  • This study focused on the classification of triangles by angles in elementary school mathematics. We examined Korean national mathematics curriculum from the past to the present. We also examined foreign textbooks and the Euclid's . As a result, it showed that the classification is not indispensable from the mathematical and the perceptual viewpoint. It is rather useful for students to know the names of triangles when studying upper level mathematics in middle and high schools. This study also suggested that the classification be introduced in elementary school mathematics in the context of reasoning and inquiring as shown foreign textbooks, and example topics for the reasoning and inquiring.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends of mathematics textbooks to provide implications for future textbook research. For this purpose, 123 research papers related to mathematics textbooks, published in seven professional domestic journals during recent five years, were selected. The papers dealing with Korean mathematics textbooks were analyzed by school levels (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school), mathematics content areas, analytic methods, and implications. The results of this study showed that many studies analyzed elementary mathematics textbooks, specifically in the content strand of number and operations. The frequent analytic foci were given to content areas along with mathematical rigor or the development of alternative mathematics textbooks. In comparison with the previous research trend, there was an increasing number of studies in which detailed implications or ways of re-constructing mathematical topics were discussed on the basis of thorough analysis of textbooks. This study also included an analysis of papers comparing Korean mathematics textbooks with foreign counterparts or analyzing foreign mathematics textbooks to elicit implications for Korean mathematics textbooks in terms of reasons of the comparison, school levels, and analytic foci. This paper closes with implications for textbook research.

  • Numerical data of the geological time scale in Earth Science I, II textbooks and those of University textbooks of Korea and other countries are briefly reviewed. Numerical data of the geologic time scale shown in Earth Science I, II textbooks are mostly out of date and many of them follow those in the University textbooks of Korea. The same situation is apparent for introductory Earth Science or Geology textbooks of other countries as old data exist in their text books as well. There are many new data in the International Stratigraphic Chart (ISC 2000) and International Geologic Time Scale (IGTS 2003) recently updated by International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and A Geologic Time Scale (GTS 2004). Among the new data, some important things are Paleogene and Neogene Periods of Cenozoic Era, Mississippian and Pensilvanian Epochs of Carborniferous Period, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic Eras of Proterozoic Eon, and Eoarchean, Paleoarchean, Mesoarchean, and Neoarchean Eras of Archean Eon. These new data should be used in the new Earth Science textbooks.

  • In this study, I compared and analyzed the contents of Korean, Japanese, Singapore, American, and Finnish textbooks about fraction which is one of the important and difficult concepts in elementary school mathematics. This is aimed to get the implications for meaningful fractional teaching and learning by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the methods and time of introducing the concept because fraction has the diversity of the sub-concepts and the introducing methods or process. As a result of the analysis, the fraction was introduced as part-whole(area) in all five countries' textbooks, but the use of number line, conversion between improper fraction and mixed number, whether to deal with part-whole(set) model. Furthermore, there are differences in the methods in obtaining of the equivalent fraction and the order of arrangement in comparison of fraction. Through this analysis, we discussed the reconsideration of the introducing contexts of fractions, the use of number line when introducing fractions, and the problem of segmentation and classification of contents.

  • In this note we examined some terms, parallel lines and angles in elementary school mathematics and middle school mathematics respectively. Since some terms are represented early in elementary school mathematics and not repeated after, some students are not easy to apply the terms to their lesson. Also, since the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated intuitively in 7-th grade, applying the relation for a proof in 8-th grade would be meaningless. For the variety of mathematics education, it is desirable that the relation between parallel lines and angles are treated as postulate. Also, for out standing students, it is desirable that we use deductive reasoning to prove the relation between parallel lines and angles as a theorem. In particular, the treatments of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles in 7-th grade text books must be reconsidered. Proof is very important in mathematics, and the deductive reasoning is necessary for proof. It would be efficient if some properties such as congruence of vertical angles and the relation between parallel lines and angles are dealt in 8-th grade for proof.

  • In this study, we investigated how the relationship between 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines is stated in mathematics textbooks of the 2007 revised national curriculum. In school mathematics, 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines are explicitly distinguished in the perspective of 'coincidence', whereas 'identical' lines are implicitly regarded as a special case of 'parallel' in the perspective of 'slope'. These different treatments could bring out a confusion as was in the mock mathematics test for 2012 College Scholastic Ability Test. To resolve this confusion, it needs to be considered that the relationship between 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines are more clearly stated in the context of 'slope' such as in some textbooks for the 4th and 5th curriculum and a textbook of Japan.

  • This study analyzes the Textbook of Home Economics published by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom(玄公廉)' that was the first textbook approved by the Korean Government and also disapproved by the Japanese Government. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. The Korean Government appointed the textbooks used in school. The textbooks of home economics appointed in 1910 were 'Hanmun Gajeonghak(漢文家政學)' and 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak(新編家政學)'. But Japanese government disapproved these textbooks soon after it fully controlled Korea. 2. 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' who published the textbook of home economics was from translator family that was famous since early Chosun Dynasty. The translator at that time with good command of foreign language introduced foreign books to the intellectuals of Chosun Dynasty. The textbook of home economics was also translated at that time. 3. 'Hanmun Gajeonghak', 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak' and 'Sinjeong Gajeonghak(新政家政學)' published by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' were the translations of the same book. 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' published the 'Hanmun Gajeonghak' written in Chinese character and 'Sinpyeon Gajeonghak' written in Korean and Chinese character in combination in December 1907, which were translations of the textbook of home economics published by 'Oh Yeo Ryoon(吳汝綸)' in China in July 1902. The textbook of 'Oh Yeo Ryoon' was the Chinese translation of the 'Sinseon Gajeonghak (新選家政學)' that was published by 'Shimoda Utako(下田歌子), in Japan in 1900. 4. The textbook of home economics written by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' was composed of five units, that is, general introduction, management of family members, family norms, family hygiene and home economy. The composition of the book by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' was quite different from that of 'Sinseon Gajeonghak' by 'Shimoda Utako'. This difference was made in the textbook of home economics of 'Oh Yeo Ryoon'. 5. The characteristics of home in the textbook of home economics by 'Hyun Kong-Ryeom' were summarized as follows. (1)Home as a national basic unit. (2)Home for education, (3)Home for rest, (4)Home for the consumption.

  • This study was to analyze the related contents by securing 32 volumes of 8 types of physical education textbooks for grades 3, 4, 5, 6 that are being used in the school field for the revitalization of dance education. As a result, the 3rd grade expression area organized textbooks focusing on movement language and expression elements. For the 4th grade, most textbooks suggested gymnastics using balls, hoops, and ribbons. In the 5th grade, Ganggangsullae and Mask dance were suggested in relation to Korean folk dances, and Tinikling and Gustaf's skoal suggested in relation to foreign folk dances. had been In the case of 6th graders, the exploration of expression elements and the expression process were presented in relation to thematic expression, and the subject expression was made possible with a focus on creative gymnastics. Also, line dance among practical dances was presented in most textbooks. Despite the importance of the expression domain, field teachers at school are complaining of difficulties in teaching and learning due to various internal and external problems. The need for activation is raised in that the expression domain can exert effects in all cognitive, mental, and affective domains.
