In this study, the resistance test, the vertical static angle of the attack test and VPMM test will be conducted to estimate the maneuverability of underwater vehicles with ahead propeller. The vertical static test will be conducted within the range of -40deg to 40deg, to investigate the cross-flow drag at high incidence angles. The tests will be conducted by dividing the propeller rotation into a case in which the propeller rotates at a specific rpm, and a case in which the propeller rotates naturally, according to the towing speed. Hydrodynamic coefficients of vertical direction will be estimated by the captive model tests. Additionally, the vertical dynamic stability index based on estimated hydrodynamic coefficients will be calculated and the impact of the propeller revolution state on the index will be investigated. The results are expected to be used as reference test data for underwater vehicles with ahead propeller.

The purpose of this study was to investigate middle school and science-gifted students' conceptions about motion of objects on the surface of the earth and the moon. The subjects were 61 first-, 51 second-, 51 third-year students, for a total of 163 in a middle school and 32 science-gifted students from a university-affiliated sciencegifted education center for secondary school students. The research contents were conceptions about motion of objects by the vertical direction, an inclined plane and horizontal plane on the surface of the earth and the moon. The questions were as follows: If two balls, same size but different mass, were put on, thrown over, by the vertical direction, an inclined plane and a horizontal plane on the surface of the earth and the moon at the same time and speed, which one would arrive faster than the other?; In the same mass in the earth and the moon, how fast could the object reach to which location, the earth or the moon? The results showed that science-gifted students offer meaningful difference on the concept of objects in motion at the vertical direction, an inclined plane and a horizontal plane on the earth and at the vertical direction on the moon than general middle school students. There were meaningful difference on the vertical up direction, an inclined plane and a horizontal plane in the same situation in the earth and the moon. Finally, based on the results of our study, we discuss possible educational implications for teaching the concept of objects in motion.
In these days, the world has been increasing the development of various underwater vehicles such as ROVs (Remotely operated underwater vehicles) and AUVs (Autonomous underwater vehicles). And the importance of submarine's maneuverability is especially being emphasized. Therefore, accurate values of the derivatives in equations of motion are required to control motion of the submarines. The aims of the present study are to experimentally derive Hydrodynamic derivatives derived by the vertical planar motion mechanism (VPMM) model test, and to estimate vertical dynamic stability was estimated by using the linear hydrodynamic derivatives, the hydrodynamic derivatives of the submarine, which have a high propriety, were provided by using the fourier analysis of measured forces and moments. Furthermore it is confirmed that the experimental derivatives shows well agreement with the theoretical estimations, and the dynamic stability of the submarine was estimated as a good state, which implies that the value is greater than zero.

Any object located in the earth's gravitational field experiences a force in the direction of the center of the earth. In order to describe the motion of objects in the field, the solutions to a system of simultaneous vector kinematic equations need to be obtained. In the analysis of freely-falling objects, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the downward direction. In the analysis of the motion of objects thrown upward, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the upward direction. In the analysis of the motion of objects thrown downward, the reference direction +y is usually defined to be the downward direction. In this paper, we show that the choice of reference axis in either upward or direction gives the same results by adopting a scalar product of two vectors in solving the vector kinematic equations. It is rare to find other examples of using a scalar product of two vectors in solving vector kinematic equations describing the motion of objects. An application of this study is that we can arbitrarily choose the reference direction for objects moving in a horizontal direction, including projectile motions.

It is well known that when a high-speed planing craft travels in following seas it experiences long-periodic motions due to low encounter frequency, and it often loses its course keeping stability. Therefore, it is necessary to study the sea-keeping performance and stability of it in the following seas. In this paper, the vertical motions of a planing craft were measured in following regular waves, and the test results were compared with the theoretical results. In the case of the same encounter frequency, non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes become larger as Froude number is higher, and non-dimensionalized motion amplitudes in head waves are larger than those in following waves. The mean values of the motions in following waves are similar to the running attitudes of a craft in calm water at the same Froude number.

The friction factor equation of open channel flow is developed by using Prandtl's mixing length theory and considering the flow characteristics of smooth or rough turbulent flow. BYO model considers vertical velocity profile for the (:omputation of bottom friction of surface waves and current flow. The model computes the mean bottom friction of combined wave-current flow by the vectorial summation of wave velocity and current velocity at Bijker point. The near bottom flow is discriminated by three flow regimes; smooth, transitional and rough turbulent flow. The model, BYO, has been further refined considering the combination of smooth turbulent flow and rough turbulent flow.

The submerged body near the free surface is disturbed by the 1st and 2nd order wave forces, which results in unstable movements when no control is applied. In this paper, the vertical motions of the submerged body are analyzed, and the time-variant nonlinear system for the vertical motions of the submerged body is transformed to the time-invariant linear system in state space. Next, depth controller of the submerged body is designed by using LQR control, one of the modern optimal control technique. Numerical simulation shows that effective depth controls can be achieved by LQR control.
In order to predict the motions of a planing hull in waves, it is necessary to accurately estimate the force components acting on the hull such as the hydrodynamic force, buoyancy, and friction, as well as the wave exciting force. In particular, based on strip theory, hydrodynamic forces can be estimated by the summation of the forces acting on each cross-section of the hull. A non-linear strip method for planing hulls was mathematically developed by Zarnick, and his formula has been used to predict the vertical motions of prismatic planing hulls in regular waves. In this study, several improvements were added to Zarnick's formula to predict the vertical motions of warped planing hulls. Based on calm water model test results, the buoyancy force and moment correction coefficients were modified. Further improvements were made in the pile-up correction. Pile-up correction factors were changed according to variations of the deadrise angles using the results found in previous research. Using the same hull form, captive model tests were carried out in other recent research, and the results were compared with the present calculation results. The comparison showed reasonably good agreements between the model tests and present calculations.

The running attitude of a high-speed planing craft may change significantly depending on its speed in seaway. Other variables that may influence its running attitude are its weight, center of gravity, sea conditions, and so on. In this paper, planing craft model tests were carried out with respect to above variables in SNU towing tank, and vertical motion responses of a planing craft in regular head waves were analyzed. The experimental results in regular waves were compared with those in calm water, and compared with the theoretical estimations. Finally, the effects of running speeds of a planing craft on its motion amplitudes are confirmed.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate the near-wake characteristics of a NACA 0018 foil with a flat plate. Two-frame grey-level cross correlation PIV method is used to measure the local flow characteristic around a pitch damping foil to control the vertical motion of high speed crafts in a circulating water channel. The analysis also includes angles of attack 10 and 20 degrees respectively. Reynolds number $Re{\fallingdotseq}3.5{\times}10^4$ based on the chord length(C=100mm) of NACA0018 has been applied during the whole experiments. The distance between the foil and the flat plate is D/C=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 respectively. The channel effect according as the distance between the foil and the flat plate has a close relation with the velocity distributions around the foil. In the wake of 20-degree of attack, the complex turbulent flow and a thick boundary layer are formed due to the processes of vortex generation and dissipation.
