  • An approach to reduce cancellation errors of the temperature preconditioned Navier-Stokes equations is proposed. This approach is also applied to the conventional preconditioning methods. Adiabatic laminar viscous flows around a circular cylinder are calculated at different Mach numbers. It is shown that a redefinition of total enthalpy for reducing magnitude of the enthalpy remarkably alleviates cancellation problems of the temperature preconditioning.

  • The temperature preconditioning is applied to the Navier-Stokes equations. Also, a new concept of diffusion Mach numbers is introduced to modify the reference Mach number for the Navier-Stokes equations. Flows over a circular cylinder were calculated at different Reynolds numbers. It is shown that the temperature preconditioning improves the convergence characteristics of Navier-Stokes equations. Also, it is shown that the modified reference Mach number alleviates the convergence problems at locally low speed regions.

  • This study presents the aerodynamic design and numerical analysis results on a transonic centrifugal compressor which is used for gas turbine systems. Mean-line analysis and quasi-3D analysis are used for the aerodynamic design, and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis is applied to flow analysis of the compressor. The aerodynamic parameters for a transonic compressor, such as pressure coefficient, swirl parameter, blade loading, are discussed, and flow characteristics in the impeller and diffuser are discussed.

  • The three-dimensional Stokes flow within a staggered screw channel is obtained by using a finite volume method. The geometry is intended to mimic the single screw extruder having staggered arrangement of flights. The flow solution is then subjected to the analysis of the stirring performance. In the analysis of the stirring performance, the stretching-mapping method developed by the author is employed for calculating the materials' stretching exponents, which are to be used in quantification of the mixing effect. The numerical results Indicate that the staggered geometry gives indeed far much better stirring-performance than the standard (nonstaggered) flight geometry. It was also shown that care must be given to the selection of the basis planes for evaluating the local stretching rate, and it turns out that the best method (H-method) has its basis plane just on the half way between the past and future evolution of fluid particles subjected to the defromation. In evaluating the stretching exponent, the expansion ratio must be considered which is one of the characteristic differences of the actual three-dimensional flows from the two-dimensionmal counterparts. The larger axial pressure-difference causes in general the smaller stirring performance while the flow rate is increased. The smaller channel length also increases the stirring performance.

  • A theoretical analysis is conducted on the Stokes flow in a narrow channel. A vertical fin is mounted on the bottom plate and the flow is induced by uniformly sliding top plate. The governing harmonic equation was solved in the transformed ζ-plane, which is obtained by applying conformal mappings to the physical plane. By using well-known transformation technique, closed-form expressions for velocity and skin frictional stress on the top and bottom plates were obtained.

  • In this study a pure vector potential method (PVPM) for a three dimensional, unsteady, incompressible flow is proposed. A simplified version for a two dimensional problem is described in detail, and a method to prescribe appropriate boundary conditions is also presented. The resulting numerical algorithm is applied to the cavity flow driven by an impulsively started wall and also to the Stokes' first problem. Some important unsteady/steady features are captured for these two flows, and quantitative agreements of flow variables with available reference database are good.

  • A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code has been developed for analysis of viscous flows through turbomachinery blade rows or other internal passages. The Navier-Stokes equations are written in a cartesian coordinate system, then mapped to a general body-fitted coordinate system. Streamwise viscous terms are neglected and turbulent effects are modeled using the baldwin-Lomax model. Equations are discretized using finite difference method on the stacked C-type grids and solved using LU-ADI decomposition scheme. calculations are made for a two-dimensional cascade in a transonic wind-tunnel to see the infuence of the endwalls. The flow pattern of the three-dimensional flow near the endwall is found to be different from that of the two-dimensional flow due to the existence of the endwalls.

  • Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. The present work has focused on the simulation of cavitating flow past cylinders with strong side flows. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on the homogeneous mixture model. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved liquid and vapor phase, separately. An implicit dual time and preconditioning method are employed for computational analysis. For the code validation, the results from the present solver have been compared with experiments and other numerical results. A fairly good agreement with the experimental data and other numerical results have been obtained. After the code validation, the strong side flow was applied to include the wake flow effects of the submarine or ocean tide.

  • In general, flow analysis programs have been built in not JAVA language but such as Fortran, C or C++ because of a merit in performance of computation. However, most developer of those languages are not free for use. User should purchase the development tools of programs, and install it on their own computer. Fortunately, JAVA is a free software, and can be used to develop WEB-based programs. It is well known that the JAVA language is time consuming for calculating. However, the performance of computer power has been increased continuously, so it is sure that the former states can be overcome. In the present study, a flow analysis program, which is interactive with Graphics, using the Web-based programing language, JAVA, has been developed for solving the two-dimensional flow motion.

  • Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation(LES) simulation of an axial flow fan are calculated upon same conditions and computational grids in order to study aeroacoustic noise of an axial flow fan numerically. Results of computed performance and predicted noise are compared with those of measurement. Both performances show accurate results with a significant difference of less than 5%. However, noise of LES result is more close to measured noise qualitatively than URANS. Levels of tonal noises of both LES and URANS are quite similar with those of measured at BPF(Blade Passing Frequency) in sound spectrum. However, as leading edge separation and tip vortex shedding phenomena of LES are showed more clearly than those of URANS, sound level of broadband noise of LES corresponds better than that of URANS, especially.
