  • Tracheostomy is one of the oldest surgical procedures in medical history. The indications for a tracheostomy include the relief of an upper airway obstruction, long-term mechanical ventilation, and decreased airway resistance to help wean the patient from mechanical ventilator support. Unfortunately, tracheostomy is also associated with a number of problems including, bleeding, infection, pneumothorax, and tracheal stenosis. A pneumothorax is an uncommon complication of a tracheostomy, and can result from direct injury to the pleura or positive pressure ventilation through a dislocation of the tracheostomy tube. We report an uncommon case of a tracheostomy-induced bilateral tension pneumothorax with a review of the literature.

  • Changes in volatile organic compounds were investigated during storage after electron beam irradiation. Grapes were irradiated at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 kGy and stored for 1 month at $4^{\circ}C$. Butanol, hexanal, [E]-2-hexenal, hexanol, and 3-methyl-butanol were the major volatile organic compounds of grapes. The types of volatiles in irradiated grapes were similar to those of non-irradiated samples but concentration differed among treatments. Some volatile compounds decreased during storage, whereas others, especially the esters, increased. Concentration of most volatile compounds were higher in pre-stored grapes than in post-stored fruit (thus, during the 30 days after irradiation by e-beam). Consequently, concentration of volatile organic compounds either increased or decreased after e-beam irradiation but these changes did not correlate with irradiation dose.

  • The theoretical scope of the public sphere has been dramatically expanded as a result of new academic inquiries into the nature of the political and the public in contemporary societies. While appreciating the value of the concept of the public sphere for understanding democratic roles of the media, scholars began to raise questions on Habermasians' exclusive focus on news and public affairs programs, arguing that various entertainment programs also can invoke political deliberation. Terms like affective public sphere, emotional public sphere, aesthetic public sphere, expressive public sphere were used to capture this new conception. To comprehend the theoretical and practical implications of the conceptual expansion of the public sphere for media studies, this study attempted to provide a typology of media-public sphere relationships. By using public-private and rational-emotional axes as two criteria for classification, we created four prototypes of the public sphere (i.e., political public sphere, populism, difference pluralism, and intimacy/privacy) and discussed the characteristics of each type. After setting out media communication as a form of meta-public sphere that mediates and coordinates the four different types of the public sphere, we presented public service broadcasting as an exemplar meta-public sphere in the contemporary society of multiple social antagonisms and differences.

  • This paper argues that media criticism should be reestablished as an academic movement leading to the maintenance and maturity of democracy. Korean democracy has been withdrawn both procedurally and practically. However, the Korean media do not properly monitor democratic retreat. The purpose of journalism is to provide people with the information they need to be free and self-governed, and the public sphere is a condition of deliberative democracy. This paper proposed three practical strategies for media criticism. First, it is the overcoming of the conservative-progressive frame. It is important to look at what kind of media is responsible for democratic retreat. Second, media criticism should be expanded on workers and capitalists. Korea's labor relations are as distorted as the public sphere. Korean journalism did not set agenda for labor relations. Most reports were 'capitalist bias'. Finally, Media criticism should be the empowerment of the people who are the sovereigns of the media.

  • Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum has caused high damage in cucumber under greenhouse condition. This disease was suppressed $30\~55\%$ by application of organic matters compared with natural cropping soils. The suppression effect was the highest in the mushroom humic compost and fowl excretion matter among the various organic matters, varying with kinds of organic matters and degrees of humic resolvability. There was a slight difference in severity of fusarium wilt between sterilized organic matters and soils. The disease occurrence was delayed more in the nonsterilized organic matters and soils than in the sterilized ones. At 30 days after inoculation of F. oxysporum, numbers of Actinomycetes, fungi and bacteria were considerably increased, whereas F. oxysporum was decreased in the organic matter amended-soils compared with natural control soils.

  • The patient is a 62-year-old man with known diabetes mellitus who presented with a two-weeks-history of dyspnea, cough, and fever. He was diagnosed with a lung abscess in the right upper lobe and was treated with intravenous antibiotics. The patient's clinical and radiological findings improved within seven days after medical treatment. However, newly developed ground-glass opacity and infiltrations were observed in the right lower lung. Fourteen days after admission, the patient's symptoms and imaging finding became aggravated despite trestment with susceptible antibiotics for lung abscess. Trans-bronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) was performed in the lateral basal segment of the right lower lobe of the lung. A histologic photomicrograph showed organizing pneumonia, also called bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia(BOOP), that became more definite as the terminal bronchioles and alveoli became occluded with masses of inflammatory cells and fibrotic tissue. The clinical symptoms and radiograph findings resolved quickly with prednisone treatment. We report a case of secondary organizing pneumonia diagnosed after TBLB following lung abscess treatment and provide a review of the literature.

  • Curriculum requires careful deliberations, as it reflects social needs as well as the needs of the relevant curriculum. Developing a standard for informatics curriculum will be significant in that it will provide a knowledge frame for constant revision of curriculum. The aim of this study, based on Tyler's Model of Curriculum Development, is to find implications regarding the standard development of knowledge system for informatics curriculum in Korea, through the comparison of CSTA 2003 and 2011 curriculum. In order to achieve this, analyses of various curriculum theories and overseas curriculum have been made, and finally a comparison of the CSTA curriculum standards for 2003 and 2011. As a result, in order to develop the curriculum standard, the aims of the curriculum and standard need to be clarified. Furthermore, implications have been made for the suggestions on review and evaluation of overseas curriculum.

  • This paper examines the gap between the theoretical premises of, and the ways that public deliberative approaches to decision-making function in application to a specific instance of technological risk policy. An interrogation of a UK nationwide public deliberation case-the CoRWM program (Committee on Radioactive Waste Management)-a real-world instance of public deliberation illuminates some significant contrasts in the ways that public deliberation takes place to those characterized in theory. A public-engaged deliberation on radioactive waste management in reality does not emerge as rational reasoning for the common good. Instead, it was rather a complex mix of various forms of material, social and political interactions, and relationships.

  • Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is a concept emerging rapidly as a theoretical and methodological framework to shape science for better society, instead of merely for economic growth. While the responsibility of science usually means ethics of researchers in the process of research, RRI extends the concept of the responsibility by claiming that researchers should be responsible for the purpose and outcome of research as well. In addition, RRI proposes four interconnected concepts of anticipation, reflectivity, deliberativeness/inclusiveness, and responsibility as a methodological framework to achieve these tasks. However, RRI is not merely a theoretical concept but has been already practiced at many levels in real world. We discuss how RRI has been practiced and played important roles in reflecting on research and innovation policies in the past and guiding new policies by examining two research projects, STIR and SPICE, and three national R&D programs, EPSRC's embracement of RRI in the Britain, MVI in the Netherlands, and R&D for social problem-solving in Korea.
