Mathematical symbols concisely represent mathematical contents related to terms by describing their mathematical meanings implicitly. All symbols in elementary school mathematics textbooks are stated as to be read so that elementary school students could understand their mathematical meanings. The same is somewhat true as in middle school mathematics textbooks, however it is often the case that some symbols are difficult to be read and understood because their statements are unclear or different. In this study, we analyze problems and suggest implications on teaching and learning mathematics based on the statements and understanding of reading symbols in middle school mathematics textbooks.
This article is a review report on the middle school mathematics textbooks, based on "2015 Revision of National Curriculum". Considering future textbooks, this report is to keep a record of the review. In this report, I mainly discuss the mathematical aspects (but not educational or pedagogical aspects) of the textbooks. I sincerely hope that the content of this article is to be discussed and examined further by the society of mathematics education and the society of mathematics.
This study is an analytical study on textbooks of , which was first presented in the 2015 revised high school mathematics curriculum. The textbook has a very high educational significance in that it is the first textbook developed for students majoring in economics. Analyzing whether these textbooks faithfully follow the spirit of the curriculum is an essential study for nurturing creative and convergent human beings and for personal self-realization. Therefore, in this study, a consistency analysis was conducted to determine whether the textbook fits the textbook development direction suggested by the curriculum developer and is appropriate for the state-approved mathematics curriculum. As a result of analysis, the contents of the textbook did not partially meet these criteria and lacked consistency. In conclusion, it is necessary to prepare more thorough standards for the examination and recognition of high school elective courses in the future.
In this study, the vocabularies in elementary mathematics textbooks for grade 1-2 were analyzed according to 9-degree of semantic system. Also, the types of vocabulary were analyzed using general academic words, mathematics specific concept words, and mathematics general concept words. As a result, percentages of 1-degree and 2-degree vocabulary was the most in both grade 1 and 2 mathematics textbooks. It also shows that some of general academic words were 3-degree vocabulary and some of mathematics specific concept words were either unregistered or 1-degree vocabulary. In particular, general academic words, which are 3-degree vocabulary, may be unfamiliar to 1st and 2nd grade students. Therefore, students should be given the opportunity to guess and understand the contextual meaning of general academic words from the given contexts in textbooks. The frequency of use of mathematics general concept words in grade 2 textbook increased significantly compared to grade 1 textbook. Since mathematics general concept words are academic and technical vocabulary they should be taught explicitly. Based on the results of this study, implications for vocabulary instruction in mathematics textbooks were discussed.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences between Korean mathematics textbooks and CPMP textbooks in the view of conceptual network, structure of mathematical contents, instructional design, and teaching and learning environment to explore the implications for mathematics education in Korea. According to the results, Korean textbooks emphasized the mathematical structures and conceptual network, on the other hand, CPMP textbooks focused on making connections between mathematical concepts and corresponding real life situations as well as mathematical structures. And generalizing mathematical concepts at the symbolic level was very important objective in Korean textbooks, but in the CPMP textbooks, investigating mathematical ideas and solving problems in diverse contexts including real- life situations were considered very important. Teachers using Korean textbooks preferred an explanatory teaching method with the use of concrete manipulatives and student worksheet, however, teachers using CPMP textbooks emphasized collaborative group activities to communicate mathematical ideas and encouraged students to use graphing calculators when they explore mathematical concepts and solve problems.
This study aimed to compare and analyze the number and characteristics of modeling problems in chapters related to function contents in International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) mathematics textbooks and Korean high school mathematics textbooks. This study implies how the textbooks contributed to the improvement of students' modeling competency. In this study, three textbooks from IBDP and all nine textbooks from the Korean 2015 revised curriculum were selected. All the problems in textbooks were classified into real-world problems and non-real-world problems. Problems classified as real-world problems were once again divided into word problems and modeling problems according to the need to set up mathematical models. Modeling problems were further categorized into standard applications and good modeling problems depending on whether all the necessary information was included in the problem-solving process. Among the 12 textbooks, the textbook with the most modeling problems was the IBDP textbook, 'Math: Applications and Interpretation', which accounted for 50.41% of modeling problems to the total number of problems. This textbook provided learners with significantly higher modeling opportunities than other IBDP and Korean textbooks, which had 2% and 9% modeling problem ratios. In all 12 textbooks, all problems classified as modeling problems appeared as standard applications, and there were no proper modeling problems. Among the six sub-competencies of mathematical modeling, 'mathematical analysis' and 'interpretation and evaluation of results' sub-competencies appeared the most with very similar number of modeling problems, followed by the 'mathematization'. It is expected that the results of this study will help compare the number and ratio of modeling problems in each textbook and provide a better understanding of which modeling sub-competencies appear to what extent in the modeling problems.
This paper examined vocabulary used in elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks for the grade band of 5~6. This study focused on the adequacy of vocabulary using 9-degree of semantic difficulty. The results of this study showed that most vocabulary in the textbooks and workbooks was adequate for the target grades. In some cases, however, vocabulary that was supposed to be difficult for the fifth and sixth graders was employed in a way that the meaning of such vocabulary was difficult for students to infer in the given context. The most frequent vocabularies in the main activities of the mathematics textbooks included 'method', 'investigate', 'number', 'communicate', and 'represent'. Based on these results, this study provides 5~6 grade textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with vocabulary in instructional materials.
Although there are various form of statistical graphs in the real world, the statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks are very formalized by the pedagogical constraints. In this study, I examine the frames of statistical graphs and their educational importance, and analyze the frames in Korean, Australian, and MiC textbooks. As a result, the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks (1) draws students' attention to the components of the graphs, (2) plays a supplementary role in students' drawing graphs by hands, and (3) helps to apply school mathematics to statistical problem solving in real life. The frames of statistical graphs in Korean textbooks is the form of tables focusing on (1) and (2), but these of MiC textbooks has various forms focusing on (3). On the other hand, Austalian textbooks introduced the table-form frames of statistical graphs at the lower graders, but gradually changed to the axis-form frames as the grade level increased. Based on this, a recommendation was drawn on how to deal with the frames of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics textbooks.
This study aimed to investigate elementary school teachers' interest in mathematics textbooks following the new change in the publication system for elementary mathematics textbooks. To achieve this, an online survey platform was used to conduct a survey of elementary school teachers in teaching grade 3-4 across the country, and the responses of 199 participants were analyzed to determine their interest in mathematics textbooks. The research results showed that elementary school teachers had high levels of interest in mathematics textbooks, particularly in informational and personal interest. Moreover, the stages at which teachers showed the highest level of interest were reinforcement interest and operational interest. Analysis of the differences in interest in mathematics textbooks based on personal variables showed significant differences depending on the teacher's experience in mathematics education training, satisfaction with mathematics textbooks, and whether they majored in mathematics education. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that elementary school teachers have a high level of informational interest in the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and materials related to authorized and approved mathematics textbooks, and their high level of personal interest in mathematics textbooks can have a positive effect in line with the goal of the new textbook system. Additionally, since many teachers showed a high level of interest in reinforcement interest, it is necessary to devise various ways to support teachers' creative use and reconstruction of mathematics textbooks.
This study aims to investigate how secondary mathematics teachers understand and intend to use textbooks for their mathematics instruction. For this purpose, we developed a set of survey items in order to unpack what the teachers understand the mathematical tasks suggested in the textbooks in terms of the levels of cognitive demand and how they intended to use the tasks in the textbooks for their teaching. Twenty-five teachers participated in the survey. The data from the survey were analyzed. The findings from the data analysis suggested as follows: a) the teachers seemed to closely follow textbooks without attempting to modify the tasks, even when the teachers consider it is necessary to modify textbook tasks to high-level tasks, b) the teachers seemed to be unstable in regards that they admitted themselves very competent for modifying tasks for developing students' mathematical thinking but, at the same time, they were uncomfortable with transforming tasks into cognitively demanding tasks that promote students' mathematical understanding, and c) the teachers appeared to consider textbooks as significant criteria in conducting tests including midterm and final exam. In conclusion, the teachers seemed to intend to follow closely the contents and sequence of mathematics textbooks in their mathematics classrooms.
