Appearance Satisfaction and School Adjustment in Nursing Students: Mediating Effect of Self-esteem and Moderating Effect of Gender (간호대학생의 외모만족과 학교생활적응: 자아존중감의 매개효과와 성별의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment of nursing students. The role of self-esteem and gender in the relationship between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment were also examined. A descriptive correlational design was adopted and the convenience sample consisted of 188 undergraduate nursing students in D city. It was found that appearance satisfaction affected directly and indirectly through self-esteem on school adjustment. The results indicated that self-esteem had partial mediation effects in the relationship between appearance satisfaction and school adjustment. Moderation effect of gender was found only in the relationship between appearance satisfaction and self-esteem. This meant that women were affected more than men according to the level of appearance satisfaction. The results suggested that the intervention program to support nursing students to accept themselves more positively and to enhance their self-esteem will be effective to help nursing students adjust themselves more to school life. It was also indicated in this study that specialized intervention programs are needed for women.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of body appearance satisfaction(BAS) and the self-esteem on the obesity stress(OS). A survey sample drawn from the total of 664 middle school students(324 of females and 340 of males) were analyzed with the suggested conceptual model by employing the latent variables such as BAS and OS. By using the AMOS statistical program, we found that the conceptual model fitted well with the data set and paths in the model significantly predicted the OS. The middle schoolers' BAS had significant direct effects on the OS and self-esteem as well as a indirect effect via self-esteem on the OS. Self-esteem had a significant direct effect on the OS which was larger than the total effects from BAS on OS. Therefore, self-esteem could be buffered the negative influences from the BAS on the OS.

  • This study attempted to verify the influence of appearance satisfaction on interest in eye makeup and makeup care behavior in female consumers and provide basic data which are needed to plan marketing strategies and develop cosmetics in the cosmetics market. For this, a questionnaire survey was performed against adult women in their 20-50s from the capital region. A total of 399 copies were used for final analysis, and the results found the followings: First, differences were found in appearance satisfaction, interest in eye makeup and makeup care behavior by general characteristics. In other words, interest in eye makeup started with 'self-care', showing interest in chasing a trend. Second, concerning the effects of appearance satisfaction on interest in eye makeup, as the respondents were more satisfied with their facial contour, they were more interested in eye makeup. Third, in terms of the influence of appearance satisfaction on eye makeup care behavior, as they were more satisfied with their skin conditions, trend-setting makeup care behavior increased. Consequently, increase in appearance satisfaction enhanced interest in eye makeup, having an influence on makeup care behavior.

  • This study thus set out to analyze relations among appearance satisfaction, social competence, and interpersonal abilities and provide basic data to improve interpersonal abilities. For these purposes, the study collected data with a questionnaire and analyzed total 223 questionnaires. We collected the data from December 3 to 7, 2018. The study analyzed relations among social competence, interpersonal abilities, and appearance satisfaction and found that social competence had positive correlations with interpersonal abilities and appearance satisfaction, which indicates that higher social competence leads to better interpersonal relationships and higher appearance satisfaction.

The Appearance Satisfaction according to Parents' Appearance-related Parenting Style and Undergraduate Children's Self-esteem (부모의 외모관련 양육유형과 대학생 자녀의 자기존중감에 따른 외모만족도)

  • This study examined the effects of parents' appearance-related parenting styles on children's adolescence and self-esteem by examining university students' appearance satisfaction. The results generated 3 different appearance-related parenting styles for fathers: indifference type (45.5%), conservative regulation type (32.0%) and appearance-pursuing type (22.5%), and three for mothers: opinion-respecting type (39.5%), conservative regulation type (32.6%) and appearance-pursuing type (27.9%). In addition, when the influence of parenting styles were compared based on children's self-esteem and their appearance satisfaction, male students' appearance satisfaction was affected more by their self-esteem than by parents' parenting styles. In comparison, female students' appearance satisfaction was influenced by parents' parenting styles. Specifically, appearance satisfaction and body satisfaction were high when the mother respected the children's opinions, and body satisfaction was rather low when the father was of appearance-pursuing. This result shows that parents need to respect their children's opinions on their appearance and guide them to find their own individuality in order to enhance the children's appearance satisfaction and self-esteem.

  • The objective of this research is to find out the effect of service provider nonverbal attributes on customer evaluation in service recovery stage. Results showed that first, the better kinesics of service provider, the more satisfaction in service recovery stage. Second, the better service providers have physical appearance, the more revisit intention. But both the kinesics and physical appearance have not an effect on recommendation intention. This paper discussed theoretical and practical focusing on nonverbal attributes of service providers.

  • The purpose of this research was to understand the relations between the satisfaction of appearance and self-esteem and to prove mediating effect of interpersonal experience in that relation. The 239 subjects were selected from 118, 121 of male and female high school students in Seongnam. The research tools were Body Esteem Scale, the Self-Esteem Inventory and Relationship Scale. The Result of study were sa follows. First, appearance satisfaction, experience of relation and self-esteem had correlations in each relation. Second, Interpersonal experience would demonstrate self-esteem, and partial mediating effect was generated in the relations between appearance satisfaction and self-esteem. Especially, partial mediating effect was male student was higher. Based on these results, it was discussed the positive effects of positive interpersonal experiences on self-esteem for adolescents with low self-esteem due to low level of physical satisfaction and the direction of youth coaching.

  • This study examined whether any differences were found in body comparison, body satisfaction, and appearance management behaviors according to socialcultural attitudes toward appearance among male and female adolescents in Gwangju and Jeolla province. It was conducted by a self-report survey of 598 male and female students in eigth and eleventh grades in Gwangju and Jeonnam province, South Korea. The collected survey data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Factor analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, K-means cluster analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's grouping using SPSS/PC WIN 19.0 statical program. The results were as the following: Adolescents perceived and internalized more highly than the common level the socialcultural value toward appearance, especially for female, and by age, juniors in high school than in middle school. Socialcultural attitudes toward appearance could be classified into four categories: 'Accepted type', 'internal type', 'aware type', and 'unaccepted type'. Students who were classified as 'accepted type', and 'internal type' showed lower level of body satisfaction and compared their bodies more often with others. They also actively received appearance management behaviors. Therefore, they showed positive attitude toward cosmetic surgery and functional garments. They also worked hard to reduce their weights just to show off to others. In conclusion, it is necessary for education programs to protect self-esteem of adolescents from the socialcultural distortion to appearance.

The Effect of Appearance Satisfaction, Interpersonal Relationships on Life Satisfaction of Middle-Aged People (중장년의 외모 만족도, 대인관계가 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data to increase life satisfaction of middle-aged people by verifying the influence relationship between appearance satisfaction and life satisfaction and the mediating effect of interpersonal relationships. The subjects of the survey were middle-aged people aged 50 to 64, and data were collected through online and offline surveys for 10 days from August 15, 2021, focusing on the metropolitan area. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, PROCESS MACRO Model Number 4, and Bootstrapping were conducted using statistical programs SPSS WIN 25.0 and PROCESS MACRO. The results of the study showed that first, the appearance satisfaction of the middle-aged had a positive (+) effect on life satisfaction. Second, interpersonal relationships had a partial mediating effect. Based on the results, it is meaningful in that it presented practical and policy suggestions that can increase appearance satisfaction and interpersonal relationships in improving life satisfaction of middle-aged people.
