programs for smartphone addiction is needed.

  • Objective: This study examined the relationships among sleep problems, executive function and social behavior during the preschool period. In addition, the mediating role of executive function between sleep problems and social behavior was investigated. Methods: A total of 304 preschool children participated in this study. The data were collected through maternal reports. Results: First, preschoolers' sleep problems were found to be significantly related to overt aggression and prosocial behavior. Second, preschoolers with sleep problems displayed lower levels of executive function. Third, preschoolers' executive function was significantly associated with social behavior. Lastly, preschoolers' executive function fully mediated the relationship between sleep problems and overt aggression, and between sleep problems and prosocial behavior. That is, preschoolers' sleep problems had effects on overt aggression and prosocial behavior, only through the effects on executive function. Conclusion: This study contributes to the sleep literature by examining the role of executive function and emphasizes the importance of forming a healthy sleep habit during the preschool period.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify developmental trajectories of externalizing problems in preschoolers and to investigate dimensions of temperament and parental behaviors associated with trajectory groups. Subjects were 180 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers (96 males, 84 females) in the metropolitan area of Seoul. They were assessed three times at 5 month intervals over a one year period. Teachers reported on children's behavior problems, and parents reported on children's temperaments. Latent Growth Curve Modeling Analysis with cohort sequential design revealed externalizing behaviors gradually decreased between 3 and 6. At the 6-year-old level externalizing behaviors were associated with high novelty seeking temperament. The results were discussed in terms of the importance of longitudinal research in developmental psychopathology.

The subjects of this study were 368 mothers whose young children were 3 to 5years old and attending to 3 private kindergartens and 2 child-care centers located in Chunkbuk. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Primary factor analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, t-test, F-test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression, using the SPSS 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follows: First, young children's self control partially mediated when mother's affectionate parenting affected young children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. Second, young children's self control partially mediated when mother's psychological control affected young children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. Third, young children's self control did not show a mediating effect on the relationship between mother's behavioral control and young children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. In conclusion, young children's internalization of mother's psychological control and behavioral control as well as affectionate parenting have its effect on problem behaviors.

The subjects of this study was 210 mothers who lived in Korea. The results of this study were as follows: First, No significant statistical difference was found on the parental modernity of mothers by children's sex. Second, No significant statistical difference was found on parenting stress of mothers by the level of education of mothers but significant statistical difference was found on parenting stress by the level of parental modernity. Third, the more mothers had the level of education, the more mothers had parental modernity. Fourth, more children had misbehavior, the more mothers had parenting stress, Fifth, the more mothers had the parental modernity, the less mothers had parenting stress. These results suggest that the parenting stress was effected by both parenting modernity and children's misbehavior but also it was much relevant to children's misbehavior than parenting modernity.

  • The purpose of this study was to describe preschoolers' perceptions of fear from their own perspective. Qualitative data from 213 preschoolers 4 to 6 years of age were obtained by semi-structured interviews. The fear inventory was analyzed by content analysis and frequency. The most common fears of preschoolers in this study were fear of ferocious animals and imaginary figures, such as tigers, lions, snakes, spirits and ghosts. Fear of ghosts was the primary fear of both boys and girls. Results showed that most fears were caused by disgust-related visual images. Worry about injury and pain was another common pathway to fear. At-risk preschoolers scored significantly higher than normal preschoolers on fears of criticism and getting an injection.
