  • In order to find out pollutants in leaves of pinus thunbergii, and relationship between pollutants in soil and leaves of pinus thunbergii surrounding Onsan Industrial Complex in Korea, this study was performed. Concentrations of water-soluble sulfur of P. thunbergii leaves were a range of 0.06%-0.25%, but at the vicinity of industrial complex, it was judged to be hindered in growing trees as a range of 0.13%-0.25%. In P. thunbergii leaves the contents of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were showed as a range of 87.2 ppm-319.8 ppm, 100.0 ppm-581.3 ppm, 39.0 ppm-134.0 ppm and 1.2 ppm-4.8 ppm, respectively, and they were generally high at P. thunbergii leaves of the vicinity of refinery of industrial complex. But concentrations of Cu and Pb only showed little contents. In the correlation between soil and leaves pollutants, there were significant correlation between total S and water-soluble S(r=$643^{\ast}$), between Fe(r=$0.681^{\ast}$), Zn(r=$0.832^{{\ast}{\ast}}$)), and Cd(r=$0.775^{{\ast}{\ast}}$) in soils and those in P. thunbergii leaves at 10% or 5% level, respectively, and as these results, it was inferrec that heavy metals in soils had relations with those in leaves.

  • By way of paper chromatography, free sugars in pycnial drops of Gymnosporangium haraeanum Sydow were investigated in regard of their biochemical interrelation with free sugars of Chinese juniper and pear leaf. The free sugar in pycnial drops of Gynnosporangium haraeanum Sydow were identified to only Fructose spot. Free sugars in Chinese juniper leaf were identified to Glucose. Galactose and two unknown spots. Free sugars of another sample in pear leaf were identified to spots of Glucose, Furctose and Galactose. The Arbutin from pear leaf was crystalized and its structure was identified to Glucose and Hydroquinone. The acetone powder of Emulsin was incubated for 1 hour at $40^{\circ}C$ with 0.05 M Arbutin substrate in test tube and purified by general method with the purpose of analysis of its. metabolic products. And the paper chromatographic analysis showed it to be Glucose spot. From the above results, this Fructose in pycinal drops of Gymnosporangium haraeanum Sydow is presumed to be the exchangeable from free sugars in pear leaf or to be the hydrolyzed of $\beta-glycoside$ (Arbutin)-the metabolic isomerization of Glucose into Fructose by pycnia isomerase.

  • Under the different conditions of planting density and nitrogen level with aromatic tobacco, some agronomic characters of tobacco like plant height, leaf size, LAI, yield and price were investigated in view of aroma volatile acid contents, the main compounds contributing to the aroma of oriental leaf tobacco. The closer a spacing interval became, the smaller the growth of plant and the leaf size with increment of yields, until about 22,000 plants per 10 are. But the leaf size became smaller without increment of yield when the planting density became more than 22,000 plants per 10 are. There were definite trends toward increase in leaf size, LAI and yield with increase in nitrogen rate. Correlation coefficient between aroma volatile and plant height, largest leaf length, one leaf area was -0.49, -0.49 and -0.47, respectively, showing significance at 1 % level. But LAI (r=-0.14) and dry weight of unit leaf area(r=0.25) was not observed to be significantly associated with aroma volatile, respectively. The results suggest that closer spacing is desirable for smaller leaves, higher contents of aroma volatile and for increased yield.

  • Five barley varieties were compared under six 1evels of nitrogen fertilization and two methods of cultural management, conventional and drill seeding. The increase in grain yield and nitrogen content of the leaves showed a significant linear regression from added increaments of nitrogen in Haganemugi and Olbori, particulary under drill seeding. The other varieties resulted in various degrees of lodging and no significant increases in yield. The spike number per square meter was the major component of yield, but when the spike number per square meter was sufficient, 1000 grain weight was equally as important as a component of yield.

  • To reduce leaf nitrate content, lettuce plants(Lactuca sativa var. capitata) were grown in deep flow culture. Nitrogen concentrations were controlled to 1 (6.Sme/$\ell$), 3/4 (4.9me/$\ell$), 2/4 (3.3me/$\ell$), and 1/4 strength(1.6me/$\ell$) of Yamaziki's nutrient solution from 7 days before harvest. The pH of nutrient solution was maintained at high level between 7.2 and 8.4. The values of pH and EC were increased with the nitrogen concentration in the nutrient solution. The nitrate contents were lowest at the treatment of 1/4 strength, but not significantly different among other treatments. The nitrate content was lower in outer leaves than in head leaves. The weight and diameter of head and shoot weight were lowest at the treatment of 1/4 strength.

  • A full understanding of the interdependence of leaf nitrate (($No_3$ ̄) metabolism and symbiotic nitrogen($N_2$) fixation in legume crops is needed to help maximize the use of both N sources as well as to improve forage quality through the inhibition of leaf nitrate accumulation. The present work examines the effects of added nitrate, the level of which are 0,2,4,8 and 12mM, on the nodule formation and leaf nitrate utilization and on the possibility of inducing nitrate-toxicity to livestocks in two alfalfa varieties, ' Vernal ' of grazing type and ' Victoria ' of hay type. Higher level of exogeneous nitrate resulted in the increased above-ground dry weight. Nodulation was inhibited severely when more than 8mM NO$_3$ ̄ was supplied to alfalfa plants, and leaf nitrate reductase reached a maximunm at 4mM nitrate supply. The $V_{max}$of nitrate reductase in leaves of Vernal was similar to that of Victoria, whereas the $K_m$ of Vernal was higher than that of Victoria. High accumulation of leaf nitrate, $4{\times}10^{-5}$ g/g leaf fresh weight, was shown at 12mM nitrate supply, which was thought to be not enough to induce nitrate-toxicity to livestocks.icity to livestocks.

  • Characteristics of vegetative spur leaf, spur bud, fruiting supr leaf and flowering in relation to canopy position was investigated on order to promote better spur bud and flower bud differentiation on Citrus junos. There was no difference in vegetative spur leaf characteristics among directions. Vegetative spur leaf number and leaf area showed no difference between top and bottom position. There was no difference in spur bud size among directions, but spur bud at top was larger than that at bottom. Specific leaf weight of vegetative spur was mostly influenced by light interception, and leaf dry weight per spur average leaf dry weight, spur bud length and diameter had also a very high correlation with light interception rate. Shading and GA treatment in spur bud and flower bud differentiation was ineffective than natural light. Fruit thinning enhanced fruit quality as well as flower bud differentiation through an increase of leaf number per fruit, over 40 in Citrus junos.
