Effects of Heavy Metals on Amphibian Embryos, Tadpoles, and Adults (중금속이 양서류 배아, 유생 및 성체에 미치는 영향에 관한 소고)

  • Amphibian population declines globally. Environmental contamination by heavy metals has been suspected to the one of the reason for distinction of amphibian which has obligate aquatic life style during larval period. Amphibians have been widely accepted as animal model for the study of endocrine disruption in aquatic ecosystem at molecular as well as individual levels. There are increasing need for toxicological data in amphibians at multiple endpoints for management of contamination and development of safety guidelines. Here, we reviewed toxicological information about toxicity of heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, zinc) on various end-point of amphibian.

Amphibian Fauna in the Mt. Myungji (명지산 일대의 양서류)

  • Amphibian biodiversity, community structure and habitats were surveyed in the Mt. Myungji area from April 2002 to March 2003. During the survey period 2orders, 4 families, 7 species of amphibians were observed. Bombina orientalis (DI =45.1%) was dominant and Bufo stejnegeri (DI = 12.8%), Rana rugosa and Rana dybowskii (DI = 9.9% each) Rana nigromaculata and Rana huanrenensis (DI 1.4% each), and Onycodactylus fisheri (DI = 7.0%) followed. Frequency of occurrence of O. fisheri and B. stejnegeri was largely different according to the altitude and human residence in their habitats.R. nigromaculata and R. huanrenensis showed low frequency of occurrence (<10%) suggesting the decrease in habitation density in this area. The species richness (R'), general diversity (H'), and evenness (E') of amphibians in this area were 0.98, 2.12, and 0.76, respectively, suggesting relatively healthy condition of amphibian community in this area.

A Histological Study of Skin on Some Amphibia Inhabitated Chiri Mt. and Moodeung Mt. (지리산과 무등산에 서식하는 한국산 양서류의 피부에 관한 연구)

  • For the purpose of this study was accumulating histological data of skin some amphibia near Chiri Mt. and Moodeung Mt. Analyzed Anura and Caudata were Rana nigromaculata, Rana rugosa, Rana catesbeiana, Hynobius leechii. The histological prepared skin of frogs were compared, of which were selected from dorsal and belly. Excretory glands were identified granular glands, mucous glands, serous glands, vacuoles and excretory ducts in epidermal and dermal tissue. And developing excretory glands, well developed excretory glands and post developing excretory glands were identified also. These results were significantly as basal data on the comparative epidermal skin histology on some Korean Amphibia. Probably these glands of amphibian skin could be infered which were adaptable structure to ecological suffered condition. Following study of these results were more considerable data for comparative histology, comparative anatomy and comparative physiology and ecology of Amphibia.

Importance and Application of Amphibian Sperm Cryopreservation (양서류 정자 동결보존 기술 개발의 중요성 및 적용)

  • Amphibian populations are declining globally, pushing many species to the brink of extinction. To promote biodiversity and sustainable management, countries are actively researching amphibian reproductive ecology. Sperm cryopreservation is a crucial assisted reproductive technology that aids in preserving the genetic diversity of amphibians. However, because amphibian sperm cells are sensitive to osmotic stress, the optimal cryopreservation method therefore differs from species to species. This literature review offers an overview of the significance of developing cryopreservation techniques for amphibian conservation and highlights the need to create optimal cryopreservation methods and the introduction of long-term monitoring (e.g., fertilization success and offspring reproduction) to advance cryopreservation technology development. This review can be used as basic research data for amphibian conservation methods.

Aquatic contamination by organic pollutants including endocrine disrupters has been suspected to the one of the reason for distinction of amphibia which has obligate aquatic life style during larval period. Amphibians have been widely accepted as animal model for the study of endocrine disruption in aquatic ecosystem at molecular as well as individual levels. There are increasing need for toxicological data in amphibians at multiple endpoints for management of contamination and development of safety guideline for important EDs in aquatic media. Alkylphenols have been widely used in agricultural, industrial, and housekeeping activities, contaminating the aquatic media and evoking endocrine disruption in aquatic animals. In this review, we summarized data concerning the endocrine disruption by alkylphenol organic pollutants on amphibians according to route, concentration, terms, and developmental stage of exposure together with mechanism of endocrine disruption.

  • 1999년 7월 24일부터 7월 25일까지 지리산국립공원 중 동부지역 일대에서 양서류 및 파충류상을 조사한 결과 양서류는 총 2목 5과 8종 파충류는 1목 3과 6종이 관찰 및 탐문으로 조사되었다 이번 조사에서 두꺼비 1종의 고유종이 관찰되었으며 외래종과 환경부 지정 보호야생동물 및 멸종위기종은 관찰되지 않았다.

  • Urbanization is a major driver of global amphibian declines. For the study on the effect of urbanization on amphibians, we compared the growth and the health status of Hyla japonica amphibians collected in the urban areas of Incheon and in the rural area of Gapyeong, Korea. The size and weight of Hyla japonica body in the urban area were smaller than those in the rural area. However, there was no significant difference in their condition factors as a health indicator between the two areas. Our study emphasizes the need for research into the specific mechanism of effects of urbanization on amphibian heath status for the further understanding of the relationship between urbanization and amphibians.

  • Amphibians play a pivotal role in the ecosystem as a mediator between aquatic and terrestrial environment. Currently they are directly exposed to a variety of chemicals in the aquatic environment throughout their life cycle. Azole fungicides have been widely used in medical applications and agricultural activities. The direct exposure of azole fungicides causes an alarming situation for various ecosystem. Recently, teratogenesis and endocrine disruption by azole fungicides have been reported in amphibians. In an effort to provide the current information for amphibian toxicity of azole fungicides and to make the guidelines for safe usage of azole-based materials, the effects of azole fungicides including imidazole, triazole, thiazole, oxazole, and pyrazoleon on early development, differentiation and reproduction of amphibians were reviewed.

Changes in Habitats of Fish and Amphibian Due to Erosion Control Dam Constructed in a Mountain Stream, Gongju, Chungchoengnamdo (충청남도 공주시 소재 산지계류 내 시공된 사방댐에 의한 어류 및 양서류 서식의 변화)

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the factors that affect the habitat of fishes and amphibians in a mountain stream that is part of an experimental forest at Kongju National University, Gongju, Chungcheongnam, Korea, and examine the differences in the presence of fishes and amphibians in the stream before and after construction of an erosion control dam. The results showed that the factors that affect the presence of fishes are pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), flow velocity, and step-pool number, and that the factors that affect the presence of amphibians are monthly rainfall, pH, EC, DO, and crown density. Of these factors, pH, EC, flow velocity, and monthly rainfall were significantly different before and after dam construction; however, the differences among the other three factors from dam construction, except EC, might not have been enough to affect the presence of fishes and amphibians. Our results suggest that the difference in the frequency of fishes and amphibians surveyed before and after dam construction in the upper and lower stream sections were not statistically significant. One exception to this was the presence of amphibians in the lower stream section during and after dam construction, which could have been the result of a large amount of sediment produced by excavation that led to high EC.

Amphibian and Reptilia Fauna in Chuwangsan National Park (주왕산국립공원의 양서.파충류상)

  • Amphibian and Reptilian fauna in Chuwangsan National Park was carried out both Apr. 28, 1994 - Apr. 30, 1994 and Aug. 4, 1994-Aug. 5, 1994. 7 species in 5 Families in Amphibia and 7 species in 3 Families in Reptilia were observed in this survey. Rana dyhowskii in Amphibia and Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus in Reptilia were revealed dominant species in Chuwangsan National Park. The results in this survey would be use to baseline data significantly after the project of construction works in Chuwangsan National Park.
