  • In times when identity-principles dominate through culture-industry, it appears to be the idea of the perfect identity-knowledge which Hegel had required for philosophy to become true. By being produced, cultures, according to the principle of production for production itself, became commodities which can be exchanged in the market. So what cannot be exchanged in the market is excluded as worthless and useless. As culture-industry gets rid of room for the new and the experience of it, the experience of what is new became impossible. In such degrees the consciousness is reificated, and the freedom as autonomy becomes an empty concept. But if there is not the freedom of will, conscious thought will not be possible, and human beings will degenerate into a simple species. Nevertheless, freedom which becomes meaningless in reality is an essential element for a human being to be human, so in the times when consciousness is reificated by means of the culture-industry, as the autonomous art awakens a reificated consciousness, it will be the antidote of a reificated consciousness which makes free thought and action possible. In this sense, this study will try to justify the aesthetic experience as shudder through the experience of what cannot be exchanged that becomes possible with critics regarding the constructive imperfection of identity-knowledge. Then it will argue that the aesthetic experience as shudder makes the autonomous art possible.

  • Despite a copious volume of work on the relationship between social class and cultural consumption, scholars have paid scant attention to the increasingly apparent observation that a vast majority of the population exhibits indifference toward fine arts regardless of one's socio-economic status. Much of the prior literature on cultural consumption has treated the public's indifference to fine arts not as a distinct analytical category that deserves an explanation of its own, but simply as the opposite of "likes" or the act of consumption, let alone being disentangled from the concept of "dislikes" in taste-formation and consumption behavior. In this paper, we suggest that the seemingly increasing trend toward indifference to fine arts, especially among those who are part of the well-educated and economically well-off, merits close scholarly attention on its own term. As an initial step toward this endeavor, we explore the factors behind indifference toward fine arts among Korean middle-class, using the ground theory method. Our interview findings reveal that much of indifference toward fine arts is attributable to the lack of tastes in fine arts and artistic competence. Our results suggest that research drawing on Bourdieu's theory and Peterson's omnivore hypothesis needs to be further revised through an in-depth investigation of the institutional and societal contexts where art education takes place in Korea. We discuss the implications of our findings for policy-making in the cultural and artistic sphere.

  • Today, the Korean wave headed by K-pop is newly named as 'New Korean Wave' in that it has been extended to United States, Europe and Russia. K-POP, the main player of the new Korean wave, has been successful in SNS marketing channels. Furthermore, the content of K-pop has attracted the attention of the global audience. The media and public attention on the Korean Wave is meaningful because it is not merely a cultural export. It also makes Korean people feel national pride, seeing the mental influence of its culture on other regions. Moreover, the development of the cultural industry in our society, which is different from industrial or material development, is a proof that Korean society is at the center of globalization. Until the 20th century, Korean culture had been rather receptive than dominant. In other words, it was focused more on acceptance of other cultures than active creation or outflow of its own. Now, however, K-POP is not anymore copying Western culture. It is creating its own unique characters, which makes K-pop very competitive. Korean culture has been formed for a long time in Korea's unique historical background. Korean popular culture also has to establish a solid foothold in world markets through its distinctive and traditional feature. The positive consumer response to Korean pop culture will create the added value of Korean contents and their derivatives, which will heighten Korea's national image also. In other words, if traditional art and K-POP are converged and equipped with our own unique and highly artistic culture, they will take the lead in the global cultural art market. In this study, we will recognize the possibility, growth and development of K-pop culture and analyze the cases of combining K-pop and Korean traditional art. First, we have to blend traditional art and other various genres to create diverse contents, and we have to actively utilize media channels. Second, we must improve people's awareness of the copyrights of traditional art. Also, we have to mitigate the copyrights of creative dance to expand the disclosure of contents which can be utilized. Third, we have to learn about traditional arts from younger age. Fourth, we will expand traditional arts to the whole of Korean cultural policies, which can enhance the nation's cultural value and create economic benefits. These four are expected to be effective ways to preserve the identity of traditional art and at the same time, globalize Korean culture.

  • This study aims to understand the process of valuing contemporary artworks by young and emerging artists via online art platforms. This paper conceptualizes Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, which theoretically guides us for conducting a case study of Saatchi Art. This article mainly collected data by interviewing seven Korean artists who were selected by our case with the supplement information carried out direct observation and document reviews. By analyzing the gathered data, the key finding of this research is that the selection of artists in Saatchi Art's curatorial program implicitly admits and guarantees the value of their artworks. By doing so, it contributes to building symbolic capital for the selected artists. This article also contends that such construction of the artists' symbolic capital results from the accumulated symbolic capitals of the founder and curator of the online platform. The theoretical contribution of this paper is to expand previous research on valuing artworks in the offline art world into the online one.

  • This study focuses on the emergence of "hobby-preneurs" and the ways in which they are transforming the virtuous cycle of arts and cultural ecology. The hobby-preneur pursues and expands his or her favorite hobby into a professional job and/or arts business. Hobby-preneurs are the new driving force in the arts and cultural industry. Their activities enhance the arts as a public good even as they build valuable social capital for arts organizations and have a profound impact on supply and demand in the arts and cultural marketplace. Thus we found that by injecting and potentiating certain values that professional artists cannot directly deliver to arts consumers, hobby-preneurs function as major intermediaries in the virtuous cycle of arts and cultural ecology. To understand more about these emergent actors we examine their personal, social, and economic values and how these values guide their arts-related activities and thereby impact the ecology of the arts and cultural sector. In this study we use a phenomenological approach to investigate five hobby-preneurs and the particular ways their acquisition of professionalism is transforming the arts education node of the virtuous cycle in the creative sector.

'Free market', as a place for transactions for art products produced by artists or prospective artists, is held regularly every Saturday in front of Hongik university. This study collected data through in-depth interviews with participants and participant observations at the market to analyze the success factors of 'Free Market'. We described development process, unique characteristics of 'Free Market' and new experiential values that the market provide to the participants. This free market was introduced as roadside stand in the middle of 1990s when some artists started selling their works. It passed through the growth stage after it staged the event that had mixed characteristics of 'flee market' and 'art market' at local festivals in 2001. In 2002 Sin-Chon culture forum directedculture-oriented market and the market has been developed as a current 'Free Market'. Recently 'Free Market' is comprised of steps, artists, and customers who voluntarily participated in the market. The market is held regularly every Saturday and provide various types of programs for the participants. Major characteristics of this free market were summarized as 'complex space' and 'role transition', and these characteristics provided the participants new experiential values such as 'freedom', 'emergent experiences', 'social interaction' and 'hero of festivals' through the participant role. We interpret that 'Free Market' has been successfully settled down as a new type of retail store based on these new experiential values. • Not only the consumption trend after the COVID-19 pandemic but also low financial interest rates have stimulated people to invest artworks. With the recent noticeable growth, art investments that mainly conducted by younger generation through online platform can be characterized by a fractional ownership in art market which means several people share one piece of artwork. This study explores 4 fractional ownership platforms in the domestic art market including Art Together, Art & Guide, Tessa, and Pica projects, using a business model canvas that describes nine key elements: Customer Segments, Value Proposition, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partners and Cost Structure. The four cases have similar business models, but the details of revenue streams are different. The key sources of revenue are the profit and commission of the work. Thus, maximizing the profit margin of artworks is the core of revenue streams, so selecting and purchasing highly profitable artworks are significant. Based on the analysis, there are 3 suggestions to continue fractional ownership platform businesses in art market successfully. First, it is required to have a long-term perspective on art investments, as a way to diverse asset portfolio. Second, business confidence should be increased to maintain customer loyalty. Third, the role of platforms as competent experts is important.

  • The size of the domestic art market has increased 21.9% over the past five years as of 2018 to KRW 448.2 billion and the number of transactions has also increased 31.6% to 39,367 points maintaining growth for the fifth consecutive year. Art distribution platforms are diversifying from galleries and auction-style offline to online auctions. The art market consists of three areas: production (creation), distribution (trade), and consumption (buying) of works and as the perception of artistic value as well as economic value spreads interest is also increasing as a means of investment. Consumers who purchase works and think of them as a means of investment technology have an increased need for objective information about their works, but there is a limit to collecting and analyzing objective and reliable statistics because information provision in the art market distribution area is closed and unbalanced. This paper identifies objective and reliable art distribution status and status through big data collection and structured and unstructured data analysis on art market distribution areas. Through this, we want to implement a system that can objectively provide analysis of authors in the current market. This study collected author information from art distribution sites and calculated the frequency of associated words by writer by collecting and analyzing the author's articles from Maeil Business, a daily newspaper. It aims to provide consumers with objective and reliable information.
