Purpose: This correlational study was performed to identify the impacts of maternal child rearing attitudes on the menstrual attitudes and the determinants of positive menstrual attitudes in female middle school students. Methods: With convenience sampling, 198 middle school female students were recruited living in one major city and its surrounding areas in Korea. Data was collected using a self administered questionnaire including menstrual attitudes and maternal child rearing attitudes from April 1 to July 15, 2008. Results: Among the Maternal child rearing attitudes, affectionate, achievement oriented and rational attitudes had positive correlations to a positive menstrual attitude, and an autonomous attitude had a negative correlation to a negative menstrual attitude. As determinants of positive menstrual attitudes, feeling of menarche, mother's response at first menstruation, and rational maternal child rearing attitudes were delineated and their explained variance for a positive menstrual attitude was 18.5%. There was no difference on menstrual attitudes by K clustering in terms of maternal child rearing attitudes. Conclusion: These results support the critical role of the mother. Especially desirable maternal child rearing attitudes in relation to a positive menstrual attitude would be affectionate, achievement oriented and rational for early adolescent girls. In further studies, considerations are needed for menstruation related education and research for early adolescents and active involvement of the mother & daughter together.
The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of foreign-born Korean children's early school adjustment in the U.S. The interaction between the foreign-born Korean children in the U.S. and several of the children's microsystems, including family, school, and peer was assessed to meet this purpose. The study subjects were 43 foreign-bom Korean children who were sampled from Korean Sunday Language schools and who attended local schools in the Boston area, MA, USA. Quantitative analysis was conducted to identify which variables of interest predicted the early adjustment of this group of children. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were conducted with mothers of the children from the top and bottom groups 1) the most successful (in the top quartile) and 2) the least successful adjustment groups (in the bottom quartile) sorted by scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R). The interview results were analyzed to elicit maternal perceptions/beliefs on education, in general, and those of home-school relationships, in specific. Several conclusions can be drawn from both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results of multiple regression and path analysis showed that the children's language development predicted their adjustment, but the effects of the other two variables, peer relationships and school experiences, on the adjustment of children, were mediated through the children's language. Moreover, common themes and patterns in the responses to a series of open-ended questions emerged from the interviews with the two groups of mothers. The two mothers of the least successful group were concerned about their children's future and school success, but thev did not show anv responsive attitudes toward achieving this goal. By contrast, the mothers from the most successful group were self-determined with regard to their children's education and had strong beliefs and values on how to raise their children in the new culture. The implications were discussed.
The relations of mothers' attitudes regarding maternal employment to mothers' psychological well-being, mothers' parenting sensitivity and children's social competence were examined for mothers who worked full-time (extensively) from age 6 months of their children on, mothers who were not employed, and mothers who worked part-time or inconsistently during their children's early years. Longitudinal observations of 1,034 mothers and children in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care from age one month to first grade were analyzed using structural equation models. As predicted, mothers and children benefited when maternal attitudes were consistent with mother's actual employment status. Among extensively employed mothers, those with positive attitudes about employment had better psychological well-being; among mothers who were not employed, those who believed that maternal employment would have negative consequences for children's development reported better psychological well-being. The findings suggested that whether the mother's status of employment is congruent with their beliefs, not whether the mother is working or not, predicted the mother's well-being and their child's social development.
Objective: The gold of this study is to identify the correlation between mothers' rejective parenting attitude and children's humanity and adaptation to educational institutions, as well as to find out whether children's humanity could act as a mediating effect against mothers' rejective parenting attitude in the process of children's adapting to the institutions. Methods: The study was conducted on 259 children aged 4 to 5 and their mothers. The collected data were used to conduct Pearson correlation coefficient, Three-step mediated regression analysis, and the Sobel test using the SPSS 20.0 program. Results: First, children's institutional adaptability had a significant negative correlation only with 'mother's hostility'. Children's humanity had a significant positive correlation with their institutional adaptability. Second, mothers' hostile attitude had a direct or indirect impact on children's institutional adaptability. Conclusion/Implications: The results above suggest that children's good humanity and parents' friendly attitude are important in children's institutional adaptability.
The study examined whether children's behavioral problem and self-resilience mediated the association between mothers' democratic parenting and their children's school life adjustment perceived by children. We analyzed data from the fourth Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS) that included democratic parenting, behavioral problem, self-resilience, and school life adjustment by 1,971 mothers and fourth grade elementary school children. We identified structural relationships among the variables using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 applying structural equation modeling. The measurement model and structure model had a favorable goodness of fit and the results of structure models on each path were as follows. First, school life adjustment had positive correlations with mother's democratic parenting and self-resilience, but there was a negative correlation between school life adjustment and behavioral problems. Second, the relationship between mother's democratic parenting and self-resilience was mediated by behavioral problems and behavioral problems; in addition, self-resilience mediated the relationship between mother's democratic parenting and school life adjustment. The results of this study suggested that children's school life adjustment and children's confidence to control behavioral problems could improve by promoting self-resilience. If fourth grade children could perceive mother's parenting as affection, monitoring children's behavioral problems could be reduced, and children's self-resilience and school life adjustment could be increased.
The purpose of this study was to analyze effects of the mother's child-rearing patterns on children's academic achievement with respects to ‘understanding of family and work’ area in Practical Arts Education related to the 7th revision on the Curriculum of the Elementary School. The questionnaire was used for the survey. The subjects were 200 mother-child (total of 400) randomly chosen from 4 elementary schools in Seoul. Data were analyzed by frequencies, percentages, averages, standard deviations, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-tests and one-way ANOVA's using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of this study were summarized as follows : The correlation between income in their home and their children's academic achievement did not analyze because of the omitting record in their questionnaire. The relations between the patterns of mother's child-rearing and children's academic achievement by children's sex and by grade were examined. But in this study, these relations scarcely have significant differences between the children's academic achievement and their mothers' child-rearing pattern except between being significant reject-sanctions type of mothers' child-rearing and the children's academic achievement. However, the child-rearing patterns of mothers which children and their mothers think were similar, then the high correlations were found between their patterns.
This study was performed to understand the depression of children with hearing impairment with relation to their mothers' nurturing attitude and sign language level. The subjects were 131 hearing impaired children aged from 9 to 16 years and their mothers, who had no hearing impairments. The children's depression was assessed by CDI(Kovacs 1983) adapted by Cho and Lee(1990), and the maternal attitude was measured through the instrument developed by Oh and Lee(1982) and revised by Lim(1987). The results were as follows. First, the girls' depression was higher than the boys', and children in a dormitory type of school showed higher depression than those in a general type of school. Second, children's depression did not show differences according to mother-child communication methods but differed according to mothers' sign language level. Children whose mothers had high level of sign language showed the highest depression and those whose mothers had beginning level of sign language showed the lowest depression. And mothers' affective, goal- achieving and rational attitude were negatively related with children's depression. Third, the depression of hearing impairment children was influenced mainly by the maternal affective attitude, and the next order was the type of school the children attend.

The purpose of this study was two folded. The first was to examine relationships among children's self-resilience, their mother's parenting style, family strength and the children's school adjustment and the second was to investigate the relative effects of the three variables on the children's school adjustment. To achieve the purposes, a total of 198 5th and 6th grade children and their mothers were surveyed on children's resilience scale, parenting style scale, family strength scale, and school adjustment scale. As a results, positive relationships among the four variables were observed. Also it was founded that children's self-resilience is the most effective, mothers' parenting style is the second, and family strength is the least factor on school adjustment. From the results the researchers suggested that early intervention is needed to enhance family strength as well as intervention to improve self-resilience in order to increase the children's school adjustment.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among perceived mothers'psychological control, affectionate-rational parenting and children's attributional style. The main and interaction effects of psychological control, affectionate-rational parenting on children's attributional style were also explored. Methods: The participants of this study were 253 children from elementary schools located in Seoul and Incheon. Data were analyzed through Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSS 22.0. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows. First, children's attributional style for negative events was positively associated with psychological control but negatively associated with affectionate-rational parenting. Moreover, attributional style for positive events was positively associated with only affectionate-rational parenting. Second, affectionate-rational parenting significantly influenced children's attributional style for both negative events and positive events. Finally, significant interaction effects of psychological control and affectionate-rational parenting on children's attributional style for negative events were observed. Conclusion/Implications: This study revealed that mothers' psychological control and affectionate-rational parenting are important factors in explaining children's attributional style. Such results could be used as an effective resource in developing parent education programs or intervention programs for attributional style.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare eating habits and parenting about eating habits of the elementary schoolers in two regions, Seoul and Gangwon-do, in order to understand regional differences. Methods: The respondents of this study included 365 pairs of children and their mothers (150 pairs from Seoul and 213 pairs from Gangwon-do). Data was collected using a structured questionnaire from July to August, 2013. Results: Perceived body type, weight control, and eating habits were significantly different in two regions. Children's eating habits were significantly different by their perception of health status and body type. Their mother's parenting attitude toward eating habits was significantly different by children's weight control and mother's and children's perception of body type. Parenting attitude toward eating habits was not different between two regions by their mothers. eating habits and parenting attitude toward eating habits were significantly correlated. Conclusions: Health provider should consider regional difference when designing health promotion program for elementary students. Especially, when practicing eating habits related program, parents should be participated from the planning stage and provided with the information of the proper body image and weight control.
