  • Porosity in polymer matrix composites increases rapidly during thermochemical decomposition at high temperatures. The generation of pores reduces elastic moduli and failure strengths of composite materials, and gas pressures in internal pores influence thermomechanical behaviors. In this paper, micromechanical finite element analysis is carried out by using two-dimensional representative volume elements for unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites with porous matrix. According to the state of the pores, effective elastic moduli, poroelastic parameters and failure strengths of the overall composites are investigated in detail. In particular, it is confirmed that the failure strengths in the transvers and through-thickness directions are predicted much more weakly than the strength of nonpored matrix, and decrease consistently as the porosity of matrix increases.

  • This paper analyzed the effects of the concentration of nano-silica particles contained in epoxy resin on the thermomechanical properties of the composite materials. The 12nm sized nanoparticles were mixed with epoxy polymer by 5 different weight ratios for the test samples. The glass transition temperature, stress relaxation, and thermal expansion behaviors were measured using dymanic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and thermomechanical analyzer (TMA). It was shown that the nano particle mixing ratios had significant influences on the viscoelastic behaviors of the materials. As the content of the silica particles was increased, the elastic modulus was also increased, while the glass transition temperatures were decreased. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results played an important role in determining the causes of the property changes by the filler contents in terms of the molecular structures, enabling the interpretations on the material behaviors based on the chemical structure changes.

  • This paper deals with cyclic stress and strain responses during isothermal low cycle fatigue (LCF) and thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) loadings on Nb and Mo containing 15Cr stainless steel, which is used for exhaust manifolds in automobiles. The test temperatures ($T_{i}$) of the isothermal LCF were 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. The minimum temperature of the TMF test was $100^{\circ}C$ and the maximum temperaures ($T_{p}$) were varied between 500 and $800^{\circ}C$. In both loading conditions, weak cyclic softening is observed at $T_{i}=T_{p}=800^{\circ}C$, but the transition to strong cyclic hardening is completed with the temperature decrease below $T_i=600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ for LCF and $T_{p}=500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$ for TMF. The stress-strain hysteresis loops in the TMF loading show a significant stress relaxation during compressive (heating) half cycle at $T_{p}>500^{\circ}C$, which develops tensile mean stress during cycling. Due to the stress relaxation, the TMF test sample reveals much lower dislocation density than the isothermally fatigued sample at the same temperature with $T_{p}$. A detailed correlation between fatigue microstructure and cycling deformation behavior is discussed.

  • Crosslinked polyimides (PIs) were synthesized by reacting 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB) with various ratios of the cross-linkable, end-capping agent cis-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (CDBA) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Residual stress behaviors were investigated in-situ during thermal imidization of the crosslinked PI precursors using a thin film stress analyzer (TFSA) by wafer bending method. The thermal properties were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The optical properties were measured by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and spectrophotometry. All properties were interpreted with respect to their morphology of crosslinked networks. With increasing the amounts of the end-capping agent, the residual stress decreased from 27.9 to -1.3 MPa, exhibited ultra-low stress and high thermal properties. The minimized residual stress and enhanced thermal properties of the crosslinked PI makes them potential candidates for versatile high-density multi-layer structure applications.

  • Although many researches have been made on the adsorption of cationic starches onto chemical pulp fibers, only limited studies have been reported for deinked pulp(DIP) and thermomechanical pulpI(TMP). In this experiment, the adsorption behavior of the cationic starches onto DIP and TMP fibers investigated. Almost complete adsorption of cationic starches onto the pulp fibers were observed when the addition rate of starch was low. Adsorption ratio decreased abruptly when 3.5% and 4.0% of cationic starches were adsorbed onto deinked pulp and thermomechanical pulp, respectively. Adsorption of cationic starches increased as the degree of substitution decreased and as the pH of the pulp slurry increased. TMP fibers adsorbed more cationic starches than DIP because of its greater charge density, and this led to greater improvement in strength properties for the TMP sheets.

  • Porosity in polymer matrix composites generated during pyrolysis process affect the thermomechanical behavior of the composites. In this paper, multislice finite element models for the porous composite materials are developed, and poroelastic and failure analysis for these models are performed. In order to investigate the three-dimensional effects, finite element meshes are modeled considering different porosity(up to 0.5) and the number of slices (up to five). As a result, effective Young's moduli and poroelastic parameters exhibit the maximum differences of 74.0% and 442.1% with respect to porosity respectively, and 98.7% and 37.2% with respect to the number of slices. First and last failure strengths are decreased 88.2% and 90.0% with respect to porosity respectively, and 53.8% and 171.8% with respect to the number of slices.

  • In this work the mechanical behaviors of GaN nanowires are analyzed during tension, compression, and unloading deformations. The thermal conductivity of the nanowires at each deformed state is evaluated using an equilibrium Green-Kubo approach. Under tensile loading, the [0001]-oriented nanowires with hexagonal cross-sections undergo a phase transformation from wurtzite to a tetragonal structure. The phase transformation is not observed under compressive loading. The thermal conductivity decreases on going from compressive strains to tensile strains. The strain dependence of the thermal conductivity results from the relaxation time of phonon. A reverse transformation from the tetragonal structure to the wurtzite structure is observed during unloading. The thermal conductivities in the intermediate states are lower than the conductivity in the wurtzite structure at same strain. Such differences in the thermal conductivity between different atomic structures are mainly due to changes in the group velocity of phonon.

  • The out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue (OP TMF) in a <001> oriented single crystal nickel-based superalloy CMSX-4 has been studied. OP TMF life was less than a half of low cycle fatigue(LCF) life in spite of a small hysteresis loop area of OP TMF compared to that of LCF. The failure was caused by the initiation of a crack at the oxide-layered surface followed by its planar growth along the <100> ${\gamma}$ channel in both LCF and OP TMF. However, deformation twins appeared near the major crack of OP TMF. The multiple groups of parallel twin plates on {111} planes provided a preferential path for crack propagation, which caused a significant decrease in OP TMF life. Additionally, the analysis on the surface crack morphology revealed that the tensile strain at the minimum temperature of OP TMF was found to accelerate the crack propagation.

  • In the present work, the effect of electron beam irradiation on the chemical and thermal characteristics of cellulose-based jute fibers was explored by means of chemical analysis, electron spin resonance analysis, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and thermomechanical analysis. Jute fiber bundles were uniformly irradiated in the range of 2~100 kGy by a continuous method using a conveyor cartin an electron beam tunnel. Electron beam treatment, which is a physical approach to change the surfaces, more or less changed the chemical composition of jute fibers. It was also found that the radicals on the jute fibers can be increasingly formed with increasing electron beam intensity. However, the electron beam irradiation did not change significantly the chemical functional groups existing on the jute fiber surfaces. The electron beam irradiation influenced the thermal stability and thermal shrinkage/expansion behavior and the behavior depended on the electron beam intensity.

  • The thermal and mechanical properties and morphology of epoxy/polyamide/DDS/2E4MZ-CNS reactive blends with various amounts of polyamide were investigated. The amount of polyamide was 10, 20, and 30 phr and 2 phr of catalyst was added to the blend to cure at $180^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. By adding the catalyst, 2E4MZ-CNS, to the blend, the cure reaction occurred at a lower temperature. From the SEM images, it was found that the boundary of separated-phase was unclear and the phase was co-continuous. Without the catalyst, however, the boundary of separated-phase was clear. The control of cure temperature and morphology could be achieved by using a proper catalyst and consequently the mechanical strength increased by 20% compared to the blend without the catalyst due to the strong interaction between epoxy matrix and phase-separated polyamide at the interface.
