  • The difference of sex has been an object of interest and argument in medical, psychological, social, and cognitive science fields. This study started from the question of to what extent does the difference of sex have effect on successful interior design. In strive of resolving this, an experimentation of preference in terms of cafe interior design was performed with methods of human sensibility ergonomics. As the result, the difference of sex in preference regarding calf interior design could be observed. Males have main interest in the intensity of luminance, i.e. the brightness, whereas females attach importance to both qualify of light and color. In addition, there is a tendency for males to see cafe as a public place while females recognize cafe as a place for entertainment. Taking the result of this study into consideration can lead to successful gender specific cafe interior design.

  • It is expected that the International Expo which will be held at July 10-13, 2010, in Shanghai, China, will stimulate the growth of hotel industry in the city. The aim of the present study is to examine in advance the preference of a large number of tourists, from domestic areas as well as foreign countries, to come to Shanghai over the restaurants of 5 star-level hotels and to provide the hotel interior design related industry with the resulting data, before the upcoming Expo takes place. To this end, we selected 22 Chinese restaurants of medium-sized 5 star hotels in Shanghai to survey opinions of the customers on their interior design. A questionnaire was prepared and distributed to a total of 30 native Chinese people and 30 foreigners, and their responses were analyzed using the SPSS program. As a result, we were able to evaluate the similar and different preference of the natives versus foreigners on the elements of the restaurant interior design. In 2010, the number of public and business people to visit hotel restaurants in Shanghai will increase, in consequence of the International Expo. Taking this into account, our result suggests that a design style combining 'naturality', 'modernity', and 'elegancy' to each other in harmony be considered for the interior design of the 5 star-level hotels in the city. On one hand, a restaurant could be designed primarily considering the taste which is specific to either native Chinese people or foreigners, based on their different fondness demonstrated in our study. On the other hand, a priority on the design could be given to their similar preference targeting both sides.

The preferred top styles were T-shirts and blouses among those in their 60s and 70s, and T-shirts and shirts among those in their 80s. The preferred sleeve lengths were "below the elbow" and "above the wrist" in all age groups. The preferred sleeve hem type was "tightening" in all age groups. The most preferred bottom styles were "straight-leg pants" and "elastic waistband." This study suggests the design items of indoor wear, including top, bottom, and overgarment for warmth, appropriate for elderly women at home based on the survey results. • Design is inseparably related to aesthetics. In spite of that, it is difficult to explain the precise aesthetic variables that affect the aesthetic value of space or environment. Therefore, this study intended to find the relationships between aesthetic variables by perceptual and affective judgement for space design with focus on complexity and preference variables. The research found low level of 'arousing' as well as high levels of affective dimension variables 'pleasant' and 'relaxing' evoked high preference. High preference also appeared in space design cases with high unity, order, and clarity with low contrast and complexity, which are variables of perceptual dimension. Complexity, one variables of preference by Kaplan, is in an inverse proportion to space preference. Thus, space design with high complexity has high level of 'exciting' and 'arousing' affective responses and relatively low level of 'relaxing' response. Additionally, it was confirmed that the most importantly influential factor on complexity was diverse components rather than visual richness and ornamentation.
