  • In this study, the researcher developed a course integrated mathematical problem posing activities in order to enhance pre-service mathematics teachers' ability to carry out problem posing activities in mathematics classroom, and examined the changes of pre-service mathematics teachers' perceptions about problem posing through the course. The problem posing course developed in this study consisted of three stages: education on the theories regarding problem posing; activities with problem posing; development and implementation of problem posing tasks. According to the results of the questionnaires, interviews, and class journals data analysis, the problem posing experiences provided in this study were very effective in improving pre-service mathematics teachers' understanding of the problem posing strategies and the benefit of problem posing activities to student learning. Particularly, the experience in various problem posing activities and the implementation experience of problem posing provided in the course played a key role in the improvement of pre-service mathematics teachers' understanding of problem posing and PCK.

  • There is enthusiasm among many mathematics educators to seek to understand how history of mathematics can be employed to emphasize the usefulness of mathematics and to make it even more useful. We investigate theoretical backgrounds of using history of mathematics for secondary students and prospective mathematics teachers. On the basis of historico-genetic principle and mathematics teachers' professional knowledge, we go into curriculum of prospective mathematics teachers. This study focussed on developing pedagogical approach using history of mathematics for prospective mathematics teachers.

  • In this research, we designed an educational activities of exploring mathematics programs in a course of mathematics education in teacher's college. We divided future mathematics teachers into 8 groups and suggested 8 mathematics programs to them. Each group explored one mathematics program. We asked to future mathematics teachers exploring some cases that use effectively a mathematics program in the teaching of school mathematics. In the process of an exploring, we designed some activities of teaching and learning. We provided opportunities of long-term exploration, group learning, presentations, exercises, reflections to mathematics teachers. As a result, future mathematics teachers acquired basic knowledge on the usage of mathematics programs in school mathematics textbook. In addition, their capabilities that are needed to explore mathematics programs have been enhanced. Also they had learned the teacher's positive attitude through the activities of teaching and learning.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how the Lakatos method works in the elementary teacher education program. Elementary preservice teachers were given a task in which they examined the Pick's theorem. The finding revealed that Lakatos method was usable in the elementary teacher education. They produced initial conjecture and found counterexamples, and finally made improved conjectures. These experience encourage them to change their belief of teaching and learning mathematics and to find alternative ways of teaching mathematics.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of mentoring experience in STEAM classes on pre-service mathematics teachers' teaching competency for STEAM education. The study was conducted with 23 pre-service mathematics teachers who participated in the mentoring program affiliated with free learning semester system during one semester. To investigate the changes of pre-service mathematics teachers' teaching competencies for STEAM education and the effects of the mentoring program, pre, post questionnaires, lesson journals, and whole group discussion data were collected. According to the results, pre-service mathematics teachers' competencies for 'knowledge of STEAM education', 'subject matter knowledge', 'teaching and learning methods', and 'learning environments and circumstances' categories were improved significantly after the mentoring program. Especially, some results indicated that pre-service mathematics teachers' teaching experiences in real STEAM classrooms were very helpful for the development of understandings of STEAM education and construction of practical knowledge.

  • This study aims to provide answers to two questions regarding the supervision of pre-service mathematics teachers: 'Who should carry out the work of supervision?' and 'How can it most skillfully be done?' The answer to the first question seems to be that, for a variety of reasons, university teachers and mentors appear best suited to do the supervision in a cooperative relationship with pre-service teachers. The assumption that seems to underlie the collaborative supervision is that field-based experiences are necessary and useful components of professional development in pre-service teacher preparation programs. With respect to the second question, it is suggested that a non-judgemental approach should be considered, along with strategies and techniques for judgemental supervision, as a way to make math teacher supervision more meaningful and helpful for the improvement of teaching and long-term professional development. It is hoped that a continued exploration of models of teacher supervision and evaluation of their effectiveness will help pre-service math teachers, supervisors and mentors learn more about teaching and improve their own teaching.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how pre-service teachers perceive mathematics problems by making good mathematics problems at the elementary school level and applying them to elementary school students. In this study, 86 pre-service teachers enrolled in the second and third grades of A University of Education presented good mathematics problems they thought of. In addition, these pre-service teachers predicted the solution strategies of elementary school students for the proposed mathematics problem and described the teacher's expertise while observing the problem-solving process of elementary school students. As a result of the study, pre-service teachers preferred mathematical problems needed for using mathematical concepts or algorithms, motivation, and open-ended problems as good mathematics problems, and thought that students' in-depth observation and analysis experiences could help improve teachers' problem-solving expertise. In order to enhance teachers' expertise in solving mathematics problems, the researcher proposed for pre-service teachers to observe students' mathematics problem-solving processes, to experience in developing high-quality mathematics problems, and also to distribute high-quality mathematics problems linked to textbook problems.

  • This study examined elementary pre-service teachers' (PSTs') perceived preparedness of high-leverage practices (HLPs) in mathematics teaching. Eighty-one elementary PSTs who enrolled in four sections of an elementary mathematics methods course at a Midwestern University in the United States participated in a survey that inquired their self-reported confidence and competence levels on HLPs. This study specifically investigated the comparison between PSTs' perceptions of HLPs and the mathematics teacher educators' expectations. Findings show several glaring differences between the PSTs' perceptions and experts' perceptions in regards to the complexity of some HLPs. This study suggests that initial teacher training programs should include more specific investment in PSTs' insights into details of each teaching practice in mathematics by deliberate decompositions.
