  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of calculators as a cognitive tool rather than calculating tool in learning elementary school mathematics. The calculator activities on multiplying two numbers ending with 0s or two decimal fractions and mixed four operations were developed, and exploratory lessons with the activities were implemented to three 3rd graders and two 5th graders. The results were shown that calculators provided an alternative effective learning environment: students were able to use heuristic thinking, reason inductively and successfully investigate principles of mathematics through the pattern recognition. And finally, we discussed the heuristic method through utilizing calculators.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine not only students' cognition in the mathematical error-finding activity of the concept of irrational numbers, but also the students' learning stance regarding the use of errors and a teacher's questioning strategies that lead to changes in the level of mathematical discourse. To this end, error-finding individual activities, group activities, and additional interviews were conducted with 133 middle school students, and students' cognition and the teacher's questioning strategies for changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse were analyzed. As a result of the study, students' cognition focuses on the symbolic representation of irrational numbers and the representation of decimal numbers, and they recognize the existence of irrational numbers on a number line, but tend to have difficulty expressing a number line using figures. In addition, the importance of the teacher's leading and exploring questioning strategy was observed to promote changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse. This study is valuable in that it specified the method of using errors in mathematics teaching and learning and elaborated the teacher's questioning strategies in finding mathematical errors.

  • This study purposes to examine the learning achievements, attitude and reactions of elementary school students in fifth grade in mathematics after inducing to use of learning-notebook on mathematics. To achieve the purpose, this study focuses on the following matters. First, we develop the ways to write thoughts and activities in solving problems on learning-notebook for elementary school student in fifth grade. Second, we analyze the effects of the students' learning achievements after applying the ways to them in every mathematics learning activities at home and in school, etc. Third, this study examine the attitudes and reactions of the students toward mathematics after observing the learning activities and interviewing them. The results are summarized as follows. First, using learning-notebook helps to improve the performance of students. The average point of the final examination went up to 90.67 while the average of the first level test was 70.75. And almost each student's result have improved. Second, the interviews with the students show that they feel sense of accomplishment, their mathematical attitude has changed to be positive, and they've actively participated in class by using the learning-notebook. The students felt confidence and achievement and they were more interested in studying mathematics when they use the learning-notebook. Further, the students used the notes in doing their homework and at home studying. Finally, the learning-notebook had a good influence on the relationships between students and teachers. Moreover, learning-notebook serves as a medium that connects teacher and student's work.

  • A goal of this study is figuring out how fraction learning centered on various representation activities influences the fraction comprehension and mathematical attitudes. The study focused on 33 4th-grade students of B elementary school in Seoul. In the study, 15 fraction learning classes comprising enactive, iconic, and symbolic representations took place over 6 weeks. After the classes, the ratio of the students who achieved relational understanding increased and the students averagely recorded 90 pt or more on the fraction comprehension test I, II and III. Two-dependent samples t-test was conducted to analyze a significant difference in mathematical attitudes between pre-test and post-test. On the test result, there was the meaningful difference with 0.01 level of significance. To conclude, the fraction learning centered on various representation activities improves students' relational understanding and fraction understanding. In addition, the fraction learning centered on various representation activities gives positive influences on mathematical attitudes since it increases learning orientation, self-control, interests, value cognition, and self-confidence of the students and decreases fears of the students.

  • The Purpose of this study is to explore he mathematical discovery and justification of six 10th grade students through mathematical modeling activities in spreadsheet environments. The students investigated problem situations with a spreadsheet, which seem to be difficult to solve in paper and pencil environment. In spreadsheet environments, it is easy for students to form a data table and graph by inputting and copying spreadsheet formulas, and to make change specific variable by making a scroll bar. In this study those functions of spreadsheet play an important role in discovery and justification of mathematical rules which underlie in the problem situations. In modeling activities, the students could solve the problem situations and find the mathematical rules by using those functions of spreadsheets. They used two types of trial and error strategies to find the rules. The first type was to insert rows between two adjacent rows and the second was to make scroll bars connecting specific variable and change the variable by moving he scroll bars. The spreadsheet environments also help students to justify their findings deductively and convince them that their findings are true by checking various cases of the Problem situations.

  • It is generally accepted that fostering creative thinking is a core in mathematics education and accumulating research products on that topic is really needed. In this study, I hoped to investigate and verify that in mathematics education it was possible to cultivate creative thinking through various and divergent activities, For this purpose, I delat with some illustrations, in which students learned mathematics through the operational activities using teaching tools, problem solving and problem posing activities, and finally they seemed to foster creative mathematical thinking. In conclusion of this paper, I have suggested that in math education those activities should be used to cultivate students' creative thinking in kindergarten or early elementary school. Also I asserted that it is urgently need to store up research products about various materials and methods for those mathematics teaching and learning.

  • This study aimed to derive pedagogical implications by comparing and analyzing how the concept of pi is taught in 10 different elementary mathematics textbooks, which are scheduled to be applied from 2023. We developed a textbook analysis framework by previous studies on the concept of pi and the teaching of pi, and analyzed in terms of three instructional elements (i.e. inferring conceptsof pi, understanding properties of pi, and applying relationships). We derived the need to emphasize various contexts for estimation of pi, presentation of problem situations that provide motivation to actually measure diameters and circumferences, providing an opportunity to explore the properties of measurement, and an experience the flexibility of selecting an approximate value of pi. Based on the above conclusions and pedagogical implications through the research results., we suggested ways to teach the concept of pi in elementary mathematics and improvement points for developing textbooks focusing on the context of introduction of pi and the use of technological tools.

  • The goal of this research was to study the effects of the Mathematical Problem Generating Program on problem solving ability and learning attitude. The experiment was carried out between two classes. One class was applied with the experimental program (treatment group), and the other continued with normal teaching and learning methods (comparative group). In this study, two 5th grade elementary classes participated in Seoul city. In this study, the students were tested their problem solving abilities by the IPSP test and learning attitude by the Korean Education Development Institute (KEDI) before and after use of the program. The collected results were t-tested to find any meaningful changes. The results showed the followings. First, use of the mathematical generating program showed meaningful progressive results in problem solving ability. Second, the students that used the program showed positive results in learning attitude. In conclusion, learning mathematics using the problem generating method helps students deeper understand and solve complex problems. In addition, problem solving abilities can be improved and the attitude towards mathematics can be changed while students are using an active and positive approach in problem solving processes.

  • In this study, we have accomplished content area reading activities for pre-service teachers since 2003. These activities were guided each year to students of the college of education. We proceeded our content area reading activities by four courses. Four courses consisted of reading the book, discussion of reading, announcement of the results, reminding announcement. After content area reading activities, the pre-service teachers have learned naturally the knowledge and ideas that will help in teaching mathematics. And they have shared and expand their knowledge and ideas with colleagues. Moreover the pre-service teachers came to realize that content area reading is very important in pre-service mathematics teacher education. In the study, it was suggested that there is a need to provide opportunities to experience the content area reading for pre-service teachers in mathematics teacher education.
