  • This study was carried out to improve the performance of pre-developed heat recovery devices attached to exhaust-gas flue connected to combustion chamber of greenhouse heating system. Four different units were compared in the aspect of heat recovery performance; A-, B-, and C-types are exactly the same with the old ones reported in previous studies. D-type newly developed in this experiment is mainly different with the old ones in its heat exchange area and tube thickness. But airflow direction(U-turn) and pipe arrangement are similar with previous three types. The results are summarized as follows; 1. System performances in the aspect of heat recovery efficiency were estimated as 42.2% for A-type, 40.6% for B-type, 54.4% for C-type, and 69.2% for D-type. 2. There was not significant improvement of heat recovering efficiency between two different airflow directions inside the heat exchange system. But considering current technical conditions, straight air flow pattern has more advantage than hair-pin How pattern (U-turn f1ow). 3. The main factors influencing on heat recovery efficiency were presumably verified to be the total area of heat exchange surface, the thickness of ail-flow pipes, and the convective heat transfer coefficient influenced by airflow velocity under the conditions of allowable pipe durability and safety. 4. Desirable blower capacity for each type of heat recovery units were significantly different to each other. Therefore, the optimum airflow capacity should be determined by considering in economic aspect of electricity required together with the optimum heat recovery performance of given heat recovery systems.

  • Quantum chemical calculations are used to characterize the decomposition of nitrogenmonoxide over $Cu^{n+}$-Y zeolite. The method of theoretical calculations, such as CNDO/2, have been applied to cluster models representing cation sites in zeolite to obtain total energies, LUMO energies, and Wiberg bond orders. The calculated total energies and bond orders of cluster models showed the reaction mechanism of NO decomposition over $Cu^{n+}$ site in zeolite framework. The suggested cluster models of varying Si/Al ratios studied with exchange cations in the $Cu^+$ and in the $Cu^{2+}$ states. And the calculated LUMO energies can predict L acidifies of cluster models. The results from these experiments showed the possibility of the mechanism of NO decomposition, progressing adsorption of NO, conversion to $N_2$ and $O_2$, desorption of $N_2$ and $O_2$ in sequence. The L acidity of $Cu^{2+}$ ion in cation site is more strong than $Cu^+$.

  • Traditional cluster-based routing method is a representative method for increasing the energy efficiencies. In these cluster-based routing methods, the selected cluster head collect/aggregate the information and send the aggregated information to the base station. But they have to solve the unnecessary energy dissipation of frequent information exchange between the cluster head and whole member nodes in cluster. In this paper, we minimize the frequency of the information exchange for reducing the unnecessary transmit/receive frequencies as calculate the overlapped area or number of overlapped member nodes between the selected cluster head and previous cluster head in the setup phase. So, we propose the modified cluster selection protocol method that optimizes the energy dissipation in the setup phase and reuses the saved energy in the steady-state phase efficiently that prolongs the whole wireless sensor network lifetime by uniformly selecting the cluster head.

  • The energy slab is a ground coupled heat exchanger equipped in building slab structures, which represents a layout similar to the horizontal ground heat exchanger (GHEX). The energy slab is installed as one component of the floor slab layers in order to utilize the underground structure as a hybrid energy structure. However, as the energy slab is horizontally arranged, its thermal performance is inevitably less than the conventional vertical GHEXs. Therefore, stainless steel (STS) pipes are alternatively considered as a heat exchanger instead of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes in order to enhance thermal performance of GHEXs. Moreover, not only a floor slab but also a wall slab can be utilized as a heat-exchangeable energy slab in order to maximize the use of underground space effectively. In this paper, four field-scale energy slabs were constructed in a test bed, which consist of the STS and HDPE pipe, and a series of thermal response tests (TRTs) was conducted to evaluate relative heat exchange efficiency per unit pipe length according to the pipe material and the configuration of energy slabs. The energy slab equipped with the STS pipe shows higher thermal performance than the energy slab with the HDPE pipe. In addition, thermal performance of the wall-type energy slab is almost equivalent to the floor-type energy slab.

  • In general, bus system consumes a very significant portion of power in a chip. Bus splitting can be used to reduce the energy dissipation and to reduce the Propagation delay on the bus by lowering the parasitic load of each bus segment. Data exchange probability distribution between a set of interconnected processing elements affects the average energy dissipation of the splitted bus architectures. In this research, we have developed tree-based bus splitting techniques and design methodologies, as an extension of horizontally aligned bus splitting. We have developed the methodology to select near-optimal bus architectures for low energy dissipation when data exchange probability distribution of a system is given. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques can reduce energy dissipation on the bus by up to 83$\%$.

  • As unrenewable energy resources have depleted over the years, the demand for renewable energy has increased promoting research for more effective methods to produce renewable energy. The field of fuel cell development, specifically microbial fuel cells (MFCs), has developed because of the dual performance potential of the technology. MFCs convert power by facilitating electrode-reducing organisms such as bacteria (microbes) as a catalyst to produce electrical energy. MFCs use domestic and industrial wastewater as fuel to initiate the process, purifying the wastewater as a result. Proton exchange membranes (PEM) play a crucial role in MFCs as a separator between the anodes and cathodes chambers allowing only protons to effectively pass through. Nafion is the commercially used PEM for MFCs, but there are many setbacks: such as cost, production time, and less effective proton conductivity properties. In this review there will be largely two parts. Firstly, several newly developed PEM are discussed as possible replacements of Nafion. Secondly, MFC based on PEM, blended PEM and composite PEM are summarized.

  • The electrochemical performance of all vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) using an electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate and a cation exchange membrane (Nafion117) was evaluated. The electrochemical performance of VRFB was measured at a current density of 60 mA/cm2. The average current efficiency of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate was 94.9%, the average voltage efficiency was 82.2%, and the average energy efficiency was 78.0%. In addition, it was confirmed that the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate had almost the same value as the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared with vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4).

  • Recently, research on the development of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) has received considerable attention from the scientific community around the world. Here, we fabricated a series of AEMs with branched structures with different alkyl spacers and conducted comparative evaluations. The introduction of these branched structures is an attempt to overcome the low ionic conductivity and stability problems that AEMs are currently facing. To this end, branched polymers with different spacer lengths were synthesized and properties of each membrane prepared according to the branched structure were compared. The chemical structure of the polymer was investigated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, and gel permeation chromatography, and the thermal properties were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The branched anion exchange membrane with (CH2)3 and (CH2)6 spacers exhibited ionic conductivities of 8.9 mS cm-1 and 22 mS cm-1 at 90℃, respectively. This means that the length of the spacer affects the ionic conductivity. Therefore, this study showing the effect of the spacer length on the ionic conductivity of the membrane in the polymer structure constituting the ion exchange membrane is judged to be very useful for future application studies of AEM fuel cells.

  • In this study, anion exchange membranes were prepared by synthesizing the main chain into a poly(arylene ether) (PAE) structure, and the structures capable of improving the physical and chemical stability of the membrane by introducing a heterocyclic quaternary ammonium functional groups were studied. The chemical structure and thermal properties of the prepared polymer were confirmed by 1H-NMR, FT-IR, TGA, and DSC, and surface analysis was performed through AFM measurement. Additionally, dimensional stability and chemical properties was studied by measuring water uptake and swelling ratio, IEC and ionic conductivity. At 90℃, the quaternized poly(arylene ether) (QPAE)/1-methylpiperidine (MP) membrane exhibited the highest ionic conductivity of 27.2 mS cm-1, while the QPAE/1-methylimidazole (MI) membrane and QPAE/1-methylmorpholine (MM) membrane exhibited values of 14.5 mS cm-1 and 11.5 mS cm-1, respectively. In addition, the prepared anion exchange membrane exhibited high chemical stability in alkaline solution.

  • In general, ground's thermal properties, types of heat exchanger, operational method, thermal interference between piles can be considered as key factors which affect the thermal performance of energy pile. This study focused on the effect of these factors on the performance by a numerical model reflecting a real ground condition. Depending on the degree of saturation of ground, pile's heat transfer rate showed a maximum difference of three times, and the thermal resistance of pile made a maximum difference of 8.7%. As for the type of heat exchanger effects on thermal performance, thermal efficiency of 3U type energy pile had a higher value than those of W and U types. The periodic operation (8 hours operation, 16 hours pause) can preserve about 20% of heat efficiency compared to continuous operation, and hence it has an advantage of preventing the thermal accumulation phenomenon. Thermal interference effect in group piles may vary depending on the ground condition because the extent decreases as the ground condition varies from saturated to dry. The optimal separation distance that maintains the decreasing rate of heat efficiency less than 1% was suggested as 3.2D in U type, 3.6D in W type, and 3.7D in 3U type in a general ground condition.
