The aim of this study was to develop and validate a mathematics teaching efficacy scale for South Korean Elementary Teachers. The sample was consisted of 300 elementary teachers in South Korea. A total of 13 items were developed and examined for internal consistence. The results of this study showed that the proposed scale was appropriate to represent mathematics teaching efficacy of elementary teachers.
The aim of this study is exploring the confidence in Mathematics. First, we investigated the relationships among self-concept, self-efficacy, and confidence. In addition we analyzed confidence with Mathematics of Korean students based on the TIMSS 2003, 2007, 2011 data. This study was to clarify the relationship between the three concepts by using preceding studies and TIMSS/PISA questionnaire. Self concept and self-efficacy as compared with confidence is a little more subject oriented belif about personal learning ability. Compared to elementary school students, secondary school students' confidence is lower. And, this study also found that, there are six factors that effect the Korean students' confidence with mathematics. In particular, the individual study process of evaluation is more effective than classes evaluated.
PISA 2012 showed that while Korean students achieved high-level math achievement in mathematics their levels are relatively lower in math self-efficacy. Students from Singapore, on the other hand, achieved high scores both in math achievement and in math self-efficacy. The results of the two countries differed although both countries has been sharing the same East Asian cultural sphere. This study analyzed the input and the process variables on the student- and school-level concerning math self-efficacy. The results were as follows. In Korea, math interest, instrumental motivation, elaboration strategies, applied and pure math tasks were the student-level variables that affected math self-efficacy. In Singapore, math interest, control strategies, elaboration strategies, applied and pure math tasks were the student-level variables that affected mathematics self-efficacy. Math club, teachers' low expectations were the school-level variables that affected math self-efficacy. For a higher-level of math self-efficacy in Korea, it is important to encourage students not only to use control strategies, but to participate in math clubs. It is equally important for teachers to have higher expectations towards students.
This study aims to develop strategies for improving the affective characteristics of Korean students based on results from international achievement tests. In pursuing the goal, different research methods are employed including a) analysis of the theories and literature regarding the affective domains included in PISA and TIMSS studies; b) analysis of the current situation and needs of Korean students with respect to the affective factors based on PISA and TIMSS results; c) case studies of best practices in relation to students' affective domains in Korea and abroad; and d) development of strategies for improving and supporting Korean students' affective characteristics. In this paper, first of all, relevant theories on affective characteristics in literature are introduced. In other words, the concepts of three affective domains in question - interest, self-efficacy, and value - are reviewed, and their definitions for the present study are made. Also, teaching strategies and support plans for improving students' affective factors are extracted from previous studies. Furthermore, this paper reviews recent trends in research on how the affective domains are related to mathematics education and how one can teach them effectively. The teaching guidelines for each affective domain are developed according to the instruction principles extracted through literature review in general for all subjects. Based on the results of the findings mentioned above, this paper establishes and suggests the guidelines on how to teach mathematics reflecting the affective characteristic.
On inquiry of international comparison assessment, the Korean students achieve high scores in mathematics while they achieve relatively low scores in responses of the affective questionnaire. It can be an important point in mathematics education of Korea, but there are few studies which explore the specific reasons. So in this study, we analysed the results of PISA 2003(in math domain) based on multiple regression analysis and correlation analysis to investigate the reasons and features of those phenomena. We compared the results of Korean students with students of other countries. As a result, there were 7 factors which effect on Korean students' affective domain in mathematics learning and they were statistically significant. According to this study, it needs to improve students' positive attitudes to their school, mathematical interest, and positive self-concept. And it needs to develop an actual instrument to explore the affective domain which effect on mathematics learning.

Especially, this paper deals with the analysis of the results from in-depth interviews and class observations, so as to identify the current situation and best practice cases of students' affective characteristics education in Korea. The results are classified into a) curriculum, which is in turn divided into national curriculum and reconstruction of curriculum school and classroom; and b) teaching, learning and evaluation, which is in turn divided into learner characteristics, motivation, teaching strategies, class grouping, activities and interaction, question and feedback, evaluation methods, and evaluation tools. Support plans in terms of school and social environments are also suggested based on the results.

Especially, this paper describes meta-analyses of the results from the previous PISA and TIMSS studies. Afterwards, it reports statistical analyses results on the relationship between students' affective achievements and educational context variables. Data from TIMSS 2011, TIMSS 2007, PISA 2006, and PISA 2003 are used for the analyses, and contextual variables are selected through rigorous statistical analyses including frequency and correlation, and expert consultation. The effects of educational contextual variables on students' affective achievement in mathematics and science are analyzed through Hierarchical Linear Model.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal impact of the engagement of private tutoring on student achievement and the influence of the engagement of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring by applying hierarchical linear growth modeling technique on the KELS (Korean Education Longitudinal Study) data. For the analysis, we used KELS data including the score of Mathematics achievement from 2005 to 2007 in order to get useful variables like whether or not to engage private tutoring, weekly time and monthly cost of private tutoring, the experience of gifted education, gender, prior achievement of 6th grade, parents' monthly income, internal motivation and self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 4,435 7th graders from Korean middle schools who were included in the KELS and have the data available to a significant dataset having no missing values include. The result suggest that the private tutoring experience predicted students' high Mathematics achievement and the interaction between grade and private tutoring time and cost has negative impact on the mathematics achievement. In contrast, it was found that the experience of gifted education has negative impact on the growth of mathematics achievement, but positive impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement. In other words, the experience of gifted education shows affirmative impact on the effect of private tutoring cost on the mathematics achievement indirectly. On the basis of this results, we discussed deeply the effect of private tutoring on the Mathematics achievement and the influence and its meaning of the experience of gifted education on the effect of private tutoring.
This study was conducted to develop and apply an out-of-school STEAM program model based on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) for underprivileged students in the lower grades. To this end, a STEAM program based on SEL was developed, with the following characteristics. First, by integrating traditional STEAM learning elements and SEL elements, a structured program was designed with consistent stages, including mindfulness meditation→present an authentic situation→creative design→emotional experiences→reflection. Second, the program was structured so that elementary school students could develop mathematical thinking and scientific inquiry skills in problem-solving situations in daily life. Third, the detailed themes for each STEAM program involved storytelling-based problem situations, as well as activities centered on play and sympathy to reflect the educational needs of underprivileged students. From these characteristics, a total of five programs were developed and applied to 16 teachers and 354 lower-grade elementary school students in 16 community children centers nationwide. The results were as follows. First, while students' satisfaction with the STEAM program was 4.16, there were no significant differences in STEAM satisfaction according to gender. Second, while all students' interest and self-efficacy, which was one of sub factors of STEAM attitude, were significantly improved, no significant difference was seen in STEAM attitudes according to gender. Third, although students' SEL competencies were not significantly improved, relationship skills, which were among the sub factors of SEL competencies, were significantly improved, and there were no significant differences in SEL competencies according to gender. From these results, a discussion on the effect of the out-of-school STEAM program for underprivileged students and directions for follow-up studies was suggested.
